Thanks everyone for your comments. They have made me feel so much better and also that my irritation at my friend is justified. I tried to brush off his comments but ended up getting angry with him and pointing out his hypocrisy and how hurtful his comments were. His reaction was the ever-classic 'ah sure, I'm only joking'. If you ever want to annoy me, just say something insulting or bigoted, and then brush off my protests with 'I'm only joking'.

I know deep down rationally that an extra couple of pounds doesn't make me unattractive and that I have an hourglass shape which will always look curvy at any weight. In fact, when I look at my mum and sisters that we all are hourglasses and none of us have the stick thin genes. However for the sake of my health (my mum is diabetic), I do have to take care of my health and putting on weight because of stress and laziness isn't an option if I want to not be diabetic at the age of 40. My doctor has told me repeatedly that if I can stay fit, healthy and active in my 20s that it will pay off later on in life.

I also rationally know that pants have always been my fit issue. It took me a full year to finally find skinny jeans which fit me, and I know that it probably will take me as long to find slacks which fit me. I was hoping to find suitable slacks for work as sometimes it would be easier to wear trousers to work instead of skirts. I may end up buying a pair of pants and taking them to the tailor.

I have had to buy some UK size 10s in the past while as I just want a slightly more modest cut for some of my pencil skirts in work as up to this point I have preferred them to be quite fitted. I work part-time as a receptionist in student accommodation and need to look older and more responsible than the students so that has been a style challenge recently.

It's weird, isn't it, when you get upset about something that you know logically shouldn't bother you.

You poor poppet! I have also been on the receiving end of "you look pregnant" remarks and it really hurts.

I can say with certainty that any friends who would have overheard this comment would not have looked at you and thought "oh yeah, I never noticed - she does". They would have looked at this guy and thought "What a rude <enter word of your choice!> - what absolute rubbish!" (In fact, I'd be even thinking "sock it to him Dawn!")

I have only been on the YLF forum for a couple of months. Dawn, I love looking at your photos - your style is exactly the way I'd love to dress! As such, I have not seen photos of you when you were 'slimmer' - only as you are now. Sweety, you have a lovely, healthy, petite figure - there is NO WAY you look pregnant or even slightly chubby. Please do not let one obviously physically and socially unhealthy person (and one shopping trip which didn't quite turn out the way you would have liked) make you feel bad about your lovely body. That's an order! x

Dawn, I haven't even read anyone else's reply, but I had to post right away. My blood pressure is rising the more I think about this "friend" of yours. Such comments are absolutely inappropriate to anyone, any time, any place, even if there was no blatant hipocracy involved. I'm so terribly sorry you were exposed to such hurtful and absurd remarks. *hugs*

As for the pain of pant shopping, I absolutely sympathize and know how demoralizing it can be, but I feel certain the negative experience was compounded by this dude's comments last week. Please try not to let it get to you too much. H&M's cuts could be contributing to the problem. If you truly feel it's you, focus on the fact that you know what steps to take and have a plan in place to make sure they happen. That, ultimately, will have more impact on your confidence than a few frustrating hours in a change room (even though it probably doesn't feel that way right now).

Hang in there and don't let these incidents grind you down!

I hate it when people are rude and say hurtful things. I think they do it to make themselves feel better or because they are jealous. Don't let someone else lower your confidence and don't worry about the pants. We all have bad shopping days.

Boo on your "friend." That's just rude. It seems as though he has not mastered the art of social conversation!

As far as trouser shopping goes, I totally sympathize. Some seasons, I can't find anything to fit. Other times, everything seems to fit ok. Very annoying and demoralizing.

Dawn, I peek in on your blog occasionally and wouldn't have guessed that you have gained weight! You have a lovely figure and you know how to dress it.

Dawn, I am aghast that anyone would make those comments to you or anyone else. This person was obviously born without an internal censor. I'm sure you handled it like a lady, which is more than I could say for myself if I were in the same situation.

Honestly, you look perfect to me. Please don't let some insensitive idiot let you think otherwise.

I assume a UK 8 is a 34 and a UK 10 is a 36 right? I have been a 36 for quite some time and I weigh about what you did when you were borderline unhealthy and skipping meals, and I am about your height. So that tells me you are smaller than I am, since you say the 10's were falling off. I'd be happy to be you But, it sounds like you would be happier with just a 5 pound weight loss. That is probably all it would take to comfortably wear a 34 again. For now stick to dresses and skirts and by the time fall comes around again, I'm sure you'll be back to normal anyway. You look gorgeous in dresses and skirts so it should not be a problem!

Dawn, you have a beautiful and enviable hour glass shape. Don't hour glasses always have fit problems with the waist? Tailors are one of a gals best friends. : )
Do you need to buy pants right now since the weather is warming up? Rock those skirts and dresses and do a bit of strategic accessory placement: belt a little higher than usual, long lighter weight scarfs, belt inside a cardigan or jacket/blazer, etc.
I'm horrified about your friend's comments. Ugh! Insensitive guys! OK, right now we are doing a collective YLF kung-fu kick up his keister!! (Oh, and don't forget to put on your pointy toe shoes, ladies!) Ready? 1..2...3... KAPOWIE!! Oh wow! I think we've kicked him to the moon!!
Only a few more weeks until you get your masters! What a major goal!!! Our emotions are intensified when we are under a lot of stress. Hang in there! A big hug to you, lovely Dawn!

Dawn, try and brush it off. So you look extra hourglass-y at the moment. Wonderful! People would love to have your curves, AND your sense of style. It's as simple as that.

I say give pants a miss. Stick to skirts and dresses. They are easy to fit and make you feel great. Voila!

Dawn, I'm so sorry about that jerk! One of my closest friends told me after someone mad disparaging remarks about my weight, "That comment says more about him than your weight." Please take care of your self--get plenty of healthy food, water and rest! And congrats on your degree, what an accomplishment! You will be back to your normal size in no time. I understand the frustration of being between sizes. That just means that you should try a different brand or store. Currently, I'm between sizes of Gap jeans which I really like.

Dawn, I think you look pretty darn hot right now, just as you are!

But I do sympathize completely, as I also gained a bit of weight, which went mostly to belly and upper back, making me annoyingly between sizes. I actually don't think I look bad at the higher weight at all - just like you don't. It's just such a challenge finding clothes at that weight. I either needed to lose it, or gain enough to fill out the larger size properly.

I have lost most of it again but while losing I can't tell you how important it was to my self esteem to find flattering clothes that actually fit, and weren't tight!!!! There's nothing worse than wearing tight clothes that don't flatter. The problem, dear Dawn, is not your weight, it's your pants!! Please, please, keep telling yourself that.

It is difficult, but keep up the search. I notice you have been wearing dresses a lot lately - excellent strategy! It sounds like pants are your tricky fit problem, which is same for me. I lived this fall and winter in ponte knit pants because they have stretch. Just two pairs that I rotated, along with skinny jeans that have a lot of stretch. As a plus, it also taught me I can get away with less clothes than I thought!

If necessary get to a tailor. The expense is worth your self esteem.

You will be in a better space in no time. I bet this is a very stressful time and that can't help since it can magnify the bad feelings we have. You've got a handle on what things you need to do to get to your goals and that will move you forward

You are almost there when it comes to your masters. This is a huge and wonderful accomplishment. Great job.

In the past year, I have put on around 10lbs from cutting back on my intensive exercise, stress, eating good food and some level of laziness. In the past two weeks, I've spent way too much time focusing on how miserable this has made me feel and worse of all, how some people are using it to make me feel like crap.

At the start of 2009, I weighed around 8 stone and fluctuated in a range of 6lbs. For my height, this was on the line between underweight and healthy. I probably wasn't eating very well then, often skipping meals to study, eating unhealthy food instead and not eating breakfast. Since then I moved in with Alan who has encouraged me to do much more cooking for myself and my eating habits have became much more centred around 3 healthy meals everyday with some snacks. I also have very little time to exercise lately and have found myself eating junk food from stress. I know that all of this will change in a few weeks time when I finish my masters so at least it can be dealt with then.

However I have developed some more curves than I used to have and have put some weight onto my stomach and hip- not much but enough to make my normal size a bit tight. I know what I need to do to lose the weight but two things happened in the past two weeks that made me feel so miserable about my weight.

One of my friends told me that I look pregnant in front of a group of my friends. We were at a bbq and when I went back for a second serving, he started making more comments about my weight. The worst thing is that he's not exactly the thinnest of people and he also packed on a pile of weight during his masters programme so he should understand what is going on. It was just so upsetting to have someone point out your weight gain, especially when you hope that noone would notice a slight weight gain.

I also went pant shopping today and nearly broke down in H&M from frustration- UK size 8 fitted everywhere else but gave me major muffin top and the size 10 was falling off my hips. Every single pair of pants which I tried on today didn't fit and it was such a horrible experience.

The worst thing is that normally I have such high body confidence and a couple of horrible comments and shopping for trousers is making me feel so unattractive. Ugh...
