The avocados are expensive right now, so keeping them in the fridge slows the ripening so that we don't lose more to rotate than we sell. For personal use at home, it isn't necessarily a must-do. When customers ask me how to pick the best/yummiest produce, I always tell them the ugliest one probably tastes the best! The pear that's just turning brown is the sweetest. The ugly cantaloupe are the most cantaloupey. We don't grow any of the stuff we sell, we work with farmers in the area and region and get our stuff from them. My boss can tell you a story about each items2privenance. Our tomatoes come from the same family farm in Ben Wheeler TX for the last 6 years and counting, they were luckily spared by the tornadoes this spring. Brad delivers okra and squash to us. Our goat milk comes from the same farm the goat came from, as does the goat milk soap; while thy don't specifically say it's organic stuff, I'm betting it is because I've met the couple that runs the farm and they're way crunching than me And so on. I get to connect with people, over food. And it's good food.</p> <p>Xtabay, yes, we are trying to become as self reliant as we can. We grow veggies, hunt meat, have chickens for the eggs, compost, etcetera. We are still connected to the grid in many ways, but we don't rely on it completely. We're looking into solar and wind, and drilling a water well, and etcetera. And yes, the animals at work are challenging. The goat won't eat watermelon if you give him one, but he will steal watermelon all day long. The pig just wants to be under my feet all day, either begging for food or napping. I shop a local farm family's market every weekend and get the best stuff.
