shevia, that's so kind! I wouldn't consider myself a wardrobe writer, but I've been trying to approach it as part of a set of lifestyle choices. On travel...I was just thinking this morning about how the freedom to travel is something that I've always taken for granted as an American. It feels very strange and sad to have it restricted.

Suz, at least in LA, 826 has taken a lot of their programs virtual, and are still asking for volunteers. I wish I'd been able to do even a few in-person sessions before the lockdown, because I'm finding myself really uncomfortable with the idea of jumping into virtual tutoring without any prior onsite experience.

Also, I've been intrigued by the Icebreaker brand for a while. Their FitFinder seems to suggest their sizing wouldn't work for me for pants, but maybe for tops and accessories.

Thank you, Brooklyn. They started rolling back reopening here earlier this week and, even though the things that were closed were things we weren't doing anyway (closing beaches during the upcoming holiday weekend, and shutting down bars/nightclubs), it hit me surprisingly hard.

AndiB and StyleFan, I've been looking at the various Sanctuary pants. Sadly, hey have fewer options in sizes over 14, and none of them are quite what I'm looking for right now.

unfrumped, thanks for your report on the Paskho pants! Can you tell me how the the ankles are structured on them? Could they be rolled up or would that not work with the shape? I so agree with you that this pandemic is making transitions of all kinds difficult. My son is in his first year of college, and I feel terrible for him, not being able to fully make that huge adjustment. We're all in limbo.

Bijou, the fabric swatch is just black, but something about those plus stitches gives it a different feel!

torontogirl, that's a wise observation, and maybe it's a good idea to just sit with that boredom and understand all the societal and economic pressures that play into it. A whole different level of "doing the work."

nemosmom, see what I wrote to torontogirl, above! The whole situation right now isn't exactly conducive to excitement either.

notsaf, you're in a similar situation, aren't you? I'm sure this year isn't what you expected when you embarked on your time in the UK!

I actually get it, completely. My DH and I separated at the end of January, and I moved mid February for a job change in March. Here I am in June, having just moved and changed jobs again and I can only be grateful that I've moved back to an area where I already had friends and a job where I was already familiar with most everything since I have worked for this guy before. I can't even think about dating right now because I am at high risk of serious complications if I catch coronacooties (I don't mean to make light of covid-19, I just use humor & sarcasm as my armor).
I hope you find the replacement olive pants soon. In times like these, it's nice to have the comfort of a constant foundation for our wardrobe as well as our lives

Your post really resonates with me, Jenn. I look forward to your thoughts and updates every month - thank you thank you for continuing to write them up.

This year has been a blur, and so difficult. The first year in a new location is hard enough, but with the pandemic leaving you sandwiched between two lives, it can certainly make every day feel like Groundhog Day. I think your summer dresses look fab, but totally understand being tired of reaching for the same thing...

Jenn, I think sometimes when wardrobes are as well-thought-out and planned as yours, boredom is a side effect of really having done the work! You have an amazing signature style and such great pieces to support it. Love your uniform and your shirt dress. Going to check out your blog! x

So well said! Empathize with all.
My experience overlaps a bit since I retired ~ 2 weeks before COVID restrictions, and so have been frustrated in not being able to oursue some of the things that are part of making a healthier transition from an intense professional career.
But I think moving to new neighborhood/ place is very hard in the pandemic — in fact I have been grateful we had not combined my retirement with moving! Though I still had the “ retirement plans” of trying to meet more with some neighbors I don’t know very well.

I have an “ olive capsule “ as well , though it includes darker green- so many shades on olive or nearly olive- and likely to expand some of that further since I don’t need more business professional clothing, and since some of the items I can use on a regular basis are in the more casual or “ adventure” clothing lines and colors like olive or khakis.
I have the Paskho Sanctuary pant in dark green. It is quite comfortable but a substantial fabric and somewhat structured, so for me does not overlap with a loungewear type item.

I got these Sanctuary pants from zappos After seeing them posted here and they are perfection! I forget which fabber posted but I loved them on her So gave them a try. They are generously cut and fit really well. I’m way curvier than the fabber that posted. They seem to have other similar styles in olive.

ETA, on technical fabric. I can see how a pure technical fabric might be problematic for your climate.

I recently bought (on sale) these shorts from Icebreaker. They are technical fabric plus wool and are they every amazing!! Super lightweight -- breezy, easy dry, no sweat, pockets, etc. Alas, they don't seem to have any pants now in a similar olive. (Mine are called grey but they are actually a very green-grey cool olive.) But I would keep an eye on this brand next year and see what you can see.

Oh, Jenn, I have heard about that organization and I remember thinking that I'd love to volunteer for them!! I wonder if they will eventually move to some kind of online service. Please let me know if they do. I think it's an incredibly important initiative and so impressed you have joined.

I would love to do something similar here and I think there are probably opportunities -- but not at the moment. There is a great initiative through the local art gallery, people phone seniors and chat for a few minutes a day, maybe read a poem -- but they have have the volunteers they need already.

You are really my favorite minimal wardrobe writer. I have read many such blogs through the years and your descriptions are the most authentic, thoughtful and practical that I have seen. I love the look of the trousers in the first picture - even if they are just a place holder.
As for this year, disorienting is the word. This is the first year in the 23 years I have lived her that I won't be flying "home". My sister's spring visit was cancelled, and we normally have visitors pretty regularly. Now nope. Let us hope this too will pass.

Sal, that's awesome that it inspired you to work on your essentials list. It was a breakthrough for me to realize that, while I have multiple sleeveless black tops, any one of them could function as my essential. It's not essential that I have four and list out each of them, but it's also not necessary for me to pick one and hold that up as the ideal. I just need to know that if I find myself without some sort of black tank in my closet, I'm going to have problems.

rachylou, nooooo! Not NextDoor! My new and old neighborhoods are so different there. In Colorado, if you went on NextDoor, you got arguments about fracking. Here, it's all about what that new business is supposed to be, and why there was a SWAT team on top of that apartment complex (it's a Whole Foods, and there was a guy barricaded inside with a crossbow).

JAileen, those are pretty close to what I'm looking for, except I think I'd prefer something full-length (or even ankle-length) and straight, so I can roll them. I do have a few neighbors I've been able to chat with now and then, which is nice, but like Suz's, they're more acquaintances than friends at this point, and they've been less available as things slowly reopen and parts of regular life resume. Understandably, people are eager to see the friends they've been missing.

LisaP, I figure I'll know them when I see them, too. I'm not sure I'm going to find what I'm looking for in my usual stable of sustainable manufacturers, either, so I've been expanding my search parameters. I purchased a swatch book from J+J, and am glad I did. It definitely gave me a better sense of quality and color than looking at the website.

And as for lockdowns...the governor just ordered bars be shut back down. They were open for all of 9 days. I don't think we'll go back into full lockdown, but I do expect more reopenings to be rolled back. It's frustrating, because we were one of the first places in the US to shut down, and our reopening has been slower than many other parts of the country.

suntiger, I've had olive in my wardrobe for years, but it does seem to suit the times.

Joy, I hate when that happens! You stay safe, too. We're in regular contact with friends and family back in Colorado and so far, so good there.

Runcarla, I really like the idea of just focusing on a couple of colors for a season. I did that with the terra cotta/orange last year.

Suz, I was thinking about maybe trying the Paskho pants. Their sizing should work for me, but I'm not sure about the technical fabric or the construction. Also, I so relate to what you said about acquaintances who might become friends with time. It's also frustrating that I found a great organization to volunteer with (a writing education nonprofit founded by Dave Eggers) and had completed my training with them just a week before the lockdown. I had hoped to use that as a conduit to meet some more like-minded people, but in-person services are suspended for the foreseeable future.

Janet, I can't wait to read your thoughts! Sunday afternoons are a nice to time to sit down and do some wardrobe analysis.

Minaminu, sounds like you're doing great! Here's hoping life gives us a lot more reasons to get dressed in 2021.

Angie, it's a welcome distraction! And thank you on the shirtdress. This easy linen dress has already spent a lot of time on the beach this year. It's perfect for cool mornings by the ocean.

What a great post! It is very inspiring and also reminds me to reflect on my budget and monthly spend. Thank you for sharing! I was very tempted to buy a piece by Elizabeth Suzann but it would have been too expensive with the shipping and duty added. I am sure they will be a great addition to your wardrobe!

June has been a very productive month, I replaced 5 damaged items with a better material and fit and added 1 new. It is also mid of the year and so far I am on track with my planned expenses and still have a shopping list that keeps me focus.

Funnily enough, I started to reflect on the weak areas that I would like to focus in 2021 and have started to plan it already!

I love how thoughtful and analytical you are about your wardrobe! I'm an emotional shopper and dresser, but I'm learning to take a bit more of my cues from people like you.

It's funny you post this now, because I was just a few minutes ago taking a break from editing photos and thinking about doing a recap of my purchases so far this year.

Jenn, I can identify with so much of what you wrote. So what else is new, right? ;)

My family moved just as COVID restrictions were put in place, so it has been really weird living in a new place without being able to engage at all in community life (except remotely) and without being able to make friends. I actually know people around here (as acquaintances) that I had hoped to start connecting with as friends, but as you say, making new friends is not high on anyone's priority list and with reason!

All that has contributed to a rather restricted set of outfits for me as well. Most days I am dressed for the garden or for my walks (which are really more like hikes). Uber casual and simple.

Re your olive bottoms, would the Pashko brand that Angie featured earlier this week work for you? I am not sure of their sizings and they may be sold out, but they did have olive options.

That new sleeveless dress is going to be a clear workhorse for you. And how fun to pick the pattern of your top in advance! Plus signs = fun.

Monthly reviews are such a good idea. I find they help me stay on track and committed to goals. I’m filtering for lavender and olive additions to my wardrobe, so I’m with you on the usefulness of olive bottoms.

You're so thoughtful, which is why I enjoy reading your musings . It must be very difficult indeed to maintain a positive and optimistic outlook under those circumstances - it takes a lot of mental strength to cope.

I too have a pair of loose-fit olive pants on my wish list, and have for a few seasons now. I have no trouble finding heavier weight cargo styles, but I would love a looser fit pair that could be styled both up and down the casual/dressier scale for summer . I'll know it when I see it, I hope.

I'm not familiar with J&J, but I sure like the idea of receiving a swatch of fabric before ordering. What a brilliant idea!

I sure hope you don't have to go into another stay-at-home situation there in California. I thank the heavens everyday for living where I do during this time.

Moving to a new place before a lockdown would definitely be worse than just having an “ordinary” lockdown. I see a friend regularly in our backyards. We sit socially distant, yet can talk, and our dogs goof around together. This might be why I’m still sane.

Re olive pants, I have this pair. They replaced a thrifted pair from Chicos.

https://www.macys.com/shop/pro.....ID=1045485

I feel like I just wrote up May's thoughts, and here we are, halfway through the year. This month's thoughts:

1. Same old, same old. This year has been a blur, with none of the usual markers of time passing. With the lockdown and our family all far away, we didn't really celebrate Easter. Finals week and the last day of school for college-kiddo didn't change anything about the rhythm of our home. No Memorial Day cookouts. Visits from out-of-town guests have been scrapped, and our own vacation plans stopped in their tracks. I know this has happened for everyone, but this being our first year in a new location, it feels like a double whammy of missing our usual life and not really being able to create a new one. When socializing is limited and fraught with peril, "making new friends" isn't high on anyone's priority list.

Which all has nothing to do with clothing, except to say I've been wearing the same things day-in and day-out. Photo 2 is a pretty good example. No socially-distanced reunions with family or friends on the schedule, because we didn't have the opportunity to get to know anyone here before the pandemic hit, and we can't yet travel to/have visits from the people we left behind. Plus, things are looking worse, so I wouldn't be surprised if lockdowns were reinstated soon.

2. HEWI essential search. I've always had a pair of olive bottoms in my wardrobe, and am past due for a replacement pair (the old ones have already gone to textile recycling). I've had the image in Photo 1 on my style mood board forever, and would love to find a pair of slouchy olive pants I could use to create a similar look. I ordered and returned one pair this month, and have generally been having a really hard time finding anything in my size that I think will work. It'd be great to fill this gap soon, as I'm tiring of summer dresses and skirts.

3. Speaking of essentials... I revisited my list in the course of writing a blog post this month, and came up with the graphic in Photo 4. When I'm bored (as i am right now), it helps to remember how, with a good base in place, small additions can unlock all sorts of possibilities.

4. On the way. I do have two new slow fashion purchases still on their way to me. The sleeveless Elizabeth Suzann dress and the woven tee from Jamie + the Jones should both arrive sometime in July. Those two things will bring my total 2020 purchases to 7 items, all shown in Finds. By my rules, I've purchased 5/10 of my statement items for the year. The J+J tee was definitely an emotional purchase. I got a swatch of this "plus" fabric from them earlier this year (Photo 3) and was disappointed when I missed the first release, so I jumped on it when they got another batch in stock.

Thanks for sticking with me through all this meandering! It's nice to get my thoughts in order each month and look back to see how I was feeling about getting dressed earlier in the year.
