Thanks so much to all of you for the extra ideas and support!

Kristen, I'm actually in the same boat - all of the jobs I ended up with in the past were also through networking, even though there were some prospects that I found in other ways. I appreciate the reminder! I'm not sure I could make 3 *new* networking contacts per week, but maybe I can make it a goal to contact 3 people (family, friends, etc.) that could be helpful in networking, just to make sure I'm staying in touch (or in some cases, getting back in touch.)

LegacyOfPearl, your advice is spot on, and Angie just created a separate thread for today so I can start to develop a rough plan of goals to accomplish for each day. I'm starting slowly since the main goals I want to accomplish for this week are making sure I'm prepared for interviews, but it would help a lot to be able to "check off" a task I've accomplished for the day.

MariannaCecile, I'm so glad you are joining too! I appreciate the company.

Oh Angie, if you have some time I'd really appreciate that! I've been lacking motivation lately (seems like a common problem!). I have so much free time on my hands right now and I could be SO much more productive than I've been. It would be great if you could keep me accountable (only if you have a spare second, though!)

What a wonderful thing to do here! Angie, you're the best!

Kari: Your goals sound great. The best way I found to stick to a schedule (as a mom+wife+manager+phd student) is to plan the week roughly and know on advance that each activity has a time slot in your week. Then you don't panic or get overwhelmed by how many things you need to do and focus on the task at hand. Don't forget to schedule YLF time!

Kari, these sound like great, measurable goals!

One piece of advice on the job-hunting (I spent several years as a recruiter): get out there and make contacts with people. Old co-workers, former bosses, friends of friends, friends' spouses, second cousins, everyone. Don't beat around the bush; tell them you are job-hunting and ask if they know of any openings. And paint them a mental picture of the type of job you are looking for; they might only think of you as Employee A (an engineer or marketing person whatever it was that you did before) but you want them to tell you about Employee B jobs (receptionist, vice-president, dentist, whatever).

40% of all job are found through networking. Every single job I have ever had I found in this way -- and I have had six completely different careers in my life! My girlfriend had been looking for a job using the blind submitting-resume approach since last year with no success. Finally she agreed to try networking with some old co-workers; we made a list together of people she should approach, and practiced things she should say, etc. After talking to the first person on her list, she had her first interview of her search. She started her new job today.

It works! I promise!

So I would say add to your goals for the job hunt: Will contact 3 new people per week.

Wow, Angie, thank you so much for getting this exercise started for me, and for the rest of you for chiming in and bumping so I would see the thread. This is an incredible community indeed - I am amazed and so appreciative of the support you have offered & provided.

Three months, by the way, is actually a great timeline - I have a pre-arranged trip planned with friends on Dec. 1, so if I succeed at my goals I'll have a built-in "reward" in place.

Okay, below are my big goals with rough ideas of what I should aim for each week. Does this sound like a good breakdown? I am very open to suggestions!

1. Have a new job (or, knowing the difficulty of the current job market, at least a strong possibility of a new job)
- Apply to at least 3 different jobs weekly (or maybe it should be 5, one per day?)
- Spend at least 2 hours per week working on resume - fine-tuning, adjusting based on job advertisements, experimenting with different formats or structures

2. Be consistently strong and fit
- Complete Couch to 5K conditioning program 3x weekly (There is a 5K run in early October that I want to successfully complete.) If the 5K becomes easy, I'll start the 10K training program.
- Starting this week, attend one dance event weekly (I do Scottish Country Dance, and this week classes resume after being on break for summer)
- Visit the gym at least once a week (for cardio, swim, or fitness classes)
- Track exercise on a calendar to keep me accountable
- To reform my bad eating habits, get back on South Beach Diet plan starting today (it's been very successful in the past in breaking bad habits, I've just let myself slip lately.)
- Try cooking one new, healthy recipe per week

3. Have a plan for a more long-term career track (I've been mulling over several different possibilities for the previous year, and I really want to figure out which career track would be the best decision for me.)
- Spend at least 2 hours weekly researching programs that would lead towards the paths I'm exploring
- Make at least two contacts per month with people who could provide more information about one of these career tracks

4. Maintain a positive outlook about myself and my future (My mood and energy typically plummet with the decreased daylight in winter, and December tends to be the worst time, so I really need to watch out for this one.)
- Exercise 30 minutes 5x weekly to boost endorphins
- Use SAD lamp in mornings when energy starts to go downhill
- Leave the house at least once a day
- Visit at least one friend each week

Your "goal setting and accomplishing marathon" has begun, Kari! Before we start holding you accountable to your goals, you’ll need to set them and break them down into stages and tasks: month, week and day.

Start by setting the BIG goals you want to accomplish in 3 months. Then work them back to one month, then a week and finally day to day. For example, (and these are completely hypothetical), in three months you want to:

1.	have a job
2.	run 5 kms without stopping
3.	lose 5 pounds
4.	enjoy clear skin
5.	spend quality time with friends and family

Once you have these in place, you can take one BIG goal and break it down further. For example, in order to find a job you have to do research, update your resume, volunteer, learn new skills and network. Then set monthly, weekly and daily goals on how to accomplish the BIG goal.

We’ll start this support process by having you set your BIG goals. Once we know what those are, we can help you break down the relevant tasks to achieve that goal, AND suggest ways on how to stay sane during the process – like getting dressed and out of the house almost every day.

So Kari, I’m going to hold you accountable to thinking about your BIG goals today. I shall be expecting you to report back on this thread tomorrow! Tomorrow, your task will be to break the BIG goals down to a weekly level. Once you have your weekly goals, we’ll break it down PER DAY.

Of course, this process is flexible and you can chop and change the modus operandi as you see fit because it has to work for you.

We are here to give you structure and keep you motivated because it’s hard to do those things on your own. It should be easier if you have to report back to YLF and big bad Angie daily :0)

On your marks, get set, go! And good luck!
