Excellent - thank you so much shiny! I'd forgotten about stores that do free alterations. I think I'll get my next few pairs of jeans at Nordies or BR. This'll mean a bit of a trip to the nearest decent mall, but it'll be worth it for me. I am so done with cheap jeans.

Jeans are always too long on me, since I'm short, so I can't help you there. But for the hem you want a "reattached hem." That will preserve the original hem.

Yes, I would wear the shoes and have them pinned, instead of guessing and requesting a certain standard length. That can work sometimes, but sometimes the jeans fall differently. Also some people do best with a hem that's not even - i.e., longer in the back (because you have ample booty) or longer in the front (because you have thighs) or shorter on one leg than the other (because you have uneven hips or legs). If this is the case, you want the hem to be uneven and it'll give the appearance of evenness. If that makes sense.

Best bet is to buy jeans from a place that will do free alterations. I think Bloomie's and Nordstrom's do this. I know BR does it. And so does National Jean Company. If you have to go to a tailor, ask if they can "reattach" the hem. You will pay anywhere from $10-30 for this. You should probably shrink the jeans in the dryer (at least twice) before you get them hemmed.

I feel silly admitting this, but I've never had jeans hemmed before. Meanwhile, I'm having a bit of a tough time finding just the right length inseam for jeans. Turns out that for flats, a 32" inseam is best. So, here's me - thinking I'd want 34" inseams for most of my heels, which are around 2" for the most part. I mean, I do have some higher heels than this, but I'm kinda wobbly on them.

Do you generally just buy jeans that are too long and have them hemmed? I live in a small-ish town and wouldn't even know where to go to get this done, and I don't sew. Plus, can they hem jeans so they don't look like they've been hemmed (I don't like that look where the bottom of the jeans appears hemmed and the finish isn't there anymore - I mean the stitching etc.).

Do you have to go in somewhere with the jeans and try them on and have them pinned according to which shoes you want to wear with them - or do you just pay close attention to the inseam you bought, and then take them somewhere with instructions to hem them an inch or whatever the case may be?

Most jeans are not long enough for me, and yet - the 'tall' or 'long' would be a wee bit too long.

It's only since reading YLF that I've realized that most of my pants are too short. I always thought it was the shoes that were the problem - that they stuck out too much or something like that. Nope - it's the pants!

How do you buy jeans and then get the PPL ?

Thanks
