Thanks Anne and Deborah! Perhaps it is an Australian custom to give feedback but I think it is one the U.S. should adopt. I am going to pass this info on to folks I know so they can give it a try. The job market is so tough here. Deborah it makes no sense that you didn't get the interview. Seems the company lost out!

Jeanie, as Anne said it is not uncommon practice to request feedback but not a lot of people do. I figured I had nothing to loose by asking, and I must admit I was miffed at not getting an interview:). My skills and experience matched the job description very well so I was keen to know where I may have gone wrong in my application. It can be very helpful if the company is able to provide constructive feedback, which to be honest these guys didn't really. But even so I still learnt something and it was a useful experience.

Great news Deborah. I had been meaning to PM you and ask about the job so glad you got the update.
Jeanie, maybe it is an Australian thing, but I have definitely got rejection letters specifically saying who to call for feedback. I have only had the guts to to it once, and the feedback was extremely useful for future applications for similar positions.

Sounds like it worked out for the best. Isn't that an interesting comment that the polished resume did not get the job. Did I read that correctly? Funny. Your current position sounds right for you. Enjoy your week off and then resuming your new-current role. Congratulations (and yes - shop to celebrate!!!)

Deborah, you are the first person I know who has mentioned asking for feedback when being declined. I am always saying I wish we could get feedback when being declined because it would be so helpful to know how to proceed next time. I didn't know you could just ask! I learn so much here. Interesting that gloss and polish are considered as traits they didn't want. Oh well, sounds like it ended up for the best. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you all, you are so fab!

The reality is that I have been doing much of the new position anyway. My job description was always vague and the position kind of morphed.

I accepted what was a lower level position when I started with this organisation because it worked for my lifestyle when we relocated , it's my area of work and people are great. But I became bored very quickly. After almost 3 years I requested a review of my role because the PD and the actual role were looking more and more different, along with the expectations (particularly travel). So this outcome is after 6 months of review.

My days and hours are the same:). I will be specializing in one program area, which means I hand back another program. I will once again be working at management level, working much more autonomously with the success or failure of my programme stopping with me. I will still be in the same office and working alongside the same colleagues but I now report directly to a manager in Melbourne. The main difference is I now "own" my program and will be actively involved in program development and as the longest standing staff member with experience in the programme will be the "subject matter expert" for want of a better word, within my department (we run the program throughout the state).

I am excited as I will now be working in a situation and arrangement that is reflective of my skills, experience and abilities. I am on a weeks leave now but actually looking forward to getting back to work!!

Thanks for your kind words.

Ps for those that don't know, I work in the Community Services field.

Pps: For those who suggested shopping to celebrate....I just might have a little extra spending money when Lyn D and I meet up next week for lunch and a little peek at Zara and Metalicus!!

There are managers out there who won't hire people who they feel threatens them. This in my opinion, can result in a very mediocre staff. Glad your current employer appreciates your gloss and polish and wants it to stay!!
