Thanks for the review, Diana! I put the Nivea on my list to try. I used to love the old formulation of Biore "watery essence", but the 2017 formulation doesn't get as great reviews. I ended up receiving it anyway today, because it took so long to arrive that I refunded the Amazon order... and then when it did arrive, it turned out to be the new formula instead of the old one in their product photo.

I also have a Rohto Japanese sunscreen on order (Find attached).

I have normal-to-dry, eczema-prone but not especially sensitive skin. I always layer my daily moisturizer under the Biore, and if I forget to take it off at night I get clogged pores... But that's my fault for not washing my face at night. I know some people don't do well with alcohol in their sunscreens but the fluid Japanese formulations are the ONLY kind that I've been willing to wear on an everyday basis. I don't burn easily so it's tempting to just go without sun protection.

I bought a Japanese UV Gel by a brand named Senka recently and I love it so much! I have very sensitive skin even the Neutrogena Sensitive Skin sunscreen burned when I put it on. So I was using some expensive lancome stuff in a tiny little bottle. I think the UV Gel is comparable to lancome and cost the equivalent of about 10 USD, a third the price of lancome. I don't know the ingredients though because they are written in Japanese and Korean, but so far no negative reactions.

Anyone with dry, sensitive skin might want to patch test this sunscreen before going for a full application. Ethanol/alcohol can be pretty harsh on dry, sensitive skin and allergic reactions to cinnamates are becoming more common because so many skin products and sunscreens use cinnamate derivatives. Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate and its cousins are very effective UVB blockers, but they are also coming under more scrutiny since recent EU research raises questions about cinnamates as a potential hormone disrupter

My dermatologist warned me to stay away from cinnamates after I broke out in a rash using a product containing oxtinoxate, a type of cinnamate. The EU and Canada have both put this chemical on a restricted list and the EWG rates it as a 5 or 6 for potential toxicity.

I checked out this sunscreen on Amazon, and it looks like one of the main ingredients is ethanol, i e alcohol (the ingredients are listed by the seller under "questions"). Not good for sensitive skin, or any skin, for that matter. Potentially irritating.

(This is in my olay moisturizer so I know I'm not sensitive to it.) The other two are Uvinul A and Uvinul T150, which I believe are used only in Japan.

Biore: http://www.cosdna.com/eng/cosmetic_98e1275107.html
Looks like the Biore has the same sunscreens as Nivea plus one other.

I should think so, Angie. Lots of people use it daily. People tend to recommend the biore for face, but I think that might just be because it's a stronger sunblock. (The PA rating is some kind of japanese rating that I think is supposed to be more accurate than SPF and the biore has a higher PA rating). I think there is some percentage of alcohol in it so some people might find it drying, but I also think you could easily layer moisturizer/foundation over.

Thanks for sharing. I checked it in Amazon and they do ship to Mexico, but the shipping costs are high. I have a p.o. box in the U.S., so I might try that option although I would have to wait more to check it. I have olive skin, but I DO burn easily if I am not wearing high spf sunscreen.

I mentioned in the comments of today's blog post that I had started using this Japanese Nivea "water gel" sunscreen and Angie asked me to post the find, so here it is.

For those who haven't read my comment, this is almost weightless, invisible, non-smelly, and not at all greasy. It absorbs almost immediately and feels like nothing. Japanese sunscreen technology is a lot more advanced in general than American. The big thing for me is that they don't use Avobenzone, which I am allergic to and which is in most US-manufactured chemical sunblocks.

Down side is that I do not think it is waterproof. (I think it's OK if you sweat a bit, though I don't really know how to tell since it feels like nothing, but I wouldn't use it if I were going swimming or something. Since that's a very rare occurrence for me, I don't care.)

Shipping takes forever (since it comes from Japan) but is free so whatever.

Here is a reddit thread with more info:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Asian.....water_gel/

The Biore is another Japanese product that gets rave reviews, although I haven't tried it. Since I wanted it for my body mostly, I bought the Nivea because it was bigger and more economical. I think the Biore is supposed to have better UvA protection and is also waterproof. I may get a tube to try as well.

NOTE: you have to get the japanese products, not Nivea or Biore from the US or Europe, because the formulations are different.

ETA: I mostly use this on days when I'm going to be outdoors for more than my typical 15 minutes morning walk to the bus (on work days this is pretty much the only significant sun exposure I get). On those days I just wear my regular spf15 face moisturizer. I know I should probably start wearing sunscreen on my arms daily!

I am not very pale and don't burn easily, but many pale women who DO burn easily also swear by these Japanese products.
