What a wonderful photo. I was just thinking that what I know of the family story should be written down and I do wish I could have gotten more from my parents and grandparents while they were alive. I learned very late what my dad did during and before WWII but he never talked about it. He was In his 90’s when a Vetrans’ administrationer in his small town delved into his service records to try to get him more help. This man wanted very much to meet my father and saluted him and bowed and thanked him over and over. I found out from him that there were many secret missions and carrying of messages between countries. I had no idea except that I knew Dad had met Chang Kai Chek (sp?)and his wife MeiLing of China and carried messages between the British and American generals ( Project Enigma, the cracking of the German code). Later I saw him confront the KKK who burned crosses in front of our house in the middle of the night. He helped create a written language for someAmerican Indian tribes in Oklahoma. I feel humbled that I have done so little with my life. I stand on the shoulders of giants. Pioneers who lived in dug outs on the prairie, who left homes in Europe to come to a country at 13 with nothing and knowing no one. Who lost everything to hoards of locusts and the Great Depression. Who battled MS and dementia with amazing inner strength.
Few of that Great Generation are left.

I'm not a family member, and I'd be interesting in reading the stories and seeing the photos. How amazing to see the country without -I'm assuming-today's crowds.

Bryce and Zion are indeed magical, from what I've seen in photos. Glad your young Mama had fun sleeping in the car and camping.

MsMaven, I so enjoy your photos and and recollections. Bryce and Zion are truly special places. It’s delightful to think of your mom and grandmother touring the region long ago! Their dusters would have been a necessity in those days. Centennius, what a fun and interesting name! I hope you do write down your recollections. Happy birthday to all in your family.

July is a popular birthday month in my family. Here's a photo of my Mom and her parents. Grandpa was born on July 4, 1876. His middle name was Centennius. He was a newspaper reporter but when the US entered WWI he was assigned to inspect Utah roads to make sure they were in good condition. My Grandma (right) was born July 9 and my Mom, July 11. My older son was born July 2, and now I have a step granddaughter with a July 9 birthday.

This was taken at the edge of Bryce Canyon, 1917. I think that might be a sheriff's outfit, because he'd been working as a deputy sheriff a few months. Mom and Grandma seem to be wearing dusters. This was a second-hand army car, a Ford, with isinglass windows. They had to sleep in the car because there were no motels or hotels in the canyons, and cook their meals over a campfire. My Mom turned 8 that summer. She loved Bryce and Zions especially, and said they travelled all over the state. She said it was heaven--she had so much fun. She had two older brothers, not quite old enough to be drafted, and they stayed home.

Grandpa died before my parents married, but I knew Grandma. Mom and her parents all got the flu in late 1917 and the boys took care of them, using dishtowels or old rags for masks. They never got the flu.

Mom wrote a 34-page autobiography in 1981. As I write this, it dawns on me that I should take those pages, illustrate them with some of these old photos, and publish them online.
