aloha emily, your outfit sounds great.

I don’t often think about juxtaposition in a specific outfit. It’s more a feeling for me. Getting dressed in one style all over is like having a full furniture set in a room. Some like it but it’s not for me. I avoid wearing sneakers with denim or a blazer with classic trousers unless it’s a suit, for example. It is possible to combine these items in an interesting way but it takes an expert, someone like Angie. I don’t wear dressy things, my way of juxtaposition is to combine classic pieces with casual clothing, like you have done. It’s really easy to do if it feels authentic to you.

Sal--well said. "Wear your things," as many people like to say.
Lise--right. It looks great on some people! Like that is Kate Moss' whole look--tough rocker princess. But for myself, I like to keep juxtaposition mostly to pattern, shape, stuff like that.

Thank you all for great insight and specific strategies!! Suz, your response is a masterclass!! You always look amazing, and I am definitely going to try some of your ideas. Today I’m wearing a soft pink cardigan and white Mary Jane’s with denim jorts- hoping it creates a balance between sweet and strong. I especially like the juxtaposition in one item idea, and your emphasis on authenticity.

Lyn67 thank you for collecting those quotes of great advice! I’m saving them all to try one by one.

Start, sisi, dee and robinf, thank you for ideas for next steps! I’m a big fan of graphic ts with trousers. And I have some converse that are underused. They could be a nice contrast to the soft swishy skirts I like.

Carol, Star and Roberta, thank you for food for thought on authenticity and balancing masculine/feminine vibes.

Angie, I especially like your point that “tough” doesn’t have to be too tough. I’ll experiment some more!!

Emily, such stellar explanations from the Fabbers! Woohooo Suz and Lyn67!

FWIW, I'll add this:

There are casual outfits - and there are dressy outfits. MIX THE TWO.

Think of the components that make an outfit dressy and add one component or a few to a casual look - and vice versa.

Juxtaposition examples from my own style:

pearls with hoodies, Oasis tee and sweatshirts, or casual tops

Oasis tee and pearls with dressy blazer

dressy gold loafers and bag with casual jeans

dressy boots with faded frayed jeans

dressy coats with jeans and casual pants

casual sweaters and sweatshirts with big dressy skirts

dressy coat with crossbody

dressy coat with sneakers, casual boots, and crossbody

motos jackets with dressy trousers or dressy skirts

low profile sneakers with shirt dresses and suit trousers

denim with anything dressy

To Star's point, I also add a "tough" piece to my pretty pieces, but I don't have a hard-edged look because I don't wear black, grey and olive. Most of my items are refined with a good dose of "pretty and classic". My tough pieces are therefore less tough than the norm. There is a soft touch to all of them! For example, my motos are peachy-toffee and green. My stompy boots are cream. My Chucks are cream. My western boots are a soft cognac, My aviator has contrast oatmeal trim.

Hope that helps!

What Sisi said really rang a bell with me. If I put a lovely silk scarf together with a cashmere sweater, I feel too fussy/matchy/"lady-like". but if I put the same scarf wth a denim jacket, I immediately feel more comfortable and myself. Sneakers with a suit is another example. I have always erred on the side of matchy, and that served me well when I was younger and aiming to look professional and competent. Now I want to look more free and individualistic, and a little juxtaposition helps me do that.

CAROL you make a valid point. It occurred to me too that if it is not that instinctive to mash up the feminine and the masculine maybe it is preferred being one or the other and wouldn't feel authentic mixing the two.

I think texture is a great way to start--easy to put satin with tweed, for instance. I also think the dressy/casual idea is WONDERFUL, because it is a very current idea that can work in so many environments--cafe, work, restaurant, etc. Something about that combo is encouraging the entire country (and others?) to embrace comfort while also celebrating nice things. I enjoy practicing dressy/casual, but I don't put a lot of time into it. A sharp outfit with comfortable or sporty footwear is an easy way to go.

When you get into personality stuff--tough/delicate, masculine/feminine, etc. I don't think it's necessary to combine those unless that is truly your personality. If you add a strong-personality item to your outfit just to make it interesting, it won't look good unless it really is "you." Many people look good on one end of the spectrum or another--K.D. Lang, masculine, Fran Drescher, feminine. Elle Fanning, delicate. Kristen Stewart, Avril Lavigne, tough.

That is a great question and I love the informative responses! I have a problem with that too and when I look for online inspiration they never look right to me. Personally I would never wear strappy heeled sandals with raw hem jeans and that is often how they are shown. But then again, I don't own strappy heels so maybe the issue is that part of that juxtaposition isn't "me".

I do like to wear graphic tees under a blazer or jeans with dressy tops. I never want to be overdressed so that tempers that feeling.

SUZ explanation is awesome, and if I were doing juxaposition specifically for a hotter climate, (I believe you live in hot climate) I'd be combining items like:

- Distressed or faded jorts with a silky style top and strappy sandals
- graphic tee with a flowy midi or maxi skirt
- flowy dress with casual sneakers
- a white tee tucked into a vibrant midi skirt or flowy pants and flat sandals or flip-flops
- a solid colour minimal style dress with a chunky sandal like a birkenstock.

These would be some of the ways I would incorporate juxaposition for myself.

All what lyn 67said! And as Star said, for me it comes instinctive. I remember that one day, absent-mindedly, I put together an outfit made of silk blouse, dressy trousers, dressy shoes and a classic coat. I looked at myself in the mirror and thought "gah, no". I replaced the trousers with jeans and the coat with a puffer, and felt immediately better. Just throw into the mix an element or two that are in contrast with the rest of the outfit.

For me it comes naturally to juxtapose delicate and tough. I have never really thought it through until you asked. I seem to gendarise an item automatically and then I make sure I wear a feminine and a masculine piece in one outfit. The classics are neutral, so if I am wearing a classic piece I still include one fem piece and one masculine piece. For example I am not really into florals but I do have a couple that I like so when I wear a floral top I would never pair it with a feminine swooshy skirt. Too feminine for me. I would rather pair it with masculine jeans or a cargo skirt. I want to juxtapose dressy and casual but this is still work in progress for me because I am naturally not dressy.

What a great summary did you write Suz! I use to wear a denim jacket over a summer (or smarter) dress/skirt outfit from what if feels like ever! And, wow, I already knew some of your items here but would have loved to see you modelling that gorgeous outfit!

We have had threads about juxtaposition in the past I think and this is a theme also fascinating me so I always save other's ideeas for future use, now will cite from my past notes, think it mostly were Angie's directions but may have added other's contributions, too(?). To be honest I unfortunately do not remember where and when exactly did I save these:

"Relaxed Glamour and Elevated Everyday.

It’s very current to relax a glam look, and to elevate an everyday casual look. This brings us back to the important theme of juxtaposition.

You might relax dressy pieces by combining them with denim, motos, aviators, slouchy bags, crossbody bags, or casual footwear.

Wear a tee under a blazer.

A cropped sweatshirt with a fancy skirt and heels.

Throw a tuxedo jacket over utillity pants or leggings.

Wear dressy clothes with flats.

Add sparkle to jeans.

Wear a cashmere wrap or ruana with joggers.

Add a silk scarf and pretty sandals to parachute pants and a shirt.

Add chunky glam necklaces to slouchy sweaters, sweatshirts, and knitted tops.

Wear a short puffer with a fancy skirt.

Add a crossbody bag to dressier attire.

Add a fancy clutch to jeans.

Style your hair, wear statement eyewear, throw on a belt, and add jewellery to a simple shorts and tee outfit.

There are countless ways to relax some looks and elevate others. Choose the ways that best work for you and your style."

For your further refference I have highlighted in bold those I already do myself and, I think when you attempt on doing these you really have to pay attention on each item's own condition because it can spoil the overall impression if something is overly worn out or grungy (it is surely not the case on this forum but YKWIM) just my 2 cents.

So...my thoughts, FWIW, is that the first step to making juxtapositions work is to ensure that both parts of the equation feel authentic to you. Sounds easy, right? But it isn't always easy in practice.

Let me illustrate. Left to my own devices, my style will always skew quite classic, maybe a little preppy. Nothing wrong with that, but for me it is missing a little something. About a decade ago I decided that I needed to "edge things up" a bit and I went on a hunt for a moto jacket. I found a really great classic black moto jacket at Zara. The price was right.

But I could not get my head around wearing it. It's just wasn't me. It would definitely have added the edge I was seeking, but it was way too harsh.

I ended up getting a blue moto, which worked much better. So it wasn't that I couldn't wear a moto and feel like myself. It was that I could not wear a black moto and feel like myself.

Anyway...my easiest juxtaposition trick is to combine something dressier with denim. So....if I'm wearing a dress or a skirt, I might wear a denim shirt or jacket. If I'm wearing denim bottoms, maybe a blazer, or a silk blouse or structured cotton top.

Combining other textures and different levels of refinement in an outfit can create that dressy/ casual or tough/ delicate juxtaposition, too. A chunky sweater with a satin slip skirt and boots. (I hear you on the extreme seasonal confusion of some runway outfits, though....).

Another easy casualization/ juxtaposition tip is to wear a suit (or trousers, or a skirt) with a graphic t-shirt and/or sneakers. Easy peasy. ,

You can also wear a structured outfit with a slouchy bag (or vice versa).

One of the easiest tricks of all is to buy individual items that can embody juxtapositions in themselves. They are a bit unexpected. So...maybe a blazer in denim. A cashmere hoodie. Or a tulle skirt in tartan. Metallic sneakers or oxfords. Those maybe aren't the best examples, but you get the idea. A few items in the wardrobe that contain these tensions can really help create more options.

Today I wore an outfit that might qualify as the kind of thing you are aiming for, though perhaps not in your climate! Velvet crops (texture is luxe but crops are inherently a bit casual). Combat boots in plaid (casual, whimsical, and a bit tough). A polo necked merino sweater (casual but structured). An opalescent puffer jacket with fuzzy lining (built-in juxtaposition because puffers skew casual and so does fuzzy lining but the opalescence skews dressy.) And a small structured bag (structure reads as dressier but a crossbody is a bit casual.). Plus a scarf to soften the look (and keep me warm when walking.) I also wore a textured cognac belt. And chunky silver jewellery -- earrings, ring, bracelets, watch. All in all, it felt casually festive for a friend's book lauch and after party plus a long walk from one venue to the next.

Juxtaposition has been on Angie’s trends posts for many seasons now, and I love it in theory, on the runway, and as style inspiration. I struggle to make it work for myself in real life. I think it takes such a knack or a well-trained eye or both to create a harmonious blend of contrasts like dressy/casual, tough/delicate, etc. My efforts often feel unbalanced. Street style pics don’t help because the looks are so often bonkers- they leap into extreme seasonal confusion, like chunky wool sweaters over mesh skirts. I’d love to hear ideas for juxtaposition formulas that work!
