For the first one, I like the pics that have been posted so far, generally showing a white tee underneath.

For the second one, about the only way I can picture it is with a denim skirt and cowboy boots. But that is really not your style. :)

Runcarla, thank you for the great inspirational ideas for styling.
Jane, spray starch sounds like it may add some structure. Good idea.

I am wondering if spraying them with spray starch might help them along a bit. I always find flannel quite an informal fabric and I wonder if you might be able to spray and iron so they are crisper - IYKIM. I like shirts that you have - great colours!

Rachylou, I know you like a good red/blue plaid and I do too.
Runcarla, thatvis a good idea. A style lab will be tried, I hope this week, although this will be a very busy week.
Thank you for your helpful comments. I take each to heart and would love to save these shirts due to a tight budget and that there is really nothing wrong with them. It’s just me.

Shevia, those are wise words. Since neither shirt sparks joy I thought I might remove them to wear other things more or make room for something I really like. Unfortunately, I am not seeing anything that ticks all the boxes for replacement and I could use the color and pattern for my cold seasons. Being on the far side of menopause, I run cold yet am trying to avoid fibers and manufacturing processes that put toxic waste and petroleum into the eco-system or manufacturing practices that exploit the poor. Buying second hand seems the best solution these days but it takes time and patience to find what I need, especially high rise pants. They just have not reached second hand yet here.

I brought two flannel shirts on my trip to Seattle, and I’m glad I did! It is colder here than home, but soon it will be cold there, and I believe I will appreciate them quite a bit. A red plaid from Levi is worn mostly with dark wash jeans - tucked and untucked. A newer brown and black plaid I wore tucked into black cropped trousers.

I like your red plaid the most. It looks classic to my eye and the kind of top one might like to keep one of, because sometimes it is just the thing to wear. The lighter one is trickier, and I would say pass it along, except that that style of ruffle looks to be very on trend this season. It might be worth doing a style lab with this one.

Ardiff girl, I just saw your great suggestions. Thank you for the ideas. I think a semi tuck may work even if the pant rise is less than ideal. I am passing on my one pair of olive jeans and looking for a pair with a higher rise.

Thank you, Sarah, a pile of pearls would chase away the lumberjack or cowboy connotation. Joyce, I have so few prints or color for cold weather that I think that shirt on a snowy day would be great, especially under the red quilted vest. Kkards, I live near a large university where one regularly sees college girls wearing flannel shirts like that, so it seems a young look, but maybe I can polish it up a bit with bling and a velvet tee or substantial knit top under it. (I don’t own any long sleeved tees). Maybe a short sleeved tee layered over a long underwear shirt under the plaid shirt would work.

I hadn’t been wearing my plaid shirts for a while but now that Autumn is here I m on it again.l like both of these on you .Can I suggest either tucking them ,or wearing them open over an under layer or knotting them at the waist over another layer ,obviously. What works for me is picking out one of the colours in the plaid and wearing that on the bottom. For example you could wear a red skirt/trousers and a blue belt with the first shirt and maybe blue footwear. The second one is asking for olive or tan bottoms with maybe a tan belt and footwear?Im sure that you can come up with some great outfits with these and plaid shirts are a classic so will never go out of fashion.

For the red/blue one, I have seen chambray button ups styled with piles of pearls and it’s an interesting juxtaposition — maybe that would be something to try with the plaid too?

I'm another who LOVES plaid but struggles to wear it. I like to wear them open, over a tucked tee or tank, or layered under a solid vest or solid colored jacket (using plaid to break up the solid-on-solid). Like Janet, I find wearing them with bottoms that aren't faded blue denim helps. I pair them with olive chinos, white jeans, or dark grey jeans.

I agree with LisaP, flannel shirts are garments that I admire on others and have tried twice for myself and just cannot feel like me in them. I think it is a question of whether you want to wear them. They look nice however you have other tops that I prefer and if you are not feeling that they are true to your style, then donate. For me it was a relief to clear those two plaid shirts from my closet.

While I really like the colors of both on you, if you decide to keep either, I think they need styling with either the semi tuck mentioned, worn as a layer, or maybe worn open with a fabulous tee underneath.....sort of like a jacket on a busy fall day. I’m used to seeing you with more polish, so to my eye, the flannels need to be in a partnership with something more fab in order to do you justice.

I have precisely one tartan shirt and am forcing myself to wear it to get to 30 wears. It is at 27 right now. I feel a bit too masculine in it.
I presume you liked these when you bought them? But I’m really with Lisap and Sal, that they don’t really look like you ( or not the you I am used to) and you have had lots of other great tops that look better than these.

In the past couple of years I've not been a real regular here and I can't say I know your style well at this point Joy, but one thing I have done with plaid shirts is wear them with an asymmetrical midi skirt (or dress, just worn under the shirt) and tall boots. This helps me get away from straight-up lumberjack -- although that look is entirely acceptable in my neck of the woods! The tall boots though help keep a rugged balance top and bottom. Combat or other stompy boots would also work.

That said, these shirts in particular don't thrill me...but that doesn't mean you won't find ones that make you feel sharp! I know that there are lots out there that don't suit me at all, yet I love the ones that do.

It's my opinion that plaid shirts are either your thing or they're not. Having to make oneself wear one kind of answers that question. The second one, while great colours for you , has a lot going on with puff sleeves and cuffs and a yoke and not being matched at the front. I don't see it as really "you". Sorry to be negative :(

Oh, good! Solutions! Angie I feel much better with the semi-tuck but I need to be sure I wear high rise jeans. Toronto Girl, I think bling will help. I have pink sparkly earrings that will work with the second shirt and deep blue sparkle for the red and blue. I also plan to try my metallic belts and shoes. The red and blue sequined flats will work with the first shirt. Great idea.
Janet, I think you are on to something. I will try the second shirt with my blush jeans and I have a watermelon color that may work with the first shirt.

Ok, here’s my thing with these kinds of plaid shirts. I have to style them with pants and jeans that are not faded blue denim, or I feel like I belong down on the farm. I realized that a while back. So I like the idea of trying to wear these with more polished, slightly dressier, or colored bottoms — that may help you feel less lumberjack!
