I was in Kyoto 10 years ago in early January and it snowed. Not heavy snow, but quite sleety and cold. Now I live in Australia, so that was very cold for me. I don't think there is a photo of me from that trip not wearing my very heavy wool coat, gloves and scarf. Having said that, we had a WONDERFUL time, Japan has less tourists at that time and you will get to eat and enjoy the most amazing soups and noodle dishes that are sublime on a cold day.

Our son, who lives in Tokyo says be prepared for for cold weather and being outside for 3-4 hours at a time, and is thinking that you will want a warm winter coat or lots of layers. He says lots of places will be closed at that time. Just a heads up. He walks most places or takes the train/ subway.

Hello Fabbers!
We are planning a trip to Japan for winter break (Christmas to New Years). I seriously need some advice on how cold it will be there (Tokyo, Kyoto) and dressing for the weather. I feel the Uniqlo puffer + sweater may not be sufficient even though. Not sure I want to carry around thick wool coat though. Suggestions? tIa.
