These were GOOD questions, unfrumped.

Particularly, when dresses fit well - you are right to thrash things out :)

Thanks, Angle. I am steeling myself for return!
The short side hits just below my knee, so longer than on the model. But my druthers would be a bit longer.
Pmus, while I can wear mock necks, I prefer crew or wide shallow crew or boatneck so there’s that.

In saying Next! I should be alert to possibility that a better ML dress will show up sometime. This print is lining not just because it’s somehow too bossy for my coloring and features, but also, it’s not my ideal for wedding guest, or Easter, or Christmas …

Yep.

Why did that seem so hard? I think because so many dresses don’t even halfway fit me, that this one surprised me.

Thank you.

I know this dress, unfrumped!

It was awfully short on the one side. Not so on you?

I had my doubts about the pattern too. So maybe pass - unless you LOVE IT - which does not sound like it.

I'd love to see the dress! Can you provide a link, unfrumped? Then I can provide my two cents more accurately.

At the moment, these are my thoughts:

Good dresses that fit and look great are hard to find so keep this one....

If the colours and patten aren't quite right - deal breaker.

Hence I'd like to see the dress :)

Yeah— for some reason I thought it would be a less scary print. But I think I’m not going to be comfortable with it as a dress.
I had not been shopping or buying much for last 2-3 months because of this underlying dissatisfaction, which was I viewed as not conducive to good shopping decisions, so was doing more SYC.

Plus I’m in the middle of cataract surgery- one down, one to go— and holy moly, what a difference in light and colors! Fabulous! So some wardrobe items look different. And I may end up with daytime glasses some of the time, or otherwise not sure what my “ face decor” will be. So that has been motivation to wait until all that shakes out.

I also had gotten much better at sending stuff back that was not quite right— which has been most of what I’ve tried out over some
months. And I’ve enjoyed developing
that “ muscle “. So, may be an opportunity to flex some more!

How about you do an outfit creation session/ take some photos? And definitely try on with the makeup you would wear. If you haven't tried it on the way you'd actually wear it, you don't really know how it looks.

Also, do sitting test. Striding test. Try with different footwear.

I tend to say no to patterns that feel too high contrast/ overwhelming on me... and to my least flattering colours. But maybe you are being too harsh on yourself about this one. Let our eyes help out.

Oh it’s tough trying to figure out what exactly to do with something that fits so well, but isn’t quite the colour you want.

If it’s easy enough to make it work with those sweaters/vests and you really love the results maybe it is worth keeping.

But usually when I have to talk myself into keeping something that isn’t quite what I had in mind, it tends to linger unworn in my closet and I usually continue to hunt down what I was really after in the first place.

I was inspired by kkards to look at Maggie London dresses. Not navy- too dark, & I have a navy Boden for somber occasions. Not the Angie pink which is too bright. But, because ML fit has worked for me in the past.

The one that caught eye was the ivory/ black mock neck drape front. Sorry, not doing Finds.

It arrived and is an amazingly good and somewhat forgiving fit due to pattern & draping.

Here’s the rub: IRL the light/ dark print ( more of a pinky beige than ivory) looks higher- contrast on me than expected and it seems my face kind of disappears. However, tryon was w/ o any makeup ( which I would wear for “ dress” occasions ), so perhaps I’d look more alive and I may be overly concerned about this aspect. OTOH, it’s in no way a “LBD” or even a little taupe dress or any such wear- once-week staple.

I was engaged in dialog with myself: self 1: You need to return because the print is just not quite right-Next!
Self 2: but the fit is great & fools eye re; tummy, and length is good ( the short side comes to just bottom of kneecap, whilst many asymmetrical hems I’ve tried are shorter. )
Self 1: something else will turn up.
Self 2: Waaahhh!

The for some reason I pulled out a black pullover and a burgundy one and tried those on with dress with black or burgundy footwear and I really loved how that looked. It felt very “ me”. I’ve treated dresses like “ skirts” successfully that way before. Especially with tights and boots. And got me thinking about trying a vest, and so on. Plus I could still wear the dress alone and it would look pretty different ( I mean, not fooling anyone that it IS a different dress).

Soooo- self 2 is pulling ahead to keep it, at a good price point for me as a less- often dress-wearer ( or skirts, though nowadays I specialize in knife- pleated midis) , but still loving occasional change up from pants.
I’m in a somewhat new phase of being less happy with the outfits I can create , and not finding as often that “ certain something “ that looks and feels the way I want to. Whereas I wanted to wear one of these sweater+ dress creations as soon as possible!

I know this is my own inner argument.
But I’d be interested to hear how some of you may have dealt with the but, maybes.
