From the side, the gap doesn't bother me since the boot has the vibe/look of a cowboy boot. I have the Janes in red. I got them at Thanksgiving time and have worn them to death since then. I have worn them with leggings; skinnys and leans, both with and without the thick boot socks; and under bootcuts. I have not been bothered by the gap in mine--my calves are 13 1/2". Because the leather is not soft, they don't "bag" at the ankle either. It's just up top (drat those skinny calves) that they gap, but in a way, because they have no zip and are stiffer, wider calves might actually not be able to pull them on. They are comfortable and easy to get on my feet (a huge bonus after the Rorys). But are they too big in the calf? I can slide my whole hand in them with these thin socks. In leans they do not gap as much. They are a stiff "western" style, so maybe that's okay? I can see wearing them, but if they are not a 10, then back they'll go. </p>
