I always wash before taking to tailor but never dry... but I always line-dry denim anyway.

I always wash/dry 2 or 3 times before I take them in to get them hemmed. I want as much pre-shrinking done beforehand as possible. Pretty much everything in my household is run through the dryer....before kids, I was able sort out the things that were hang-to-dry. Just cannot do that anymore since I am trying to teach my kids to help with the laundry. I do make sure everything I purchase is tumble dry so I don't risk ruining anything in the dryer. Then pre-shrink before I get anything hemmed.

If they have lycra/elasticine content, putting them in the dryer may actually cause them to "grow" rather than shrink because the lycra weakens with the heat. I no longer put anything like that in the dryer with any heat. I experienced the bagginess it causes before I knew better. On the other hand, if they are 100% cotton, dry away.

Whenever I put jeans in the dryer, it is intentional, and usually with bad results, so I have stopped doing it all together. If a tailor refused to hem without a toss in the dryer, I would just lie and say I did. The reason tailors prefer you to dry is so that you don't come back and complain later that they are too short and try to blame it on them.

It depends what you normally do. If you normally put your jeans in the dryer and never have any problems with tightening or bagging, then go for it. Or if you anticipate that they will eventually get tossed in, you may as well. But for me, I would rather just TELL my family members/roommates not to do it and that has always resolved the issue with no further problems. I guess I'm lucky that my family always asks, or just puts my clothes in the dryer without turning it on. I would NEVER put someone else's clothes in the dryer without asking them first. I would CRY if someone did that to me! The only clothes I ever put in the dryer are loungewear, cotton underwear, and PJ's...everything else would be ruined.

Thank you! I just called the tailor I use and he said that he would perfer I ran them through the dryer at least once.

San I bought them at Dillard's and they charge for alterations and the tailor is cheaper.

National Jeans Company, where I get my jeans, strongly advises you to run them through the dryer before they hem.

And yesterday I was cruising Yelp and found the most well-regarded tailor in the city ... won all these awards, had raved reviews, sounds like he's outrageously expensive - interesting - he makes bespoke suits. In the comments it said he refuses to hem until you've run them through the dryer.

I usually wash mine a couple of times. I have run them through the dryer a bit with the thought that someday they are going to accidently be thrown in there anyway. I don't think this is recommended by anyone besides Shiny and myself though.
If my jeans are skinnies or straight leg I don't have them hemmed, just let them scrunch.
Does the store where you bought them offer free hemming?

I need to have my new jeans hemmed. Do you dry them before you take them or just line dry them. They are about 4 inches too long.
