I’m not sure what you’re looking for specifically, but Jordan Peterson has excellent lectures on YouTube about Carl Jung. He’s very easy to understand.

Jenni, not at all - thank you for raising it at all! Just being conscious of the fact that there are conflicting 'characters' in our minds is surely helpful. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on it :)

Thanks for the book reco Staysfit and all ... will check them all out!

Shevia and Nemos ... may our coffee date happen some day; how amazing would that be xoxo

I am sorry that it was me who mentioned it but I don’t have a book recommendation. When my friend talked about it in 2011 it just made a lot of sense and I had vague memories of studying Jung in 1979! So I didn’t do more reading. I had been doing a lot of journaling at that time ( this is around 2008-11) after a difficult period of my life. It also helped me to read the book “Quiet” by Susan Cain around the same time ( published 2012) because I had always been interested in personality, Myers Briggs, etc and all of that helped me to realise how thinking deeply about things was part of me as well as being energised by people which is more usual for an extrovert ( ESFJ). So I apologise for not being able to give a more precise recommendation.
I hope Staysfit’s book may be of value to you!

Oh that reminds me of Carolyn Myss. I think she used to come on PBS like Deepak Chopra? Kooky, but I’ve always enjoyed her. She has a whole Archetypes thing with merchandise! Lol

Thanking Staysfit for the Storr recommendation. I have attempted to wrap my brain around Jung several times, even taking a course on him from a Jungian psychologist, and was always completely mystified. Perhaps more background info would help. Fascinating stuff, though!

I like "Goddesses in Every Woman" (Jean Shinoda Bolen). She combines Jungian psychology w Greek mythology, and each of the goddesses represent different personality types or parts of the persona. When I read it, probably 20 years ago, I had the idea that they were a bit static- once an Artemis, always an Artemis. True to a degree, but as life changes, the others can have waxing and waning influence. They've all been for me from time to time. Right now I'm leaning more into Hestia, which was never an influence before.
You don't have to believe in the goddesses as entities- their stories are just used as archetypes. She has one for men too- and some of those archetypes may speak to you too as an influence or shadow side.

Following! I would love to know what influences the voices in my head. There are some strange characters up there, for sure!

I too am watching this space. I don’t know what I think of psychology. Psychology strikes me as a wild field, like economics. Some of it scientific, and some of it pure literary imaginations. And it just occurs to me that it’s hard to get at one’s shadow self until one actually hears what one says and thinks... which is to say, gets beyond the merit of the content and notices the patterns. Like, what’s your favorite/fallback topic of conversation, what do you talk about when nothing really presents itself? I mean, for example, my brother and I argue evolution. My cousin in law, he talks baseball. My bff, recites tv shows to me.

Or what’s your gripe? Because the reality is, while I hate whoever it is keeps putting their dog litter in my compost and they’re certainly going to hell for doing so, it doesn’t actually require my thinking about it every day, altho frankly I do... lol. It controls my life. Lol.

... Or, I guess what’s in the back of mind is what I learned in therapy: I’m full of bs and unmindful mantras! Lolol

Try reading a book by Anthony Storr. Jung can be hard to decipher unless you also understand other analytic theories. Storr makes his work most accessible.

Rachy, good question - the discussion was sparked by fashion but I'm interested in the Jungian theory (but ideally in a way that an average person can apply to their life).

Hi everyone, a while back we had a conversation that raised a few comments around the idea of our 'shadow' (in Jungian terms) and how this influences our style and our life.

I am wondering if anyone who has worked through these issues within themselves could recommend any books/resources they found helpful? I understand the concept intellectually; it's more how to apply it I'm interested in ... but of course anything you found helpful I'd appreciate hearing about.

Thanks! xx
