I'm not at all a blue jeans girl nowadays (have mostly whites and blacks, only ) -and just reading about what a hassle is to find the right one's (which I also experienced, of course) it keeps me away of even thinking to start intorducing them back in my wardrobe ever again:-((((. Not of help I know.

Ahhh… with Barbara Diane. Own one pair, the white pair from late 2021.
3 other pairs from earlier became too large and were edited out. Sadly the lovely white ones are now also a bit large. As now partway through summer I would not try to replace if I feel they are too big. Jeans not really my thing.
Clearly they are your thing though Carla!

I have 2 from H&M jeans, a high rise mums jeans and a black straight leg jeans which I wear 2/3 times a week. Plus the denim shirt which I tend to wear once a week.

I am sticking with H&M for now whilst I am working towards a healthy BMI and I know that those jeans will be loose within the year. It would be an expensive cpw if I'd buy better quality but more expensive pieces this year.

The challenge is that I don't know when I should replace them. I reached the point where belts are a must otherwise the start to slip down and can easily put 2/3 hands inside them. Should I wait a little bit longer or replace now?

Wow, I love seeing everyone's collections. I am in the crew here who have large denim collections. I wear jeans most days for three seasons, and even in our hot summers I wear denim shorts often. Only a few examples are in my Finds, sorry.

I keep jeans a long time, (some are 10 or 12 years old now) and get some of them 2nd hand, too. The only reason I get rid of jeans is for drastic weight or style change. I love low-rise, but had to let go of mine years ago when they just didn't work on my body anymore. I'm hanging onto my skinnies right now, though!

Although I have more classic straight-leg styles than anything, my favorite shapes are full length flares or bootcuts for dressy and boyfriend jeans or cropped kick-flares for everyday. My favorite jeans for travel are my balloon jeans.

My fave brands are Levis, AG, Loft, WHBM. As far as something new for future, I am eyeing deep-cuffed relaxed straights with interest...

Wide leg full length jeans would be a great addition for you, I bet, Carla.

Very illuminating! I wear jeans almost every day in for at least half the year, and then often denim long shorts during the hotter months. I can't recall a single in person job I have ever had where I couldn't wear jeans - non-profit in Manhattan, and hi-tech/non-profit/thrift store in Israel all are jeans friendly. [Cultural side note: jeans are also normal at funerals and weddings in Israel.] So I have lots, but lately am mainly leaning into my boyfriends. COH is probably my favorite right now.

I wear jeans maybe 30-40% of the time/2 to 3 days a week. The other days I'm in casual pants or dresses. I have two pairs. One is a wide leg and the other is straight. I don't think the stock photos do their shapes justice, so I'll some photos of me wearing them, too.

As of right now, my wide legs (bought in April 2021) have 205 wears. The straight legs (bought in October 2022) have 20 wears. There are pretty much always two pairs in my wardrobe--the straight legs replaced a procession of retired skinnies.

For the first time in perhaps EVER, both my pairs of jeans are the same brand. I'm really happy to have found a sustainable denim brand that fits me well in Warp & Weft.

Lisa, I think because you have to wear a uniform for work you wouldn't get as much opportunity as some to wear denim. (Except maybe black denim? Not sure it's allowed...)

Because I largely work from home and work in a creative field, I can wear them all the time, and do -- they're my at home wear, my going out to meet friends wear, my running errands wear, etc.

Like Angie, I also wear dressier pants a lot in winter. But my jeans still get a ton of use. I'm currently counting wears -- started December 1 -- and since that date I have worn jeans 35 times, splitting wears between the styles below. That's a little over half the available days.

In my current climate, cropped or full length jeans are a staple for about 9 months of the year and I wear them occasionally in the high summer. I do wear denim shorts in high summer as well.

I am one of people with large denim collection that can't wear them to work. Since I am a huge fan, I wear them pretty much everywhere else: out running errands styled casually, meeting for dinner/drinks with friends styled smart casually, etc. I wear them the most in the spring and the fall, a little less in the winter, and less than that in the summer - then I tend to wear them more in the evening.

Like Janet, I tend to keep them for a long time and some styles go into hibernation only to be revived later. A good portion (but not complete) of my denim collection is below. The three dominant brands are Mother, Frame and Veronica Beard, but there are bunch of pairs that are singles from a certain brand. On the low end, there is pair from Nili Lotan for Target collection, and on the opposite side, a single designer pair by Alexander McQueen ( that I got at about 75% off).

For this year, I am looking for a full length wide white pair and (maybe) a light wash full length pair that is either wide or flare,

Jeans are very important to my style, with the caveat that summers here are too hot and humid for denim, so from about June-August, I put aside jeans in favor of lighter fabrications and shorter styles, or wear skirts or dresses instead. But for the other three seasons, I wear jeans probably 85% of the time. Lately I’m enjoying changing things up with other casual pants like cargos and parachute pants while they are trending, but jeans will remain a huge staple in my wardrobe.

I have many pairs. Some are not being worn currently — the slim straights now feel a bit too much like skinnies for my preferences now, and I’m really enjoying the wide leg and boyfriend styles. My jeans last a long time because I rotate wear so widely along the collection, and that’s fine by me, because when I find pants I like, I generally keep them a long time, barring damage or fit issues.

My current favorite brands seem to be AG, Pilcro/Anthro, COH, 7FAMK, and I have some others from DL1961, Mother, Nili Lotan, Old Navy, and Lucky Brand, so clearly my collection spans all price ranges! The finds below are not a total accounting of my jeans capsule but they give a decent picture.

I’m not in the market for any new jeans at the moment but it’s fun to look at the new styles. I would think that with your reliance on denim, you could use a more robust collection!

I’ve always had a couple of pairs of jeans while working, but since retiring, I went a little crazy:

Levis 90s dad jeans, grey

Levis 314 shaping straight jean, dark wash

Levis Strauss x2( Walmart brand) slim straight, light and dark wash- these are kicking around the house jeans

ON kicker boot cut, medium wash

Lois straight, black x2

Vince Camuto straight denim, medium wash

ON loose jeans, light wash

Liz Claiborne Jackie, girlfriend, dark wash

Lucky Brand slim straight, dark wash

Point Zero trouser jeans, black

Calvin Klein short crops x2, light and dark wash

Yikes! When I see the numbers, but this is what I wear 90% of the time now. The dark washes and black jeans are for when I want to look a little more dressed up. Also, I keep my jeans for years, and rarely wear them out, likely because I have so many on rotation and they are not really worn during the hot summer months either.

My Vince Camuto straight, ON boot cut, Lucky brand slim straight, and Lois straight black are my favourites to wear. I’m all set for 2023.

I would guess that, except in summer, I wear jeans about 60% of the time. This is easier since I can wear them for work as well. I try to update the style to keep up with the most mainstream trends every couple of years.

However, finding jeans that fit my weird body type is a challenge, as I'm very narrow in the hips, thighs & butt, but have a wide waist. As well, my inseam is about 26".

So when I find something that fits, I tend to buy them in every wash available! For the last couple of years, that's been Old Navy. I've tried on jeans at various price points, but so far, Old Navy is it. Especially because they offer Petite sizes, which seems unusual...?
I'd love to hear if anyone knows of good Petite jeans (available in Canada).

Jeans are an essential part of my wardrobe. I wear them for every occasion except dressy (weddings, funerals, etc.). I wore them to work on Fridays over ten years ago.
I don't wear jeans when walking my dog on cold days, but then I am not making a fashion statement. I didn't wear jeans in the summer, but this past year I found my barrel jeans worked for hot weather. I expect my wide-legged jeans will be okay too.

The jeans that fit me the best are Citizens of Humanity. They are pricey, but they tick all the boxes.

I don't have a large jean capsule, but it works for me. I don't have any plans to add more this year.

Up until I branched out to skinnies( around 2014) I exclusively wore mens Levi's 505s. I even hacked some to fit more like a skinny. I wear jeans every day.(I can wear them at work). If I am not in jeans I am in a denim shirt with leggings!
My current brands continue to be Levi but I like Eddie Bauer boyfriend , Jag and Kut from the cloth.
However Kut jeans seem to really vary in their fiber content. I have 3 denim dresses of various lengths, 2 denim skirts, 6 denim shirts of various styles, 4 jean jackets, a vintage denim duster and a flannel lined denim car coat. I like denim!

In eight months I have worn my jeans 62 times - less than I expected considering there are about 240 days in that period - so about one quarter of the time - I expect that over one year to trend up a little - for me the three summer months see very little denim wearing but the balance of the year I wear it regularly

Denim shorts have been worn 12 times - my shirt 9 times and my denim jacket 18 times

I wear two of my three pairs of jeans to work - the other pair are more relaxed and casual - I wear the shirt and the jacket to work too but not the shorts

All my jeans are blue - I expect to purchase a new pair this year but am yet to decide which colour and silhouette to go for- considering black bootcuts or maybe sailor style denim- I don't see my denim collection as trendy - more of a classic component - in fact when skinnies were everywhere I was possibly a bit out of sync - I did own a couple of pairs but they were always hard for me to style

My collection is featured below although my wash on the G Star jeans is quite different

(new laptop in progress - with all the keys represented including a comma question mark and full stop!)

Carla - that's an amazing amount of denim wear and I can see how important jeans are to your looks

This is an interesting thread, and while we’ve discussed jeans many times here on the forum there are always new thoughts expressed . Kkards ‘ comment about those jeans that need footwear to complete them really hit home . It’s the reason why I always default to an old pair of BF’s on weekends around the house. And then slap on some boots and a coat and they still look fine for quick errands . I like trendy jeans but they don’t get worn ! Longer wide legs are awkward to wear at home.

I’m always curious where those of you with extensive denim collections wear them . I fear everyone has a much more robust social life than I do !

So all of this is to say I love the idea of jeans but find them the most difficult to shop for . I probably have 12 pair spilt evenly between black and blue with a cpl of cream coloured pair in my collection too . Like a few others have already said , your collection seems small relative to their function in your wardrobe and lifestyle . I love your new Levi’s crops and look forward to seeing what you purchase next !

Jeans every day for at least 7 months of the year for me. In the last year I’ve retired several pairs of skinny jeans and replaced with wide legs, wider crops, cargo style, straights and what I would call modified balloon. I feel my jeans collection is really good and working well right now.

No more dress pants even for church, except for cold weather funerals. Even days when I wear running or athletic clothes, at some point I wear jeans.

I’m particular about the color of blue, and like a true denim, darker, lightly faded, or washed. No rips or distressing, super pale blues, sky blue or blue blue (hard to describe), overdyes, dirty brown tones. I have one black pair. Three pair from Old Navy which I can’t find pictures for any more, though they aren’t that old. One is wide leg with a full length, frayed hem (love! Makes me feel like a teenager!), one very similar but with a regular hem, and one more cropped-wide leg, which I feel are a bit too short for colder weather.

Carla, CLEARLY denim bottoms are an important wardrobe essential for you. And YES - make sure they are dead right and have the personality you want them to!

To answer your question: I LOVE BLUE AND WHITE DENIM CLOTHING! It's a constant in my style life. It's a very handy styling tool for my style. Good for my climate too. Yes, I have a few go-to brands.

That said, I wear dressy and smart casual pants a LOT too - they are even more comfy! I wear these bottoms AS MUCH as jeans. I don't wear Athleisure, so I'm either in jeans or dressier pants most of the time. Skirts and dresses when the weather warms up, of course! (On outdoorsy trails, walks and hikes in the woods, by the beach or mountains with the doggies - I wear demoted jeans).

You saw my denim collection on the blog post, so I'm posting my pants capsule here:

I like jeans and wear them a lot but mostly on my days off. Work dress code is suppose to be dressy with jacket and it works for me up to the point ( my shoes are always comfort sneakers and that brings more casual feeling to the look ). Currently I wear two or three of my fav jeans ( low rise flare and straight from Lucky Brand ) with the rest is in the holding zone. The new wide leg jeans will need to be adopted to the everyday life .
In general I need to do spring edit and decide what I need to replace except for the white jeans - those are hard and may need to wait another year.

My daily uniform -- for work and not-work -- is jeans and a patterned shirt, usually a button-front collared shirt. So, I wear jeans a lot -- probably 330 days a year or so?

I used to have a much larger denim capsule but I gained some weight and haven't replaced the ones that don't fit anymore, which does mean I have to really on top of my laundry or I run out of jeans.

I am slow to adopt trends in general, but I did finally add a pair of high rise jeans within the past year, and I like them a lot.

More than half my jeans are from Warp + Weft, which produces on-trend jeans alongside classic cuts. Their jeans fit me very well in general, which is nice because if I want to try a trend, I can reliably find a version of it that will fit as well as can be expected for ready-to-wear.

Nodding along with LaPed - jeans are my go-to until the cold weather hits.

I wear jeans in summer, too and only recently added a pair of denim shorts into the summer mix.

My most-worn pair are full length straight leg secondhand 501 Levi’s. I have a pair of boyfriend and wide leg jeans from Uniqlo and wide leg “tall” jeans from Madewell that are also in heavy rotation. I’ve duped the Madewell and the Uniqlo jeans so I always have a spare pair. I plan to pick up a backup of the Levi’s at some point, as the knees are beginning to thin after 82 wears.

My favorite dressy pair of denim is from Frame. And I admit I rarely wear them because I love them so much.

"Runcarla, one thing that this Jan challenge was reinforced for me, and which i offer up just as something to think about, is that for at home days, jeans that rely on footwear to complete them, or that have an ultra high waist don't get worn. I'm actually thinking i need (ok want) to add another pair of basic 5 pocket boyfriend jeans."

Kkards: AMEN.

I couldn't agree more. There are 2 ways of dealing with the footwear issue -- either you stick with slim straights or skinnies or crops for at home days...OR you bite the bullet and buy (or choose from your closet) a really good pair of house shoes (not slippers) so you feel fully "dressed" at home. I've used both methods and now prefer the "house shoe" method as it gives me more variety and I feel more grounded and fashionable even at home.

As for the ultra-high waist issue -- you want a waist that is comfortable and rib-crushing waists are not going to work. I like looser styles -- BFs and baggier fit straights. Either that or a lot of stretch, but I'm not fond of overly stretchy jeans for the most part.

Carla, now that you've seen your numbers, I earnestly hope that if budget allows you will increase your denim capsule! :)

I think this is evidence of how long it can take for us to make sense of a major life transition. You stopped working in an office and in retirement, your life is much more casual and jeans are worn more often. But your jeans capsule hasn't caught up.

Not that jeans are the only thing you could wear, or do wear, of course. It's just that...well...they are essential for your style! So...

Jeans are fundamental to my style and on Angie's smart advice, I tend to be an early adopter of trends I like or that work for my body, when I can find the right item. Like Irina, I do have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince. Occasionally, I get so frustrated I give up. That happened to me last year for a while.

I got onto BFs really early and am still wearing them. I got my first pair of cropped wider legs in....2016. Back then, the forum's eye hadn't adjusted...but I wore them and loved them. I've had a few other pairs since, but don't currently own a wide leg.

I got my first balloon jeans two years ago. (Alas, I chose the wrong colour for myself...).

Here's my current collection of denim. Brands and prices vary from lowest of the low ($27 Old Navy) to designer (Citizens of Humanity, purchased on sale but still pricey at around $100 to $130 CADI would like to add a cropped wide leg and a balloon leg for spring.) I wear most of my denim items extensively and some for years and years -- the denim jacket here is one of the first things I bought when I joined the forum in 2011.

Jeans tend to be most useful to me during spring and fall. I like them for cool weather but not cold weather. On a clear fall day, I can wear jeans all day long and be perfectly comfortable, but once there's a foot of snow on the ground, jeans are a no-go. They don't layer well over long johns or under snow pants, and once they get wet they feel sooo cold. I also tend not to rely on them in travel capsules because they are so bulky. I bring one pair at most. But for a lot of events (casual dinners, birthday parties, poetry readings/concerts/plays) I don't know what else I could wear that would feel authentic!

Style-wise, I do consider jeans fairly foundational, especially black ones (like Suntiger, I find blue denim can be too much when paired with most colours). My current assortment is five pairs black, two pairs blue, 1 pair blush (though faded to nearly white after a couple years of wear). I rarely have all of these in rotation at once. At the moment, one pair is a bit too big and another is a bit too small, so realistically I'm working with ~6 pairs at any given time. Considering I also have -- and often prefer -- other cotton pants (chinos, khakis, corduroys), it's still more than I need and I won't go out of my way to add more. I would like to have a pair of very pale blue jeans again, but haven't found the right ones.

I think you could justify adding a few more pairs based on your numbers! A full-length wide leg would be brilliant on you, and I think the right pair of loose-fit straight legs in white or pale blue would become workhorses for sure.

I love jeans and to me your collection is on the smaller side.
Finding a good fitting pair of jeans is not an easy task. I have to kiss a lot of toads to find my prince Last time I found Levi’s that fitted me well and bought them in 3 washes. I don’t wear jeans for long, maybe 3-4 years, after that some of them moved to casual wear but not often. I like to keep my denim current in style. I wear jeans often and have 9, one is ready probably to be discharged.

I have half a dozen pairs. I had a lightbulb moment this Winter and realized the reason I don’t really like my jeans is that I have been buying most of them in colors I don’t really look good in. So I bought some black jeans and they immediately worked with my wardrobe. So going forward, I think I will stick to black, grey and cream. I will still need to wear out the rest of what I have, but will think more carefully about pairing them with tops and accessories that lessen the impact of all the off palette blues.
