I love your statement about regular people rising to the job of upholding the law. To me, this is one of the concepts that America is built on - regular people rising up, especially together, to do good.

Rae, the one hold-out did NOT stay for drinks. I guess everyone else was really mad and felt he had his mind made up from the start. He was a pretty intimidating guy so no one could say he was being picked on.

Ooh, how juicy. And how nice that your fellow jurors could get along despite not reaching a unanimous vote - so not "Twelve Angry Men." I almost was put on a jury once for a prison murder/manslaughter trial and was so relieved I didn't get called... really didn't want to have to argue with anyone during deliberation, lol.

I love how you all focused on the burden of proof and the evidence provided. Hearing this kind of restores MY faith, too.

Thanks for sharing that interesting tale. As Isabel said, it is actually sad that drugs led to loss of life and potentially freedom. Whenever asked to do jury duty, I always defer it by saying I am a physician (I wonder if physicians would save people or want to throw them under the jail?). But I do love crime drama. Maybe someday...more likely I will be a defendant in a lawsuit! (Not really, I have a very low risk practice).

Yah sounds like they dropped the ball on a few things Una, which is unfortunate considering they have someone that turned himself in. It is a pretty fascinating job especially in cases like that. It sounds like you had a really good jury though. I've been to a few judge and jury trials that were pretty important, and the jury honestly looked like they were asleep or daydreaming! Lol, I'm not surprised they vetoed the lawyer on the jury though! Haha, especially if your DH is a defence attorney. At least you got to hear all the details though. Do you think you would have vote with the majority there?

It's also interesting to me that the convict voted for guilty. And to be honest I'm even more surprised he was left on the jury. I guess there can only be so many alternates though, right!

Raisin, not at all. The problem here was that with the defendant having turned himself in, they didn't bother with any follow-up work, like fingerprinting or DNA testing the gun, the knife, or any of the other evidence. So we had no idea if the roommate had handled it or even if the defendant had. It was just laziness by the investigating detective. The beat cops are obviously not at fault for any of that.

The lawyers for both sides made clear that this was not like CSI or Law and Order or any of those shows - no crazy showstopping last minute revelations, just hard work and facts as presented.

Am now fascinated with the whole crime lab thing, which I never was before. You have quite a job, girl.

Sounds interesting Una! Being on the cop side of this, I hope you don't feel like they are all slackers. Most are very dedicated. And since I do the forensic examination of crime scenes myself, I can honestly say that most juries have very unrealistic expectations of what forensics can do, and should do. We call it the "CSI effect" ! Sounds like it would have been an interesting case to hear though. I hate all the CSI shows, but I do love the "real crime" ones like 20/20 and investigative reports.

Dianthus, lawyers generally get kicked off juries - no one wants a smart-a$$ lawyer bossing the other jurors around or judging the job the attorneys do in the case. Plus my DH is a well-known defense attorney whom all the parties know. I was truly 100% certain I would not be picked. Perhaps it was my charm and sweetness that sold them? (NOT!)

Race is always an issue - with a minority defendanr from out of town, you don't want an all white city jury as a defense lawyer. Also they said no teachers, because teachers tend to want to save people. Depending on which side you are on, no one with clear biases for or against cops, the system, or too much embroiled in fantasy TV law. There is so much psychology that goes into it, and even then you can be wrong. I was certain the ex-felon would vote to acquit and he was the lone holdout for a guilty verdict.

Very interesting! So strange and complicated. Is a person guilty of the act they committed? I wouldn't mind hearing more of the ins-and-outs.

Interesting too that the guy who held out for guilty had a felony conviction and that his code was a "man is dead and someone has to pay." I don't find that surprising at all.

Una, this all sounds fascinating. Some of the things my friend tells me about what she hears in court is sooooo much better than any soap operating or drama you could imagine in tv! It's refreshing to hear how seriously the jurors took their duty and very concerning how little attention the authorities appear to have given the case.

Wow, that is fascinating. The old cliche that real life is stranger than fiction sure sounds applicable here. ( At least it applies to the Kardashians, if no one else, LOL, but I digress..... ) . It IS amazing how "everyday" people can rise to the occasion. A few years ago, my husband was the foreman on a jury for a murder trial too and he said the same thing regarding how incredible everyone on the jury was. I don't think that I could ever be on a jury...I think that I would just breakdown...plus I would have too many questions. But it is soooo hard to wrap one's head around the fact that people live like this . I also find it fascinating, when criminals end in the justice system against each other. ( A drug dealer being killed by another drug dealer...one ends up feeling almost as if EVERYONE is the victim. )

Hahaaaa, regarding perishing. We wouldn't let you !!!
