I love this strategy. I wish AT & Gap would follow suit. Waiting for the 40% sales is annoying. I'd rather just know that I'm paying the actual price and then have end of the season markdowns for the items that didn't sell out.

This is good! Retailers everywhere are looking for ways to entice more customers into buying more stuff, and the easiest way to do that is to cut prices and make it up on volume. J.C. Penney, the nationwide store chain, is attempting to find ways to increase its bottom line and has put together a new strategy. The store is reducing all costs by 40 percent but will have fewer product sales. J.C. Penny may need installment loans to keep going for a while if things do not look up soon.

Just wanted to chime in after visiting my local JCP today. I'm a regular Penney's customer and I have to say I like the new pricing strategy! Keeping up with all their sales and promotions last year was down right exhausting. I was constantly watching for coupons and promo codes and timing my shopping trips around advertised sales and doorbusters. I can't tell you how many times I bought something on sale with a coupon only to have it go on sale even cheaper a week or even a day or two later. Like Refugee, I learned to never pay full price for any of their merchandise. During my visit today, I compared the *new* prices on several items to the discounted prices I paid a few months ago and they were within a dollar or two of what I paid. That takes a lot of anxiety out of buying because now I know I'm getting a good deal without all the extra fuss.

I'm a regular jcp.com shopper, primarily because their petite sizing fits me. Unfortunately, the local store has a LOUSY, super small (almost non-existent) petite dept. YET I can find a decent selection of petite clothing online.

I never pay full price, and always go to retailmenot.com to find a promo code. I'd rather see realistic prices, though, particularly since most clothing is made overseas and not worth the full retail price. It's not like we're paying for American labor.

I really like this strategy. I tend to avoid shopping at Macy's, Gap, Ann Taylor and the like because I would feel like a rube buying things full price when they have frequent sales but I don't always have time to keep track of when the sales are or find the right coupons, etc. etc. I'd rather have lower prices all the time (and yay for round numbers on the prices!).

However, I don't know that I would necessarily shop at JCP. I don't think there is one near me and it doesn't sound like they'd carry the kind of clothes I'd like to wear (Nordstrom, Anthro, White House Black Market style clothes)? Correct me if I'm wrong though, I don't like to sound like a clothes snob. But I went to Sears to return some Lands End clothes and I felt like stuff there was pretty old fashioned and frumpy-looking. It was kinda depressing. Reminds me of shopping at Mervyn's when I was growing up.

Wow! I really like the sound of this strategy. Those 3-day department store sales/coupons are such a farce. This just seems so much more reasonable and simple. At this point in my life, I really like simple!

I haven't shopped at JC Penney in quite awhile, though I did get a great winter coat there a few years back. The thing that drove me nuts was their sales that were either in the morning or in the afternoon. I distinctly remember going to put some stuff on hold at customer service because they were having one of their weird sales again, and the sale price wasn't going to kick in until 3pm. I said, "Do you really want me to put these on hold and come back in an hour?"

The clerk gave me the discount right then and there, but I do find it annoying these silly sales that are only on until noon or after 3pm or whatever the deal is. I feel like a moron having to time my shopping to 'early bird' or 'midnight madness' or whatever the deal is, and to be totally honest - the end result has been me not shopping at those stores!

Don't get me wrong, I love a good sale - but I don't like having to remember a coupon, or having to shop at certain hours of the day to get the sale price. I like it a lot better when a retailer simply says "40% off everything," without saying that it's only between 9 and noon or after 3 or what have you.

Meanwhile, even too many sales - well, it makes me not want to shop for things because I'm thinking in the back of my head, "As soon as I buy this, it'll go on sale in a week..." etc.

I think this is a very good move on JC Penney's part.

Interesting. I don't shop at JCP so I can't speak about them directly, but I'm not sure how this would affect my shopping habits in general. I am an avowed bargain hunter and I rather enjoy the whole price-stalking thing; on the other hand this might make me more of an impulse spender since I wouldn't be worrying about the price going down later. It reminds me a lot of Ikea, actually, with things being very well priced but rarely going on sale.

Oh, and I just saw the new JCP commercials on TV and I HATE them. All that screaming... ugh, why???

I'm a fairly regular JCP shopper, and I am excited about this. Their old business model of putting things on sale every 20 minutes taught me to never pay full price for anything in their store. And it really gave the impression that the garment wasn't worth the full price.
So I'm looking forward to the new more consistent and realistic pricing.

I liked reading about this. I am a bottom line kind of shopper and don't really respond that much to % off markdowns. I mean, if a $330 dress is now $19.99 that's obviously awesome, but I mean the $69.50 put on 40% off type of thing that seems to be ubiquitous (and feels like a lie, really). I'd much rather feel that I don't have to be there on a magical lucky day to get a decent price. I'm all for it.

Prices for lots of things have been too high for too long. I appreciate JP recognizing the need for deflation. I hope that other companies in other industries follow suit - maybe then education and homes in CA will one day be affordable to the average family.

I wish them well as I have fond memories of JCP as a child and they have decent home items, but honestly I rarely go in our JCP because it just seems overcrowded and hard to find anything. Their website has tons of great deals but you only find once you put something in your cart that the item is not available. What?? Shipping to store is only $2 less than shipping to your house? Really? At Christmas I had a $10 off $10 purchase coupon that they would not allow me to use on a $9.99 item. Hello?
As for the simple tags they might work for some, but I personally miss the Nordstrom Rack % off tags that they recently did away with. Now it seems like nothing ever gets additional markdowns and mentally I felt I did better when I could see it was an extra 50% off or extra 75% off.
I think Penney's main competition is Kohls and they should be looking at their rewards programs etc... focused on JCP card holders like Kohl's does. They seem to be making constant sales work for them (also a store I do not frequent, but I perceive they do well based on my bargain post sites)

Interesting. I had to read the part about whole dollar pricing twice... that almost seems unamerican... LOL
I do wonder how the new "pricing labels" will be perceived by shoppers. ie: the "every day price", "month long value" and "best price". I know when I see the EDV tags at Macy's, I think "sub-par quality" Maybe I'm just ultra visually sensitive. And didn't it also say there would be different colors used to indicate the every day price, special promotion price and clearance? IDK.. that could put across the impression of being a "bargain store" Kindof K-martish. Or maybe that's what they are after. I haven't been in a JCP for years as we dont' have one nearby.
I do applaud them for being brave enough to step out of the ridiculous pricing mark ups and then perpetual sales. That does drive me batty!
