Thanks again for the insightful comments. No muffin top, no sense of relief when I take them off, just an unfamiliar feeling.

I wore my thick socks and thick denim skinnies and am happy to report that the boots are here to stay.

My own black knee high boots are a bit tight lately because I gained some weight. They never were super snug and they are still fine with tights, but jeans are borderline too tight, depending on the day. I can't comfortably wear them with jeans and leggings layered under. Luckily it wasn't that cold so far and I'm spending a lot of time indoors too. Mine are leather lined with leather, so they do give, but they are still uncomfortable for a lot of walking when I wear jeans. I don't have muffin top or marks btw. It's just the difference of knowing you're wearing boots all day or forgetting about them because they're comfortable. So I would caution you to keep too tight boots. They should be comfortable to wear with jeans if that's the main thing you want them for. I'm definitely going to get myself new ankle booties next fall, to have an alternative that will work in any case.

One other thing to consider is that if they're too tight around the calf, they will often slide down, resulting in sagging and bunching around the ankle.

It could be just a matter of getting used to the way they feel. I agree though, if they leave marks and you feel relieved when you take them off then they should go back. That would be a bummer, they sound pretty close to perfect.

I had a pair of knee high leather boots that everyone said would stretch out a bit. They didn't. The lining didn't stretch. The leather might stretch but will the lining?
I eventually took mine to a cobbler who was highly recommended and he fixed them. It was only 1/2 inch at the top (if that) but what a difference.

My legs and feet swell a bit through the day. Probably more so in the summer heat. But I can't wear a neoprene ankle brace I have all day at any time of year, it gets unbearable. Not sure about one's calves but it seems possible they might swell a bit over a full day of walking. Would you be wearing them all day long or just to and from the office or such?

Leather boots will almost invariably "relax" or loosen in the shaft over time if they are snug. This won't happen if boots are not snug, as there is no stress on the leather. My bet would be that if they are not uncomfortable or leaving marks right now, they will end up being fine in the long run - more comfortable each time you wear them until they are just right.

I had a similar problem once with a pair of boots and keeping them was a mistake. The leather didn't stretch all that much and wearing those shoes quickly became uncomfortable, so I had to give them away.

You have to take into account that when you stand in your boots your calf muscles aren't flexed to the maximum, but they will be during walking. Which means the circumference of your calfs will be bigger then.

A good way to determine whether the boots are wide enough is to measure your calf circumference when your calf muscles are flexed. Which means: stand straight, then slowly bend your knees and bring them forward until they are in a vertical line with your toes. Keep your legs in this position and measure the calf circumference at its widest point with a measuring tape.
Also measure the circumference of the boots and compare both results.
The boot circumference needs to be a bit bigger. If it's not, you're going to have problems - especially when sitting for longer periods of time or while walking up/down the stairs.

I would worry more about the point where the elastic panel is attached to the leather. If your elastic is stretched to its limit, the stitching is probably under strain and would pop eventually.

Could you consult with a shoe repair professional before making your final decision?

As a cautionary tale, I had a pair that were able to get zipped up, but tight, so I had them stretched at the cobbler, but really, they still ended up uncomfortable. As such, I agree with the others to try to stretch and would recommend wearing them around the houseo to see how they feel. Mine were always fine at first, but got too constricting with wear and actually really starting hurting my calves. Give them time, a couple hours, of sitting, walking etc, and they may be fine, but remember, it's not a bargain if they prove unwearable.

Do they hurt your calves after wearing for several hours? Do they inhibit your ability to move at all? Do you get "muffin top" above the boot shaft? If the answer to all of these is no, then I think you are good to keep. They will probably loosen slightly over time but in my experience it's never a huge difference.

I've had a pair of snug boots once, but the kind that was a snug calf fit all the way up. They weren't comfortable for all day, and I didn't wear them as much as I would have wanted to. Do they leave marks? Do you feel relief when you take them off? Do you have to think of them when they're on? If yes to any of those, I would vote return.

O, I am inclined to say keep them and let them "relax" around your jeans after a few wearings. Leather and elastic both stretch at least a little over time. Spritzing the interior of the leather with alcohol before you put the boots on (over jeans AND heavy socks to emphasize the width of your calf) with help with stretch as well.

Also, I know that other people's fit issues always seem like the better ones to have, but I envy the idea of a snug calf fit!

Hi Suz,

Thanks for replying. I don't have a photo with them on and it's too late (bad light) to try and snap them.

But to answer -- they don't feel like cutting the circulation, just nice and snug, more than I'm used to.

And I don't think they can be stretched except as much shaping as the leather itself allows.

Do they hurt or feel like they are cutting circulation?

Can you show us a pic of them on?

Can you stretch them a bit with a boot tree, perhaps?

Re the elastics -- this material will probably wear out a little faster than the rest of the boot. But it varies. Some can be high quality and Clarks is a good brand.

On the subject of Almost Perfect Purchase...

I have bought my almost dream boots. Beautiful black leather, elegant toe shape, interesting zipper detail AND tall enough for me.

'Almost' because they fit very snuggly around my calves and I am not sure if that's deal breaker.

The boots have elasticated inset at the back (which I suppose is there precisely for border cases like mine, it allows for tight fit), except that in my case this basically stretches as much as it possibly can to allow me to zip them up when I tuck the jeans in. I can feel the boots a lot tighter than any other pair I have. Btw, I need primarily boots for jeans.

The boots do come in wider fit, but not through the seller I bought them from and where they had somehow been attractively priced. All other sites sell them for much higher price than I paid. Returning the pair I now have, and then reordering from elsewhere would throw me outside my budget. So, it's either keeping them, or returning and then waiting for something else.

Funnily, I've only ever had leather boots without the elasticated insets, so I have no idea how this material will behave over time.

I'd greatly appreciate some insight into how to make the final decision.

p.s.
The boots are here.
