<p>annagybe, K.M. and others, as you may (or may not) have noticed, the subject of high heels at Japanese workplaces was also mentioned in two links (one of them suggested by La Pedestrienne) in Inge's post "Link love" yesterday. Interesting subject.

<p><div><b>Angie</b>, yes, I noticed how stylish the men are, and the hair too! Although I didn't pay attention to the no-tattoo thing, I had been warned that people with tattoos can't go to the onsen baths (which was one of our favorite things).</div><div><br /></div><div><b>Style Fan</b>, yes, I think it depends on the person and body type. The people I saw looked very elegant with their "improper" pant lengths!</div><div><br /></div><div>I also noticed many women wearing long fingerless gloves made of thin fabrics. Later I saw them in a store, sold as UV protection. Many people carry parasols. I guess they are intent on covering up from the sun?</div><div><br /></div><div>Overall I thought everything and everywhere was so clean, well designed, well maintained, so neat: places, objects, systems... The elegance in clothes seems part of this culture of neatness. I love it and I'm so inspired now not only for my wardrobe but also my home and everyday life. It seems to me a culture of "doing more with less" and making simple things feel special. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div></p>

<p>Absolutely dead right! </p>
<p>No body con. Very few pairs of jeans. Lots of layers. Men are funkier than ladies - especially with their hair. Lots of interesting proportions, sensible shoes, and men in suits. NEUTRAL, classic, avant grade, OTT, traditional or very trendy. Depends whether you are in Ginza, Harajuku, Yokohama or Kyoto. No tattoos unless you are a tourist or Yakuza.&nbsp;</p>
<p>EVERYONE wears hose. Even teens wear hose with short shorts!</p>

<p>When I was in Tokyo last June, I too was struck by the polish of all the locals - they looked so cool and put together even in the swelter - 80s and 90s F temps and very humid. </p>
<p>You raise an interesting point about PPL and the coolness (temp) factor. I look forward to seeing experiments here.

I heard a lot about them but haven't looked at their offerings too closely. It did remind me of certain Uniqlo stylings, but with more variations. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Now, if only there were a quick way to get over my jet lag! It took me two weeks to get over it on the way there, and then I flew home the next day. I hope it won't take me a full two weeks here to get back on my usual time zone... 14 hours of difference!<br /></div>

<p>These are excellent observations and match what I have seen of Japanese street style on the internet. I think you hit on a lot of why it works - structure at the ankle and waist, stiff geometric rather than soft billowy fabrics. Very interesting and well observed - thanks for sharing!

<p><div>Just back from two weeks in Japan (thanks for your packing tips!). As many of you told me, people are very elegant. Thoughtful but&nbsp; understated. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Here's what I noted:</div><div><br /></div><div>- Loose clothes with a geometric, structured feel, especially A-lines, wide legs, and triangular forms with the widest part at the bottom</div><div>- Wide legs in airy but firm fabrics (not drapey), worn at all lengths, from culottes to ankle to full-length</div><div>- No one wears extra-long wide legs. Full-length wide legs are hemmed so that the feet/shoes are fully visible. <br /></div><div>- Tops are tucked in but also voluminous, so there's shape to the silhouettes.<br /></div><div>- Neutrals and subdued colors dominate. Rare prints, and mostly also neutral.<br /></div><div>- Although I spotted heels and platforms, most people were wearing sensible footwear--flats, low heels, wedges, even sneakers!</div><div>- Nary a skinny pant, almost no body-con<br /></div><div>- A fringe trend of ultra frilly, romantic dresses, almost doll-like</div><div>- Many people were wearing not only sheer hosiery but semi-opaque dark tights even though it was quite warm (70s-80s)</div><div>- Similarly, many people were wearing sweaters and jackets and layers and they didn't look bothered by the heat!</div><div><br /></div><div>I was reminded of the aesthetics and proportions of traditional kimonos and yukatas, and of the crisp folds of origami. I'm super inspired, as it all looked fresh, beautiful, and also comfortable. <br /></div><div><br /></div><div>Also, the pant lengths are very much in my mind. I imagine they wouldn't pass the PPL test--too long for crops, too short for full-length--yet people don't look stumpy. Maybe the higher waists and tucked-in tops balance it out. Definitely a practical length for people who walk and take public transit most of the time, even if wearing heels. I am very tempted to give this a try...</div><div><br /></div><div>I didn't take pictures of street fashions as I didn't want to invade anyone's privacy, except for this one shot I snapped from my hotel window, and which is blurry and far enough to protect people's identities...<br /></div><div><br /></div>
