I love your new items. They look perfect for beach-walking. Great pics! Here in West Michigan we have beautiful beaches close (1/2 an hour away) and yet rarely go there. I need to make it a priority.

Love your beach pics :)
Sorry about the pants :/ Shopping for them is The Worst! Best advice I have is to just measure everything and try to be as scientific as possible. Or, live in ponte pants for the winter like I do!

Lynn, thanks for the suggestion. I've had luck with Talbots in the past, though I've never tried their jeans.

Barbara Diane, the beach has been such a gift these past few months.

JenniNZ, they're really just the next few beaches down the Pacific Coast Highway from there. Santa Monica is actually the closest beach to where we live, about a half hour drive (or even slightly less early on Sunday morning).

YES. Talbots does good curvy fit jeans. Nice addition, Lynn.

Jenn, YAY! Glad you found some jeans options. (I hear you on the waist alteration complication at the moment. The cleaners I used to go to has also closed down permanently, but I have found another).

YES, I have heard of Warp + Weft, but have not seen or fitted their items.

Jenn- we have similar builds. One brand that has worked well for me in the past is Tablets Curvy Fit jeans. If there is a store nearby you can do pick up of a couple of styles/sizes to try on @ home. However I do not know where they stand from an environment and labor standpoint. Something I will need to research when it is time to replace my jeans.
I also enjoy your wardrobe posts. I like how you analyze and set your clothing goals.

Angie, your list is spot-on! I've owned pants from every. single. one. of those brands! In the past, KUT and Boden haven't fit me well without waist alteration (I have to size up for hips). Sadly, the dry-cleaner/tailor across the street from us closed down permanently during COVID, and I'm not feeling up to searching further afield at the moment. I'd checked US and GA early in my search and found the styles I was interested in out-of-stock in my size, but you inspired me to check again and they both appear to have restocked, so I have some options there! Another company I've been looking at is Warp + Weft. They're a sustainable manufacturer that stocks sizes 00-24. Have you heard of them?

(And I'm always up for talking beaches.)

notsaf, so glad you enjoy these posts. And the perfect utility pants have to be out there, right?

Vildy, I can't wait to semi-tuck that top into some skinny jeans this winter.

rachylou, I'm so envious! My neighborhood only has one clothing store (a vintage shop, which my son loves, but doesn't have as much for me). It's more of a nightlife area, an arts district with 30-odd theaters and tons of restaurants. I honestly don't know if and how we're going to come out of this. The theatre around the corner already has a "for lease" sign in the window, and I'm sure it's not going to be the only one to fold. They've all been completely closed since March.

As for jeans shopping online, may I suggest: Universal Standard, KUT from the Kloth, Good American, and Boden. I think these brands will meet your sustainable and ethical standards too.

I was very pleased to read that Boden has met good sustainable and ethical standards: (#2 on this list):

What Carla said! I feel it! The ocean and the beach! :)

I’ve bought two pairs of utility pants from a couple of neighborhood shops actually. Walking distance. Early in the morning where it’s just me in the shop. But then I’m in a small quiet neighborhood and people are masked up, not at all casual about anything... if someone else wanted to come in, they’d wait outside.

Cheryl, honestly, we didn't get to the beach much either pre-COVID, but now that entertainment options are more limited, we've made it a habit! (Also helps that traffic is a lot lighter!)

Sal, I think I'm just going to take my time, order and return, and hope to get lucky.

Bijou, I definitely would have just bought the same style as my old jeans if it were still available. Same with the utility pants (although maybe two pairs back on those). Now's not really the time to worry about being stuck in a rut, you know? As for the pic...thank you, that's kind! It's far from my favorite recent beach photo, but it was the one that showed that top best. Here are a few others my husband took, just for fun. (Perhaps I should have just posted these as my July summary and left it at that!)

shevia, that's some good food for thought! My thought was that, by declaring certain times off-limits for shopping, I'd be able to spend that energy and creativity on other things during those months. But maybe I naturally back off when I'm feeling like it's taking up too much mental energy, anyway.

I was intrigued by your idea to limit shopping windows. Definitely a potential strategy for the out of control shopper, but that is not you. I think you probably go through non-shopping periods naturally when your mood or needs do not draw you to it. Anyway just a thought.
Otherwise you are doing brilliantly on your plan. I have no advice on jeans as I also find them extremely tricky to buy without trying on, even if I see them in person at a thrift store. I do look at the model carefully and think about her body proportions (not size, more shape) and how they relate to mine and what that does to the fit. Nothing groundbreaking there.

Jenn I sympathise at the impossible task of buying pants online. I have one cut of trouser in three colours, simply because it was a good fit off the rack. You look wonderful in your dresses and the beach picture is one of your best, you look free and happy despite covid and all the disruption it has brought. I hope you and your family stay safe, I would not be shopping in those circumstances either.

Jenn, I hear you on pants. Thankfully I don’t need any new tailored pants right now as - not going anywhere - but some of mine don’t fit the same right now and in the past I might have felt compelled to replace them. I have returned so many online pants purchases over the the years, you would think I would be voted off several retail islands.

I think you are wise to find ways to rest in the

That is exactly why the long board shorts might work. You might also want some of those sneakers designed to be worn in water and a rash guard. I am trying to put together a simple water/ beach capsule in a tight color way. It started with having to retire my one piece swimsuit. Now is a good time to find these things on deep discount, although sizes are getting sold out. It has probably been 20 years since I have worn shorts. I’m not sure I’d ever wear them grocery shopping or even dog walking, but they are fine for home or near water. I hope you find some great items for your birthday.

Glad you found something that worked, Joy! I actually did try a pair of shorts recently (I haven't had shorts in my wardrobe for probably twenty years), but the ones I tried didn't work, and I'm not entirely sold on the concept. Quick dry fabric is definitely a plus for the beach. Somehow, even our most staid morning walks end up with us wading through thigh-deep water and climbing over rock outcroppings to get to tide pools. Lands End sizing used to work pretty well for me, but now my measurements don't fit neatly into any of their size chart categories. Their size models must have very different waist:hip ratios than mine.

Runcarla, unless things change drastically, I'm not convinced in-person shopping is going to be a thing this fall either. My county (which, admittedly, is as large or larger than many states) is still announcing 2000-3000 new cases per DAY. That doesn't seem like a level that's going to get to a point where I'm comfortable going out in a month or two. I only need to hit the jeans jackpot once, though! (And beach walks have been the highlight of our weeks!)

Cardiff Girl, if I get myself a birthday present, it'll be bought online. I have big (at-home) plans for the day, though!

nemosmom, luckily I wear mostly dresses in the summer, anyway. I'm down to just three pairs of (non-gear) pants, though! And only one of them is really warm-weather appropriate.

Style Fan, I also find it a bit harder to buy pants from smaller, sustainable companies because I feel bad about returns with them and I know I'm WAY more likely to have sizing issues with pants than with tops or dresses. It'd be nice to have some go-to styles and shops with consistent product lines.

JenniNZ, right?! The inconsistencies are strange, and the measurements don't tell the whole story with bottoms. There are so many different fit-points that aren't included in the standard waist/hip/length/rise notations.

I feel your pants pain. Just a couple of days ago I received some Lands End board shorts! ( yes, I thought the sky would fall if I bought shorts!). These are 11 inches long and my normal size works and they seem to work with my glucose meter. I had read a review from a woman who wears these all the time, not just around the water and decided 12” might work for my old legs. They are available in a variety of lengths and sizes, plain and prints. Right now they are on sale. They may be something you would like for the beach and maybe more. The fabric is quick dry but not shiny you can get built in tummy control ( I did not).

I’m not sure that I have ever purchased pants online in my whole life? I find how pants fit to be incredibly variable when I try them on.
A pair I tried on the other day dipped down hugely at the back waist while fitting well at the front waist. How could one discover that from pics on a website?
I sympathise.

Jenn, your wardrobe is so well put together. Losing two bottoms is a big thing. I find it almost impossible to buy anything online but pants are the worse.

Oh, Jenn, I can imagine when you keep such a carefully curated closet that losing two pairs of pants can really be challenging! I do hope something comes through for you. If you figure out how to limit your shopping windows, I hope you will share! This is my second year of tracking purchases, and there has not been any consistency with month or season; it's very all-over-the-place.

I love your honesty in posting "real life" outfits and can't wait to see what insights your big "state of the wardrobe" brings! Happy Birthday Month!

The beach pic is better than a ‘try on’ pic, Jenn! Makes me feel good just looking! :-D I like to shop in spurts, but not having access to B&M is problematic for me, too. The only place I’m comfortable shopping atm is a small, but airy thrift shop in my home town! I have read a lot about designers and stores planning to make availability closer to the actual season of wear, so maybe looking for fall items in fall will become a ‘thing’ rather than F/W in August?!
