I'm short and have short heavy legs and a lo-o-o-ng torso. I like wearing cropped flares under straight shirt dresses; the proportions work much better on me than tunics which don't work at all. Since flares/bootcuts aren't a big thing vs. skinnies, I was able to find a couple of pairs at a thrift store for $10 each and then hacked them off. Well, actually I hacked the black pair and had the new to me blue pair replace my old blue bootcuts which I then hacked. I did the raw edge thing, and think I need to trim one pair a little more.

Hi Anne, I like Joy's idea of full length straight jean that can be cuffed for versatility. Target seem to be good for different washes and styles at a reasonable price.

I am short-legged and full-thighed and I love my cropped flares to death (I have 2 pair in denim, one blue, one black, and 4 pair trousers). I wear them with booties but I should caveat that half my shoe collection are booties so I have a lot to choose from. (-:

A higher shaft bootie will work better, Anne -- and definitely try crops. They do take some styling ingenuity but it's great to be able to wear in damp weather!

I would buy the footwear after the jeans, to ensure that the style and color of denim you pick will coordinate with the footwear you buy.

Hi Karen, I don't think I that fond of black jeans. I know what you mean about dressing them up or down but I don't wear all that much black. I'm not all that keen on how they fade either. Thanks for posting your jeans - they look good.

Hi Jenni, thanks for sharing about your jeans too. I probably won't go with elastic waist as this point as I am thinking about tucking, but I had some a few years ago that were so comfortable I often wore them to bed!

Brooklyn. I hope you are right about the higher shaft booties. I haven't seen many yet.

I did start looking at jeans today. This was a highwaisted skinny from Jeanswest. Not too impressed.

I wouldn't go for those boots if you are thinking about cropped denim. I think you need a pair with a higher shaft. There are lots around.
Last winter I found my ankle length straight leg jeans the most versatile because I could wear them full length in bad weather or cuff them for a cropped look.

I bought straight dark denim with a highish elastic waist about last September and have worn them a lot already, they seem practical for the wet spring and summer we have had. Have worn with navy/tan/gold loafers ( with fine navy socks) as well as booties. They were a bit long but I just tucked them up on the inside( I think it might be Garance Dore who called this a " French cuff" for jeans) which I could then change up depending on whether for flats or a small heeled bootie. I always hide my waist so it didn't matter they are elastic topped. Look smart IMO.

Would you consider black jeans? I feel they can be dressed up or down, depending on the supporting act and the wash. It might give you a good tonal look if you get those very nice looking boots.

Others here can better speak to current trends, but I recently bought this style and see that it comes in many washes. It is a nice straight leg mid rise.

Yes I agree Sally that they aren't around as much at all.

Your suggestions do give me pause. I' happy to go tonal looks, but do wonder if my preference for lower heels means I should pass. Still getting used to the idea of tucking jeans too. I accidentally worn some tucked out to pick my daughter up from a party last Saturday, and was wondering if I looked hip or 80's relic to the other mums! And if my midsection can take it.

I have not seen many of the cropped jeans around here Anne, the trend does not seem as strong in NZ as in the US.

From a climate perspective they would work well for you.

I think for people with a longer body/shorter legs there are a few things to do to make the look work (tonal looks/heeled boots/tucked tops etc).

A try on session?

Thanks Joy. Our winters aren't that cold by US standards, though I do feel the cold and wouldn't want bare leg showing, but they are wet (one practical, as opposed to fashionable, reason the bootcuts don't get worn much.
Do you think straights are more current looking than skinnies now?

If your winter weather is really cold and/or wet, I would hold off on cropped as my main workhorse and look for something closer to those that you are replacing. How about high waisted dark blue straights?

I am planning to buy one pair of jeans this year, and would like your advice
I currently own (and are fit to leave the house)
2 blue bootcuts (one for heels and one for flats)
1 white distressed relaxed skinny
1 white straight/bootcut
1 pair of straight legs (only worn when I am in the lower part of my weight range ie not much)

All the above have reasons not to be worn that often

and the one that is worn the most
1 pair of stretchy, highwaisted dark blue skinnes

They are 2 years old and wearing out. Should probably be replaced.

Or should it?

Am wondering if, I should take Angie's lead and finally look at cropped jeans?

And it so, should I look for booties first? I need to replace mine and want black ones of reasonable quality and in leather. Oh and low heeled.
I haven't tried it on, but maybe this one
http://www.easysteps.com.au/lincoln.html#185=300

Will this go with a cropped jean? Should someone of my body type (short legged, full thighed) even try to go with this trend? Especially if it is my main jeans workhorse?

I can potentially wear jeans up to 5 days a week - but only in winter.

love to hear your input!
