Yes, to me the older BF jeans looked looser all over than now, so more like straights, but rolled at the hem.

Now I’m trying to remember that ad from ages ago about jeans that had “a skosh more room” in the thighs. Was that a Levi’s thing?

I’d like to add I remember older boyfriend jeans having wider legs where now they are more fitted in certain parts of the leg giving a slimmer appearance. They tend to not need a belt but look good with one.

Ah, this is why I tend to do better with bfs more than relaxed straights - thanks for the explanations. Suz, I’m with you on room in the thighs + taper - aren’t we both “Team Kinda Pear, Because Thighs”?
Thanks for asking the question, Smittie - was wondering the same thing.

La Ped and Smittie, I got the red in my jeans size (25). The are bigger on me than on the model - and they grow a little during the day. But I like them roomy - ‘80s style. So I did not size down. They fit well on the waist and rise. Comfy and just tailored enough. Baggy in the legs but not slouchy in the crotch. The type of jeans you need to wear on Thanksgiving Day ;)

Cute in the brown too!

Jeans are called so many different things. I tried on many styles this past week. What one label calls BF/GF is really a 'mom jean' in my mind.

The high waisted BF is a great look for me too. Now to find it.

Hmm, interesting! I wasn't aware of the difference.

I just ordered a pair of straights, and if the look bulky on me (I have very thin calves but large thighs), maybe I should try a higher-rise BF/GF.

Smittie, yes, I often have to go up a size or two in the new high waisted BF styles — but not the Eileen Fisher version, that I purchases, where I was a size down, typical for EF.

Most of the newer high rise styles are less stretchy. This has some pros and cons. I prefer the feel of the denim, but it can "bag out" a bit more easily both in the knee area and the waist/tummy.

I LOVE the look of the wider straights on the models and I think if I find the right pair it will be love for me, on me, as well. Just a question of finding the right ones, and for some reason it seems a tougher fit on me (at least so far). I did get the Madewell slim wide crops, which are sort of in-between a wide crop and a wide straight. I like them a lot, but the knees bag out.

Angie, sounds like you found your baggier straights for sure! LOVE the colour!

Smittie, below are the ones I got for fall. I'm not completely sure about the Madewell Perfect Vintage jean. Need to try it on again (tags still on) to decide. But the other three are winners so far. Got at NAS. And love to make jeans my trend item.

Jaime, you crack me up.

Smittie, YES. I was with THREE clients this week who - like me and Suz - make jeans the trendy part of their style. We have done a LOT of refreshing over the last year because jeans silhouettes are off the charts. PLEASE give the new silhouettes another go. Here to help and guide if you need it.

Suz, I loved the baggy jeans in the '80s. It was a better jean fit on me than in the '90s despite my love for 501s. That fitted waist, roomy thigh and tapered hem really worked! I hear you. My red Dickies are roomier on me than on the model (in the thighs), but I didn't size down because they fit quite well on the waist. No alterations needed! They're my new BAGGY jeans. I wear them with a tight tucked top and blazer. I can wear them with my warm jackets and coats too.

And AGREE that the new high waisted BF/GF jeans are sublime on you. You wear the NAS EF jeans with the best of them. Everyone has loved those jeans! You included :)

Sal, I'm thinking high rise bootcut for you.

Interesting - and I bet that manufacturers use different words too. One persons slims are another's skinnies as mid waist and high waist can be quite similar sometimes.....

You suit jeans so well Smittie and there is a huge variety. I want to get myself to a specialist retailer and try on a few different styles.

It is interesting Suz. I have many of the same modifiers as you but prefer a straight leg like the ones in Angie’s post.

This might just be personal preference for the silhouette. I remember trying a great number of roomy, tapered leg jeans and being disappointed. But now that I think about it, it might be because I was wearing the wrong size, and that the non-stretch denim requires me to go up a couple of sizes.

So I should give the high waist bfs another go.

Off topic: Like you and Angie, I want to make jeans my trend item. I find there is so much choice now that I could literally wear just mid-blue jeans all the time and have plenty of options.

Back to add...the high waisted BF is the best ever for me. Not unlike the 80s "mom" jean (a little different from the 90's "mom" jean). If the rise is long enough for my long rise, it lengthens my leg line while giving me ease where I need it most and tapering to a slim but not skinny, calf-sucking leg. I'm on the verge of petite, short waisted, long in the rise, slightly short-legged, with most of my curves in my thighs/bum (and some in the calf) and relatively slim hips, FWIW.

A jean like the ones in Angie's example does not tend to look as good on me right off the rack, but can be made to work really well with the right footwear.

Slouchy boyfriends are so good for the waistless. No belt needed! Anyway, I have jeans cut pretty much like Angies Dickies and jeans that taper in and now I know exactly which is which .

EXACTLY what Suz said, Smittie. Relaxed straights are not tapered at the hems - BF/GFs are.

I'm wearing these Dickies today. I LOVE their '80s vibe! They are baggy on the thighs and legs, but NOT slouchy. They are high waisted and fit on the waist and seat. The crotch point is tailored. Slouchy BFs from years ago were lower rise and sat on the hips. You had to rein them in with a belt or they fell off. The crotch points hung very low too.

The relaxed high rise straights - or Mom jeans - are the jeans of the early '90s.

Slim BFs tend to have a bit of a taper. The width is primarily in the thigh area. And it tapers a little bit toward the ankle, though not always obviously. Straights are straighter. Also, with the BFs, you usually would cuff them.

On my body type, the BF is the absolute best silhouette to wear. Ease in the place I need it (thighs) and the taper tends to make me look a bit more streamlined somehow or to lengthen the legline, I guess because it's more of a vertical line. Even with a cuff.
