I recommend Max Studio dresses. They are a substantial knit and come in several different styles ( I love the wraps). They are available for $40-$50 at Filenes, TJMaxx, Marshalls or a BCBG outlet. I also like Target's Merona dresses. These are a thinner material, but a bargain at $25. I have been hanging mine to dry and they have worn like iron.

Check out Boden as well...I just got their fall catalog in the mail, and I was surprised at how many good looking jersey dresses they have in there.

i'm so frugal, this is the best price so far (teal looks ok, not sure about the ruby red for my skin tone):

http://www.overstock.com/Cloth.....oduct.html?

mai: thanks for the tar-jay link! i shop there unabashed (as well as ross, goodwill and a consignment modern/vintage chain called crossroads), and have found dresses/skirts that continue to receive compliments more than my BR and other department store finds, 2 years on!

after indulging in a 'i have no money to buy lots of expensive pretty things' party, i decided to become a frugal fashionista zealot. luckily i've been quite successful, and discovered that one can look classy with an awareness of fabric, body type, drape, cut and color. it takes patience, time and meticulous pickiness however, lol...

i read/view everyone's posts for ideas, all of which continue to help immensely-- kudos to all!

anne: i am AA, and am slowly starting to accept my petite bits. however, i've considered 'having an accident' just for the mammary expansion that comes with the package hope your little baby is doing well (all soft and squishy, hooray!)

Okay, you're going to laugh at this one, but Target is selling a bunch of jersey dresses this summer through its Isaac Mizrahi line, in the $20-$30 range. They're not super sophisticated, but they're simple, flattering to most body types, and budget friendly - worth taking a look at your local outlet, at least! I got one of their dresses earlier this summer (no longer online, sadly) in navy and have gotten a lot of compliments on it.

Hi Cyan, I am watching this thread closely as I am also 5' 4", rather flatchested normally (I have a baby so currently nearly fill a B cup! Hooray!) and pear shape but with defined shoulders. I loved your the dress in your initial post and Inge, particularly enjoyed those Shabby Apple ones.

thanks for your responses!

dani: i believe i am an (albeit flat chested!) hourglass with pear lower body tendencies. i just found a camera that works, and will post!

i am 5'4" and tend to look best with at-the-knee hems, though above the knee is ok too (although i feel a little self conscious).

my skin tone tends to suit muted brights and deep, jewel tones. white and black also tend to look good.

inge: thank you so much!!! yes, cami's totally work. i like ones with a little lace, and are more horizontal than v-neck in shape. again, for obvious reasons

Hi, Cyan...what's your body type? That will be helpful in allowing people to make suggestions. Also, what length would you like to have, above the knee, below the knee, at knee level...that will also depend on your height. What colors do you prefer?

hi all,

i'm trying to expand my dress collection, and am looking for low-maintenance, work-appropriate jersey dresses (i am on the move a lot, and can't be bothered with wrinkles!) the drape and material flatter my body (and iron laziness) best. a few requirements:

1) cap or 3/4 sleeve
2) neckline not too far below collarbone (i have a very small bust and hence, not much cleavage to fill it out!)
3) waist-defining
4) less than $100

i found this dress from another fashion advice blog, and liked it.

http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/30.....rchresults

prints/solids are fine, whatever you can come with would be much appreciated!

many thanks...
