The last suggestion sounds the best LOL. I have no belly to speak of but I still have a muffin top !!! I think that is what causes the problem for me. I have to keep my waistbands on the loose side to prevent splitting the offender in half. Oh well, what can we do...

This is interesting. I think Elisabeth is on to something. Scarlet, Taylor and Angie don't have this problem and they all three look like they have very flat abs. Another one like this is Marley. Marley, where are you?

Thank you very much for your solutions. I'll summarize:

-go for more rigid fabrications (less stretch).
-cannot go beltless any more. I admit, I forget to put one on. They are essential for most of us.
-lose weight. (Tricky because if I start losing too much weight, I start looking 5 years older.)
-go for higher rise pants or very low rise pants. I have the least slippage with very high and very low rise, because they fit exactly around my waist or low hip (the belly hangs over those puppies)
- get waistbands taken in
- select jeans with curved waist bands.
- try Levis Curve ID for curvy girls.
- liposuction around my midsection. (Solves the facial aging issue.) (JK)

I really don't have this problem at all and was very surprised the first time I heard someone did. Now I am surprised it is so widespread apparently. To Elisabeth's point I never had to worry about muffin top, so perhaps she is onto something. The dealbreaker in jean sizing is my hip bones. I size just large enough to zip comfortably.

It is NOT your shape, it the fabrication of the pants! I think Elisabeth's spot on --- ANY padding in the midriff at all (and not just us apple gals, because I remember when I was a teenaged hourglass, it was still an issue) and your jeans *will* slide if (a) they are not high-waisted and *tight* enough to squeeze or (b) they have stretch (which seems more and more the default). And of course you can't get 'tight enough to squeeze' with mid- or low-rise anyway, because your hipbones will be in the way!

By the way, this continues to be a problem even with altered waistbands for me, thank you! And I have a lot of butt and belly and thigh and calf to prevent it puddling at my ankles, but crouching and sitting on the floor etc are still likely to give you an eyeful unless I'm wearing a longer top. Yes, I know --- TMI! BUT now you know why I do NOT tuck with jeans.

Oh, and get this --- this isn't just my jeans, it happens to my casual pants too...MOST OF WHICH ARE CUT LIKE JEANS! Khaki skinnies, wideleg chinos, cargos --- unless the waistband is *really* snug and the fabric entirely stretch-free, it WILL slide on me!

Taylor, I've had jeans altered to fit perfectly and they still slide a bit -- albeit less than they did before I got them altered. I have narrow hips and not a lot of rear end, which I'm sure contributes to the problem, but it sounds like even pear shaped women get jean downslide to some degree too.

Perhaps if I wore really high-waisted jeans with no stretch in them, and room through the hips and thighs, then they'd stay put better....but that pretty much describes "mom jeans", so no thanks!

This was one of the first questions I ever asked the forum. I have the same problem -- always have, and probably always will. I think it's partly my shape, but it seems that a bit of sliding is not uncommon.

This is what I think is going on. Most women have some flesh around their midsections. Even a small amount of flesh will result in muffin top if the pants are too tight. Ergo, the pants can't be too tight; they must be *just* tight enough. But, most jeans contain some percentage of stretch fibers, and that causes a bit of fabric flex and inevitable downslide.

This problem has been bugging me for years. I've asked all my friends, and the only ones who do not have the problem of denim jean slide are the ones who have VERY lean, flat bellies. (Angie fits this description, as it happens). It doesn't seem to matter whether their hips and thighs are lean or fleshy; it's the midriff that counts. A woman with no extra flesh on her midriff can wear her jeans waistband as tight as it needs to be to prevent downslide *without* causing flesh spillage. I've also noticed that my eight-year-old daughter, who, like many prepubescent girls, has zero fat around her middle, does not have the problem of jean downslide either.

Anyway, that's my best guess as far as explaining why jean downslide happens. As for solving it, there is lots of good advice here. For me personally, the things that help the most are:

a) get the waist and seat taken in so the jeans fit as perfectly as possible
b) wear a thin, flat belt (I hear invisibelts are good, although I don't have one)
c) don't get jeans with too much stretch in them (my jeggings, while very comfortable, do require a belt to make up for the stretchiness).

Ironkurtin: when I have the waist and seat of the jeans taken in, they do it by opening up the back seam, removing some fabric, and sewing it back together. There ends up being a seam all the way through the waistband but it is concealed by the back belt loop.

Okay. Why am I NOT hitching? I have some of my jeans adjusted at the waist band so that they stay put and fit perfectly. Some are low rise, others are mid rise and high rise. Things do not move around at all - no belt.

I'm puzzled unless you need to have the waistband altered.

I've done it myself - but believe me, it's not a completely perfect sight (inside out)! Still works, though. I just handsew a one-inch chunk of my waistband (measured on each side), slightly on an angle inward - and voila. A tailor can do this if you're not happy to do it as an amateur!

At Christmas a friend of mine got me the "hip hugger" half-belt from the people who brought you Hollywood Fashion Tape, and it's great for cinching in a too-big waistband. It has clips that attach to the side belt loops, then you slide it through the back center belt loop. You might want to give it a try, too!

Me too! This happens to me all the time! What's worse is I'm usually wearing jeans for MOTG and I keep flashing people with my underwear when I'm bending or crouching to play with the kids. And I'm not wearing low rise jeans either. I don't understand the laws of jeans physics that make them simultaneously too tight around my apple waist and so loose they're falling down.

Same frustrating issue here, CocoLion, EVEN WITH A BELT! - until recently! As other ladies have mentioned, taking the waistband of my jeans/jeggings in an inch (or more) REALLY helped stop the slippage. The waist-hip ratio may not have been contoured perfectly enough on our jeans - or if they're a low-cut, may have even been nonexistent - so hoisting had become embarassingly necessary.

After I took in the waistband of each pair, it was SUCH a pleasure to wear my jeans worry-free, all day! Not one hoisting incident since. Hope it works for you!

Same problem here- I thought it was just me!
I have a flat butt, and not much of a waist, and I can take off every single pair of my jeans without unfastening them! :-O
They all slide down and drive me crazy!
It doesn't matter if they're tight, loose, or in between.

Higher waisted ones are better, but still not perfect. I also bought one of those invisabelts from Amazon, thinking that it would be a smoother line than a regular belt, but I'm not too convinced that it's better.

My new Banana Republic trouser jeans are about the only ones that seem to stay in place.

And I thought it was just me! I have a very flat rear and minimal rectangle hips so it seemed this was the cause. If it happens on different body types, it is obviously the jeans makers.

I wore trouser jeans yesterday as a break from Levis/skinnies and did not have that problem but mine are truly cut with a waistband like a dress pant. They were so comfortable all day.

I am looking into that Isabelt. My current solution is not the best but being on Team Untucked, I use a very thin, cheap belt that must have come off some slacks at some point. It does not have a heavy/decent buckle so it does not add any bulk.

Suz I am surprised jeans are tight in the legs on you, too, as to me your thighs look really slim. OK it must be the style. Because I KNOW I have slim calves (12.5" one leg 12.75" the other) which means tall boots are consistently too big but skinny jeans are tight there.

I predict a looser, straight yet tapered leg look coming back. The denim oracle has spoken!

It's not YOU. It's the pants!!

Seriously, this is my big issue with jeans, too. My AT Modern fit skinnies are worst, especially when tucked into boots (the boots just pull them down!) and it is partly cut and partly the spandex.

Like you, I find that skinnies and even straight legs are tight in the thighs (and for me, also the calves). Combine that with the low rise and there you go.

I got a pair of DL1961 skinnies that have a higher rise and those ones seem to stay put on me. I can find the style number if you like; we're about the same size so they might also work for you.

I haven't tried an isabelt yet. Time to look that up - thanks!

Major pear here (and I carry my weight at my high hip), and it happens to me too even with things that fit perfectly. (Now admittedly they don't slide very far on me, but they do slide down a little). I think the biggest offender in my case is sitting down/getting back up, because when one sits down, things naturally have to rearrange themselves, and they don't go back to where they were when one stands up.

Janet, as I've aged my weight has shifted down from my rear to my low hips and thighs so I suspect this is part of the problem. In general, I find jeans to be too tight in the thighs and too loose in the hips and the back of the waistband (not the front). This is also a style right now, super tight legs. I have one pair of True Religion straights with a curved waistband and looser thighs and they slide the least.

IK/Alaska, Bagaline and Mod, I oddly feel better knowing that this happens to everyone.

Anna -- I have one pair of J Brands and the tight thigh/loose waist is such a big problem that I can't wear them at all. But maybe I shouldn't judge from one pair.

Meredith, I don't have an Isabelt but I do have an Invisibelt which I find awful, I hate the plastic smell and adjusting it is very inconvenient. I'll check the Isabelt.

Shopping and kirti -- I've never had the waistband tailored, maybe I should try.

It is a mystery to me that a girl with an hourglass figure could have this problem.

Like you, I suffer from that plague, but I always thought that the problem was due to my shape, a very round apple. With no hips, no waist and no bum, I thought "No wonder my jeans are sliding down, I've nothing to "anchor" them". To avoid my jeans ending on the footpath, I have to wear my belt so tight I'm red in the face!

I have also noticed that this problem doesn't occur when I wear ordinary or dressy trousers. Which means that the origin of the sliding could be in the cut, I mean something different in the way jeans are cut compared to trousers. But what is different ? How to modify/alter the jeans so they stay up? Like you Coco, I hope someone has a suggestion.
