I was born in the mid 1960s. I wore a lot of army surplus and second hand. Sears Toughskins jeans were my mom's choice because they were sturdy. But my joy knew no bounds when I got my first pair of Dittos for junior high. (yay to MsMaven!) They had to be worn with Candies mules. Not sure what possessed my practical, frugal parents to get them for me. Or how I survived my early teens without fracturing an ankle.

Jo one mentioned Dittos or Chemin de Fer? Those are late 70s and early 80s brands. I had the cutest pair of Chemin de Fer sailor style jeans. Ive been a Gap girl for the last couple of decades except for when I wore 501s. Now it’s pretty much Gap or AG. I like Paige denim too. Still trying to find the right fit in Madewell. Had a brief romance with Kut for the Kloth too!

I bought my first pair of jeans (Wranglers) in 1974? with my own money (my mom refused to buy them for me). My next pair were a men's Levis 501 1976 (for some reason they just fit me really well), and then we enter the 1980s with designer Jordache, Calvin Klein, etc. For the past 10 + years I have been wearing Gap jeans (I love their long and lean and while it disappeared for a bit, they are back).

I grew up in New Jersey and I remember an army surplus store near Clinton that carried tons of jeans. You could spend an entire afternoon in that store.

Oh, I forgot about the Euro brands! I had some Diesel and Mavi (both made in Italy) that I really liked, and remember bringing home some G-Stars from an Amsterdam thrift shop in college -- great souvenir. That was early 00s; I think all of those would be waaay too low-rise for me now.

Such a fun trip down memory lane! Aside from Levi's 501 - they were everywhere, I think (and we loved the commercial with Nick Kamen!-) - I also wore Pepe. And there was another brand that was very popular in Belgium when I was about 15, but I can't remember the name (many of the jeans had a red rose appliqué on the back pockets).

Brand wise the ones i can think of were Jordache and later Guess, but im sure i had Levis and such. All the different washes we had, the stone washed and the acid washed were must haves. My all time favorites though, were the black ones that laced up the sides and the light wash ones with rhinestones:)

In high school, almost all my jeans were Chic. They were the only ones I could find that could fit my rear end without the waist being huge. Jeans shopping was a nightmare before spandex.

I also had one pair of Wrangler and one pair of Lee, if I recall right. But Chic was my mainstay.

Angie, about Girbaud, I assumed they were French, but who knows, maybe it was just great marketing! They had their own shop in Chicago into the late 90s at least.

Also, shout-out to Esprit and their crazy colored corduroys. I recall having a pair of pink ones in a painter pant style, with a button fly, and wore them with a grey and pink fair isle sweater, and a different grey sweater that buttoned up the back.

By the way, that was another thing for me in the 80s. We reversed our cardigans so they buttoned up the back. That was a trick my mom taught me from the 50s!

Oh what a coincidence. I was in Trieste just yesterday and was reminisencing about jeans shopping trips in early 80’s. Western jeans were not available
in former Yugoslavia and going on a day shopping trips to Italian border city Trieste was very popular. We would stock up on Levi’s 501 and Benetton sweaters. In late 80’s companies in Yugoslavia got license to produce Levi’s an Lee Cooper jeans. Later in early 90’s when imports started being more available I wore Diesel, Wrangler, Replay and Big Star jeans.

Elementary - Wranglers
Jr High - Guess Ankle zips
High school - Men's Levi 501 button-flies, or super acid washed Guess
College - GAP
Post-college - maternity jeans, then started exploring different specialty stores. Skipped the low rise trend, but bit hard on bootcuts/flares
Last 10 years - Brand matters less than fit. Skinnies ftw, and loved finding NYDJ
Now (post post post-college) - Ready to retire skinnies unless worn w boots. Focusing a lot on details - seaming, embroidery, buttons, etc.

Boarding school and old-world old-school parents - so no jeans for me until I was on my own.

Pic 1 - HASH elephant leg star jeans were all the rage and my first pair of denim in the '70's.

Pic 2 - Dickies painter pants - I had the cream, dark Jean, and faded Jean versions. Pic 3- Also Levi bib overalls in Jean and green corduroy in the '80's

Pic 3 - Wrangler regular straights or Levi 504 straights were the only jeans I wore for a long stretch (good fit)

No pic - last 5 years Hanna Highrise (straights and baby bootcut) from Marks Work Wear House due to high cotton content 99/1 or 98/2 when so many others were going with synthetics, and good fit for my body. I'm off the HH's since the fabrication has changed. I just can't abide stretchy jeans so read the labels for high cotton content.

My curremt faves are from Calvin Klein and JBrand.
