Ms Maven, exactly! You can always remove (hem) fabric, but you can't add it! Also, on the website reviews someone stated that it is a few inches shorter than advertised.

Viva, you are so right that the target audience for J.Crew and the like is younger. I always see younger ages in the catalogs but 30's and up in the stores.

I'm debating whether or not to go and try it on one more time before declaring it too short. I think in addition to summer wear, it would look nice with tights and a blazer in the fall.

Some times I wonder about length descriptions--I've bought dresses that are supposed to be 40" and come to the model's knees, but apparently they were using a petite model for the photos.

Too bad because it is a great dress and looks good on you. I'm 5'8" as well and finding a dress is misery now. Why can't they make them a few inches longer and let buyers decide if they want them hemmed shorter? I'd be happy to pay $5 more for a couple of inches of extra fabric.

I actually feel for these companies. I think the problem is that it isn't easy to satisfy a broad continuum of demographics with one item. And now that older (ahem!) women like me (51) are dressing fabber, brand crossover is typical.

Just yesterday, I bought a long striped tunic-y t-shirt at Brandy Melville -- a low-fashion purchase for sure ($20) but exactly what I wanted. The point is, my daughters shop at that store (19 and 23) as does my neice (age 13!). In fact, on this forum, women of all ages talk about shopping at F21, Topshop, AND Nordstrom.

JCrew sells to girls in high school and college, as well as to women in their 50s and 60s. That's why their dresses are not knee-length and longer. (I don't think it has to do with how tall they think people are -- I think they are trying to remain relevant to younger shoppers.)

Personally I wish they had separate line that was a bit more sophisticated, but as long as they keep catering to everyone, we'll keep seeing dresses and skirts that err on the shorter side, I'm afraid.

PS Karie, to me that dress doesn't seem short, but it may be our different tastes or the camera angle. Gorgeous print!

Linda, that's crazy! I'm 5'8" so I do have the problem of things being short, but their website says the length is 37 1/4 inches so that should be plenty long enough. I have a similar style of dress that I bought from them last year which is right about knee length.

They seem to be making their dresses and skirts shorter, and I wonder why? I don't like that at all.

I'm not even 5' 2" and I've had to have J. Crew skirts taken down. Insanity.

I feel your pain re: the length of skirts and dresses! In fact, I havent worn a skirt or dress since the last time the styles were longer...so you know it's been a while! If you're lucky a skirt might be 24", which is still well above the knee for me. But I don't need a tall, because my torso is average. Frustrating! I am able to find pants in talls.

Karie, stunning dress on you! I am not convinced it too short, but that has to be your call:) Definitely write to them and express your needs. If they are sensible they will listen to their customers. And I bet you are not the only one wanting longer lengths.

Beth Ann, the waist in this dress is exactly where it should be - and most aren't - but of course it's J.Crew and they always get that right, so I don't think the tall would work.

Suz, not enough of a seam allowance to let down the hem.

I want to write a strongly worded letter to J.Crew! Their clothes, for the most part, fit me perfectly. Except just add two inches! But only on dresses and pants, please. Two, that's all I ask. I'll even settle for one.

I have purchased Gap dresses in tall to combat this issue. It worked for me, because I run a bit long in the waist. Might be worth checking online.

Niki Lea, it does! I know it comes in pants, not sure about tops. It just annoys me because the fit of that dress was spot on (it's not zipped all the way up on me, the zipper is about 2 inches down in the back, so the neckline would be fitted better if it were all the way up) - I just would have liked another inch or two. It's longer on the model and I was hoping it would be to the knee on me.

Karie, that's a lovely print! I find the same thing with a lot of dresses - I'm also just too darn tall for the hemlines. Does that print come in separates?
