Sorry to hear it didn't work out Nicole. And I hate it when they mislead you during your interview and it turns out you have to do totally different things than agreed upon.

Good to hear you still have those hours at your old job. Are you going to look for something new immediately?

OH, well I never actually gave my notice at the law firm. I'm just down to 2 days a week (10 hours total)....so I had not had the opportunity to give notice. So, nothing lost there.

I've already called the owner of the real estate office and told her it wasn't what I had in mind. I didn't want to go into any detail with her because I didn't want her to try to talk me out of it. I didn't give her a chance to object or question me. I was very matter of fact. My daughter was in the room when I made the call and she said "boy mom that was easier than I thought it would be!"

Oh, Nicole--I worked at a place exactly like that when I was 18 (one of those weird places I mentioned above). I ended up working there for a year though, because I didn't know any better. My immediate coworkers (it was a software firm but I worked in admin) were not very friendly, and certainly not professional (that's putting things nicely). Anyway, I won't go on about it, but I definitely think you're making the right choice. Run away quick!

I have no doubt in my mind that this job is not right for me. The people who work there are very fake and there was some tenstion among them. The job duties were not what I was told (I found out today I am expected to wash everyone's coffee cups, lunch dishes, silverware etc...) I have nothing against washing dishes, but I'm a paralegal, not a dishwasher and that was never discussed during the interview. The lady who has the position now has a very complicated system (she does not use her computer desk top, so every file I would need to access is burried in sub files that even she does not know how to get to easily. They even file things in a way that makes no sense. The file everything BEHIND the tab instead of in front of it. I know that's a minor thing, but it's just an example of how this place does things.

How is it strange? This has happened to me before (where the work environment feels kind of "off"), and I've stayed around to see if maybe it's just me (first day jitters, that kind of thing). I think only one time it was just that I was new and not used to things yet, the rest of the time it really was a weird place, and I ended up quitting. If you think this is the case, you're probably making the right decision getting out early while you can still possibly go back to your old job if you wanted.

I have been offered the job. I have decided to accept it. I'm going in to my old job tomorrow to talk to my boss. One of the duties I perform is reconciling Conveyancing Accounts (which are checking accounts used in escrow situations). It's a little more detailed than just balancing a regular checking account, and I'm the only person at the law firm who knows how to do it. I am going to offer to continue to do this function, for as long as they would like. I've tried training other people in the office how to do it, but no one really followed thru with it. I will be working four 5 hour days a week at my new job. It would probably take me 5 hours a month to balance the 3 conveyancing accounts, so I could definitely handle both jobs.

I will actually be going into the new job for a few hours this week to train with the woman who is leaving. She will only be at this office for 1 more week. And this is the last week of summer vacation for the kids--so needless to say--it's going to be a hectic week!
