I sent it back with a light heart. Right decision. Exchanged it for plain knit tops which will work really well. All good. Thanks everyone.

I like the way you have it on in the picture. It's hipster. Going more formal... I frankly might vote for return. It's a tough neckline and boxy cut... I'd personally end up frumpy I think.
I've tried many of your ideas. The scarf, the collar open over the top of it, various round and boat neck tops. It's an unlined jacket, so a turtle neck, which may well work, is too hot for a transitional jacket. An interesting exercise in styling a difficult piece anyway. It came from Sussan in Australia. And that's where it is going back!

Thank you ladies. I will go with my instincts and return it. Possible, but a lot of hard work. The sort of piece you keep passing over for something that works better. Thanks for the cowl neck suggestions. I have a couple of round neck jacket patterns I want to make, though with a much higher neck, and these ideas provide food for thought for those.
I like the colors and the idea of this but I think I'd exchange this one and try to find a similar one with a different neckline. It's just too tricky to style and you want a jacket you can wear a lot, right?

I agree with others, you need either a top with a higher neck (turtleneck, collared shirt) or a knit top underneath that won't show so you can basically wear it as a shirt.

That said, I have given up on round neck cardigans and blazers for exactly this reason. I find vnecks and collared jackets much easier to style and more flattering.

Could you try leaving it unbuttoned with a tee underneath? I have a similar linen one although it has shorter sleeves and I usually wear it with a long tee. I do admit though it has some limitations in styling.

Try leaving the jacket unbuttoned, wear a cowl-necked top, and drape the cowl over the neckline of the jacket. You might have to play around with it a bit to make it work. I had a happy accident recently with a cowlneck and a short fitted jacket in this way.
Oh - I've looked at jackets like this! Are you in Australia? I wonder if it is the same jacket that I considered!

I'd wear it with a very plain tee/tank underneath. Mirror the neckline if you can, or even go slightly lower. I probably wouldn't button it, but allow it to "close" near the top.

Add a pendant necklace to hang just at your bra-line, to draw your eye down, away from the neckline.

Scrunch/roll the sleeves up a little.

Wear it with jeans/combat pants to "grunge" it up a little bit. It's a bit of a "grandma" piece, so I think you need something quite modern feeling to keep it looking current!

I'd also consider a scarf in colder weather, with a long sleeved tee underneath - the sleeves could peak out too - I'd keep the jacket sleeves scrunched/rolled.

Given the neutral colours of this particular jacket, it would also look great with a pop of colour - chunky beads, belt and/or shoes, depending on how much of a pop you are after!

That's what I'd do anyway!!

I was thinking about a dress shirt with a collar that you could fold over the top of the jacket. Or a plain tank or tee underneath and a scarf.

What happens if you don't button the top button, but instead use the second one? That way I think you might be able to layer a collared shirt (also open at the top button) under it. Pull the lapels of the shirt over the collar of the jacket. I think this would give a pseudo v-neck effect, plus add some lapels to modify the neckline.

And how do you feel about leaving the jacket completely unbuttoned? Then I think you might be able to wear some more styles of necklines under it.
Ah, this tricky neckline. I know the feeling. I had to donate a jacket of mine like that. I think it's particularly hard for those of us with shorter hair. There's nothing to fill it in.

A turtleneck CAN work...but it's not the best for most. A scarf can fill in the neckline, if you're into wearing scarves. You can also go for a round neckline that's basically identical to the jacket's. Or a slightly lower scoop. But these are not always easy to find.

Is this jacket from J. Crew? Jeneva bought a similar one and has styled it very successfully. But I can't recall the neckline in hers; it may be different.

I don't know about a solid color blouse, but I think a solid color turtleneck or mock neck would work. I think a scoop/boat neck top only works if you can't see the collar. With a top that you can't see the collar, a fun small print top would add a little playfulness.

Having said that, it has been my experience that if I have trouble styling something, I usually don't wear it and end up wishing I had returned it. Does this top fit your style goals? Do you have at least two or three things to wear it with?

I have a similar style neckline on a blazer/coat, and here are some pics to show how I've styled it. I have also worn it with a lightweight turtleneck with and a striped T-neck (you couldn't see the T neckline).

I will be interested in seeing what others suggest. I just donated a cardigan with the same neckline because I could never make it work in my wardrobe. You can try filling in the neckline with a scarf, or a pussy bow blouse, or a shirt buttoned up, but unless you really love the jacket I would suggest returning it for something easier to style. It looks like a good fit and the fabric is interesting.

It is well made and good colour. But I am having trouble styling it. It's not a good team player. A hero is ok if I can make some knit tops to go with it, but what style? The neckline seems to be the problem. Thanks ladies.
