Thanks Brooklyn. It is the wrong length and yes impossible to layer. Finer merino or cotton is much easier (and just as warm often).

The Charlies Angels and Mary Tyler Moore were my style heroes as a young child in the 70s so nothing has changed.

I agree the chunky sweater hits you at the wrong spot. Shorter would work. I am also attracted to these chunky Ralph Lauren-ish knits (and all knits) but find them tricky both from a flattery view point and for layering (it can be difficult to wear a coat over them).

The rest are great. My favourite is the A-line skirt with red jacket. A funky 70s vibe is becoming signature for you. Well done!

Thanks Smittie. I have had cable cardigans and they are more flattering. I am going to donate this as it is in really good condition (worn four times total - three as ecru - one as olive) and someone will want it.

Yes I do suit dresses, columns of colour and low contrast. I can mix it up but I have to nail the proportions and lengths.

I love any column of colour on you.
The red dress outfit is completely fab!!

I might try the olive knit sweater with some darker (olive?) pants to see if you can get the column of colour going.

I would not give up on cable knit sweaters altogether. Maybe a cardigan with leggings?

bj - yes it need to be a different shape. It is hitting at my widest point - it was shorter but I have stretched it out in the dyeing process. I was originally wanting a warm cardigan and I should have stuck to that....

Congrats in anticipation of you reaching your goal. The chunky sweater is boxy and hits you at an a awkward spot. Look for a sweater in a dense knit with a slight bubble shape and size up. This should stand away from the body enough to be visually slimming. Maybe low contrast bottoms too.

Thanks to your challenge I’m using my clothes more and have (re)identified why I like some more than others. I too am getting dressed better for the most important person in my life.

So many people dress up for strangers and save the sloppy seconds for loved ones. I admit to being guilty of this but I am trying to change by giving myself permission to wear "my good" clothing that had been "saved for good" in the past. Having a smaller wardrobe has forced this transition.

Thanks Suntiger. I am cross with myself re the sweater but I have learnt a lesson.

Texstyle - thanks! I liked this look - there were two other jeans ones that were very very boring!! I do like jeans and maybe I need a refresh. When I look at my WIW it is the jeans ones I usually like the least.

TG - I was okay with this black and jeans look. I do need more red:). And I think the angle isn’t helping with the chunky knit.

Robin- thanks! Yes some things are better in my imagination. The dress has been a great FFBO with these boots and with flat cream oxfords in spring and autumn.

NemosMum- I do like these jeans. Hope your boot cuts work out - I could see them really being fab.

Love the dress + tall boots and the bootcuts! I'm with you re:chunky sweaters, and no longer own any. There need to be clothes that are cozy fleece lined on the inside but look streamlined and work appropriate on the outside

Gosh that red is beautiful on you. Re: the olive sweater, the camera angle might be accentuating the effect that you don't like - I think it looks good? I figure everyone looks bigger in a chunky sweater! That said, if it feels off, then buh-bye. Although the black tops look good, I see your point - beside the red, they don't have you shining. Obviously this challenge has been a great learning experience!

Thanks Carla - you are right re the jumper. Because I have dyed it (pretty well) it is not saleable but I can donate it. And yes another pair of bootcuts is on the want list!!

Joy - you have done a great job on the challenge. Thanks for joining in.

Vildy - yes I think I need to rethink it. I had a long cable knit cardigan that worked quite well. And there are other cosy knitwear options for me.

Lisa - haha the fantasy vs the reality. I think a finer knit I can get away with (eg merino) and I don't think puffers look too bad either....wondering who the chunky knit does suit (Angie maybe, I could see La Pedestrienne in one also).

Cardiff Girl - yes I liked the other three outfits a lot. Never mind - I think I have learnt my lesson (both on pale knitwear and chunky styles)

Jenn- exactly!! I preferred mine in the off white and I think I stretched it a little in the dyeing process so it is a bit longer which is more unflattering.

Sterling - pleased you are learning too. I think it being forced to try and wear pieces that are tricky that is making me rethink a few pieces. And also hardware - I have a pair of moto boots to wear with silver hardware that don't go with lots of tops.

I've always wanted an ecru Fisherman's sweater, but never found one I could style successfully. Always ended up looking like a barrel! So, I have given up on that fantasy. Understand your frustration, though I honour your experimentation. I would suggest that rather than demoting it to loungewear, that you reconsider and pass on it. One thing that I've learned in retirement is that it is as important to dress nicely when I'm 'slumming' as when I expect to go out and be seen by folks who are not family. No one means more to me than DH, so why not be considered when I'm just hanging out? Not over the top, but not my closet loosers. (Hope this isn't too harsh, )

You look amazing in bootcuts, Sal! Maybe dress trousers in this silhouette if you are off jeans? You also do tall boots with dresses really, really well. I'm looking forward to the tricky dress on 1/8. If you have the time/opportunity, you might want to do a dress lab?

I did not wear my chunky pullover sweaters at all last winter. It is probably time to remove them. They are too warm for this more mild winter climate unless I wear them without a coat.

Sal, thank you for this challenge. You did so well. I am still working on it with summer bottoms but am almost into my hot fall stuff ( more earthy and darker colors but still light weight). I found at least 5 things, mostly jeans, that in already out or soon will be. besides summer bottoms, there are some summer tops that I am tired of or seem too fussy, and some bags that are just too small. I have stuck well to my shopping plan with very little added that was not a replacement for something I got rid of. So far I have not placed a NAS order. This is mostly because the pieces I liked most sold out in my size. If they get restocked, I will place an order.

Hi All

The third week was a hit and miss affair. I am only going to show the hits and one miss. My challenge is to wear all my winter clothes in July in outfits that meet my aspiration of casual bold elegance. And to accessorise!

All are work outfits except the last which was travelling to the beach and a winter beach walk.

I did photograph the other looks ( work) and in the weekend lived in gear as we walked, biked and ran at the beach.

Plan
1) the cable knit jumper is now dyed olive after dye rub on the bone colour. I just don’t think the shape does me any favours. I adore the idea of jeans and a chunky knit but in reality I don’t suit it. Cuts me off in all the wrong places and is too boxy for an hourglass shape. I will keep it for lounging at home and working from home to replace a 7 year old grey jumper that is on its very last legs.
2). The outfits I didn’t show feature jeans with black tops. At the moment I am finding this boring on me. Definitely not bold. I have a lot of black tops and maybe it is time to find a second wardrobe essential top. I plan to go through all the black tops and edit a couple out.
3) I am off jeans and sneakers on me. I think I am mostly off jeans.

I am on target to wear everything in my winter closet by the 1/8 ( dinner out that night so will wear a tricky dress that is not casual nor work).

I have two pieces to edit out and am still on my shopping ban til 2/8 when I complete my challenge.

Thoughts and feedback are always appreciated.

Finds for almost everything worn!
