I agree with everyone else - the first pair are great, but the other 2 don't fit you well. Fun trousers!

I like 2# and #3 best by far. Nice trousers as is! They are supposed to fit just like that. I vote return the rest.

Was there consensus? I have not read the comments.

Isis, I love the first pair and the last pair, with the waist nipped as you've shown.

The second pair, the skinnies, though, reminds me a lot of the ones I sent back. As you said, they get "hung up" on the thighs and calves. I vote to return that pair because of that.

Jyoti, Andrea, Looks like we are have a consensus!

I'm glad I took the time to take all these pictures and post even the second pair, which I knew I didn't like. I remarked to Lisa on an earlier thread that a goal this year was to learn about fit, and I've learned a lot in this single post!

Jonesy, Thanks for the wisdom. I think you identified exactly the problem with the second pair; they are tight in the calves and that causes everything to bunch up. Now that you point it out, I can see that!

JJsloane--thanks for taking the time to post pictures! I really like the way you have styled your versions! I knew you had the second pair, and I ordered them because of you!!! (In fact, I think they look much better on you in the back and the front, as I remember from your other posts!) I think that your calves must be smaller than mine, and maybe your thighs, so the pants don't get hung up on them and they drape better.

Amy, I was hoping someone with sewing skilz would give an analysis! Very helpful; thanks! And you cannot be too simplistic for a beginner like me! The third version actually look great on JJ, see above, so I think it depends on exactly the combo of rise, hips, etc.

Isis, posting my first thoughts, w/out reading other replies:

I like the first pair, both as-is and modified (though I think I prefer as-is).

Second pair - send back

Third pair - I like them, but not as much as the first.

I like the first pair of pants. I wouldn't keep the other two-- the last are too big and the middle ones are a skinny fit, but are baggy throughout your thighs, so basically I don't think the other two fit well.

The first pair appears to fit you fairly well in the waist without taking it in (from what I can see). They fit well in the hips as well and continue down to give you a nice straight leg line. These are definitely a good, classic pair of pants that you could wear casually and non-casually.

Isis, how pants are supposed to fit depends on their style. Jeans are generally supposed to be form-fitting and dress pants are generally supposed to have more ease and drape rather than squeeze Of course, there are countless varieties of those types of pants with different fit requirements.

Where the waistband is supposed to sit depends upon whether they're meant to be low rise, mid-rise or high rise pants.

Judging from the photo of the pants on the model, these are meant to be low-rise pants. They're supposed to sit an inch or two below your natural waistline, which is the narrowest part of your body above your hips and below your bust (I do not mean to be overly obvious here, but I've been surprised at how many people don't know where their natural waist is...they assume it's where their waistband usually is, but fashions change.)

I wouldn't think twice about the back of the pants sitting higher than the front. I generally have the opposite problem. The pants were most likely designed for someone with a larger posterior than yours, so there is a longer seam from the crotch to the back waistband than you need to accommodate extra tush. To me, this is not a real issue.

In fact, I think the first pair of pants look fabulous on you.

I don't like the fit of the second pants at all. I haven't seen those pants look good on anyone. I think there's something wrong with that design.

The last pair is just too big.

I hope this is helpful!!!

I have the first 2 pair and I went with a 12 in the first and a 10 in the second. I realized I have a short rise and an undefined waist so these styles (under the belly button) work best for me without creating any muffin top.
I think the first ones should be a bit slouchy (they do have 2 belt loops) as I wear mine to work. I tried 10 and 12 in store and went with the 12 for this style (photos 1-2).
I treat the plaids kind of like skinnies (photo 3). Your rear view is much better than mine, but there is a lot more bagging so maybe a smaller size?

I think the 3rd pair looks good on you too with maybe a take in at the waist. Their sizing is a bit all over the place, but thankfully they have free ship and returns so I've just reordered a bunch in 8 of the chino style (the 10s were huge on me and I'm more a 10/12)

I think mostly if you are comfortable in them they will work. I love the lower rise, the lining in the tweed ones and most of all for me the 32 inch inseam means no crop pants!

I like the first pair a lot as-is. I think they are meant to be worn a bit loose and slouchy, like the model is doing. They seem to fit really well with your evolving style too. If you tighten them up at the waist they turn into regular old dress pants (but maybe that's what you're looking for?). The second pair look like they are hitching up on your calves so they look wrinkly and ill-fitting through the thighs/bum--return. The third pair are meh IMHO.

Hi M--Thanks for your advice! I"m not sure they need to be taken in. It all depends on how pants are "supposed to fit", and whether they are supposed to be higher up. (actually I like them better from the back when they are lower....)

I'm trying to find some non-jeans pants, and I am totally confused about pants should fit!

I ordered a second batch of pants from Esprit. Are any of them keepers? I pulled up my shirt to show my belly button; are pants supposed to be a couple inches under the belly button? And see how these pants are higher in the back when viewed from the side? What does that mean in terms of fit?

I can send these all back; any suggestions for pants that would better fit my body type?

#1-7 tweed wool pants, size 8, (5-6 nipped in at waist)
#8-11 plaid pants, size 8 (have 10's but not showing)
#12-16, brushed cotton wool, size 10 (only size available)

Thanks a bunch!!!!
