@suntiger: At least on some of my jeans, a minor button move can make the zipper sit better and be less bumpy. Of course YMMV.

@Zaeobi: I have used the button fix on ponte pants. I think it all depends on whether you think the diameter of the stem will damage the fabric and will be visible once removed. Of course you also need a button of the type used on jeans. Even if the original jeans button is larger, the smaller button fix works due to the tension.

I'm surprised changing the button, either to shrink or widen the waist, doesn't make the zip all wrong! I had read that pregnant women do that hair tie trick, but wondered how that even worked with the rest of the fit.

Got it, thanks for replying Guess I should categorise my waist alterations pile into minor & major fixes, then work accordingly...
Luckily I don't gravitate towards silver hardware, so that's good to know lol! Do you think they would work on other fabric types, or only stiff denim?

robin, I have found that small elastic bands ment not hair extend Jean waist lines well if you have a button to fasten them on.

@Zaeobi: The Amazon button studs work for me -- except that I can't pull apart the single silver finished one! The rest are gold tone. Be aware that they only work such that the 2 cm tightening holds them firmly in place above my pancake caboose on jeans that basically fit. I don't think that they are sufficient for jeans that need true waist alterations.

@RobinF
You can also DIY the extender Donna mentions with a stretchy hair tie - just knot it through the buttonhole (then you can 'hook' it onto the existing button by looping it around it). Might not look as neat as the dedicated Amazon option though.

@DonnaF
Do the Amazon button studs work for you? I'm also pear shaped, so the majority of my alterations pile are waist adjustments - this could really help!

@RobinF: Amazon (and I suppose other retailers) have a thingy that loops around the button and somehow extends the waistband. Since I gain my weight below my waist I have never looked into it.

@Joy: Your pants challenges sound beyond frustrating. Is your doctor truly aware how tiny you have become? As I grow older, I feel like I am increasingly ignored and dismissed by doctors.

Haha that is too funny!

My problem is actually the opposite, waistband too tight, but these could probably help for that too. I will often move a button out but of course that only works if it is a sew on button which it never is for jeans. I might have to try these.

I found that my jeans fastened in different ways . There are a few buttons, snaps, , slide in metal hook, etc. Most traditional fasteners will not work . All my jeans are a couple of sizes too big in order to wear them with my glucose meter. I tried smaller jeans but they do not work unless pull on.

Sounds like a great fix! I don’t have this particular fit problem anymore but I used to when I was younger. And my weight also fluctuated so alterations weren’t a great solution.

First of all, that comment about the barn door was hysterical!!

I too am pear shaped and could use an item like this, although for me pulling the front button in tighter is not as comfortable as taking the darts in the back (which I've done for decades). Good to have options!

Laughing. I haven't tried these, but I bought something similar. Buttons you could attach to a new spot to shorten the waistband. Can't quite remember how that was supposed to work.

I saw another method just recently. You use a pattern for a stitching guide to sew onto the back waistband, and when done you pull the threads together and you have a nice back V of material taken out. No gathers or wrinkles. Has someone tried this?

I'll admit I succumbed to a newsfeed article that must have been planted by Amazon. I am somewhat pear shaped so I carry my weight in my hips and thighs and waistbands are rarely too tight. Jeans slide down so they leave unsightly folds at the back of my legs. So I bought these cheap babies which work like stud earrings to move where your jeans button. They work even if your button and buttonhole are larger and eliminate having to wear a belt if you don't care to.

Btw they also sell a button extender.

Now I just have to stop reading the articles extolling the virtues of some cream (on sale now on Amazon!) that blurs wrinkles and has rave reviews by women in their 70s. Nothing like closing the barn door after the horse, cow, goat, and pig have escaped.
