Core warmth is key for me - that and keeping my head warm. A number of us keep some kind of light quilted vest at work for this very reason. I don't think down fill weight or anything like that matters unless you are using it as true gear. Mine is from Old Navy!

It doesn't get that cold where I live but I run cold. I was wearing my puffer vest under my pleather jacket with a merino....that kept me warm enough in winter. I get a cold back in winter.

Thanks everyone for your very specific answers. There are a range of answers here. I have a lot to think about.
I think if I find one I like at a price I like, I'll get it.Or at least try it on. And now I have an additional type to think about-faux fur or plush. I can't imagine the faux fur, but will try it on if I see one in my size. Plush seems more likely.
I wish I had had a down one to wear when I watched my kids play outdoor sports. Burrr.
But, it actually doesn't get that cold here. Not like where a lot of you live.

I agree with what Jenn said. You do need to consider what a "warm vest" is to you and to your climate. Stylish long sweater vests and gillets are probably not all that warm compared to a down puffer-type vest or fleece vest which can be an outdoor garment in a cold climate when layered properly.

For me, and I run a bit cold, I would not expect much additional warmth from a long flowing sweater vest or gillet worn over some other top, so I wouldn't think I'd get overheated in it. I know I WOULD get additional warmth from a down vest.

I have quite a few fleece and down vests for when we're birding, hiking, etc. They're great when it's chilly. The drawback is you can't tie them around your waist when you warm up!

I like sweater vests for layering under jackets or blazers that are too slim through the arms for sweaters.

I like down vests for backpacking, and traveling to places where the temperature fluctuates a lot.

Every other version of vest I've encountered is more form than function.

I wear my vests indoors in winter over sweaters for extra warmth and outdoors as gear when I snowshoe, or cross country ski. They are also great for transitional weather, and cold a/c.

In my experience, you wear a gilet when it's warm - not cold. And vests - much shorter than gilets - are nothing but decoration for always cold me. Like a necklace.

I run cold but I do find my down vest very useful. I wear it over my fleece sweater in the fall and under my down coat in the winter. I need that extra layer.

My answer is no - altho I wore one when I was a grocery cashier standing in front of the refrigerators for ease of movement. But not even a puffy vest will keep me warm outside. I run very cold.

Probably person and climate specific to a degree. You might want to experiment with a less expensive item first to get a sense of it.

Gilets and vests are not super practical in my climate except in the transitional seasons. But I'm soon moving to a climate where they are more practical.

I do think they can work brilliantly indoors for many.

The other place they truly come into their own is in active outdoor pursuits. It's so great to have your arms free of restrictions if you want to swing them as you move. So they're fantastic for hiking, skating, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and the like -- or even just for brisk walks. You do have to layer of course. But a warm sweater or windprotecting garment or leather jacket or fleece or even blazer with a puffer vest is a lot warmer than you might think. You can also layer that type of puffer under a trench for added warmth.

I agree with Jenn. It's similar to the way that adding a scarf will will warm you up all over.

My experience has been that warming your core is actually surprisingly effective at keeping your arms warmer. My husband was a skeptic until I bought him one a few years, and he was amazed at how effective it could be.

Jen's post, and the gilet, and some other long vests, have me considering a vest for the first time.

I am very temperature sensitive, and my extremities are always colder than my core. For this reason I have never understood warm vests. At least for me.

Does wearing a warm vest like this cause your entire body to warm up or will it make my core overheat while my arms are too cold? What do you think/what is your experience?
