Staysfit, thanks for your amazing take on scarves and editing! So insightful and handy! Not sure I have a magic scarf, but I'll definately pay attention from now on. I do have a few other magic items, so I know what you are talking about. Wow, I love how I get to know so many different strategies, preferences and perspectives here on YLF! We all need a magic scarf that can take us from drab to fab in a second.

OK, now I'm outrageously jealous because I don't own even one magic scarf! When I cry, get no sleep, wear no makeup, have bedhead..... I'm not above making sure all doors are locked, and no matter what happens, NO ONE IS GETTING IN.

Harmonica, I'm going to throw a wrench in the works because unlike what some other people have said, I do edit my scarves. I have limited storage space for scarves, and even if something is potentially handy for the future, I find I very rarely go back and want it then. I am more inclined to want something fresh or more current, and often in a different color, etc.

When I edit scarves, there are several steps I take. First, I look at scarves I haven't been wearing and figure out why. Often, the scarf is too bulky, too large for my needs, or too small for my needs, it might feel itchy, or look awkward when I tie it, or I just can't figure out how to wear it to make the right color in the pattern sit closest to my face. I also have found I end up with duplicates because the colors are similar and interchangeable so I favor one over the other. I purge these.
.
There is one additional and very reliable method I use for editing. I'm not sure of any other way to say this so I am going to go out on a limb here and be bold. I receive complements when I wear the "right" scarf. I keep the scarves that repeatedly draw complements. I know which they are. Use some imagination now........It's almost like a secret weapon because I know which are my very best. I currently have three scarves that uniformly draw multiple complements a day, every time I wear them, regardless of what I pair them with. I can put them on with a plain grey sweatshirt. I can cry and get no sleep the night before, wear no makeup, have bed head, put on an old tee, yoga leggings, and one of these scarves. People will tell me I look great. These are the scarves to keep. They are magic. I would love to have a larger collection, but I'm glad to have even one, let alone three. They are rare, and maybe elusive, but if you find one or more, hold onto them and treat them like your most precious treasure.

I can not predict with any reliability which of my scarves will have these magic qualities. There is a relationship to hair color, and hair style. I know this because the magic scarves in my closet change when these parameters change. Maybe an artist would say they have similar value, intensity and contrast. One of them is a solid color, and it is in fact one of the colors in my palette, but not every solid color in my palette works like this in a scarf. Even the same solid color in a different texture isn't as good. If I wear a similarly colored solid color Scarf, it also doesn't have the same magic. If I pick a pattern in the identical color as the solid it once again doesn't have the magic. This is why I would say to you that unless this scarf has these elusive properties, pass it on.

Thank you all! I've decided to keep the blue scarf this season and sort of keep it in a pre-holding sone for a while. I think you are so right about the frosty green not being a true replacement.

If you are going to get rid of a warm scarf, think if you have an older granny or aunt that would cherish it, or a younger family member or friend who works in a cold office.

It's difficult to have too many scarves. I personally have scarves that I have owned since the 1980s, when I first lived in a place that required them.

I would keep it, too. I find it hard to justify getting rid of winter accessories, because they are everyday wear for half the year here and not having a good selection breeds monotony. I've been looking to add a larger, wrap-sized scarf this year, and haven't found one that I love.

Another vote to keep. It sounds like you have a long winter season and the colors sound perfect to relieve the dark, especially for the cold spring days. I recently bought an icy pink scarf for that reason.

Maybe keep the blue one until you find a replacement in the same color in a size you like better. In other words maybe the new green one, while lovely, is not quite working for you as a true replacement.

I personally have TWO pale blue scarves, one cashmere that I bought several years ago, and another one that is a soft wool and a celtic pattern that I couldn't resist buying in Shannon airport...they are roughly the same size and I love them both and wear them both.

I'm also like Janet, I rarely get rid of scarves unless I decide I really don't like them for some reason. If I'm just tired of the color or pattern I put them away for a while.

I like the blue, and it sounds like you don't really want to part with it. I am reluctant to get rid of scarves because I find that they fall in and out of rotation, depending on what I wear and my mood. If you have storage space, why not keep both?

Thanks, Sterling! I think I was unclear in my writing in my reply.

The blue scarf is *not* as versatile as I like it to be, but I like the fresh colour. The frosty green is more versatile (yay!), but slightly muddier colour, but IRL the difference is almost not noticeable (more in my mind because I know how it looks in a specific day lightning).

Thank you, Mirjana, Sterling and Karie!

Yes, I live in scarves land. The winter scarves come out around Sept/Oct to April/May, but I wear scarves all year.

I'm quite intuitive about editing and reviewing my closet. It's always in the back of my mind, like in thinking of wearing what I have, donate orphans or edit if I find a replacement or improved piece. That's why this question came to mind.

I love the colour of the blue scarf, but it bothers me that it is bulky.
I've been looking for a replacement and found the frosty green which is a perfect size.

I really like that it is versatile, not only a scarf or only a wrap. Then I thought I should only keep one (frosty green), but suddenly I thought I couldn't part with the blue because I like the freshness of the colour.

I have these two wool scarves, but wonder if I should let go of the blue one? They are very similar in colour, much more IRL than in the pic.

The blue one is a bit wide and therefore best worn as a wrap. As a scarf it gets bulky.

The frosty green one is perfect size and can easily be a wrap or a scarf.
