I will join you in your challenge in February .I am going for year three of no buying anything new except underwear. I will try to wear unworn things from my closet at least once a week, maybe more, in March. It should be easy as I have saved dark neutrals to wear this time of year. I have lost weight so much no longer fits. I think I have lost enough so look forward to putting some back on. I did not want to lose but rack it up to meds. The doctor agrees. I went from size M to XS. You do not to be diabetic to lose weight. It is no fun to stick yourself with needles all the time and not eat what you want when you want. The Consignment Shop is my friend.

What a great post. I did not manage to spend much time on the forum during January so was not able to follow your challenge as closely as I would have liked but this wrap-up is pure gold! I echo Runcarla re: your very well thought out and concisely expressed lessons from the challenge. I expect you'll be able to just roll on with your mojo into spring and summer!

(Oh! But I do disagree with your annual review. Part of the point of having experience is to be able to say "we tried that before and it didn't work" -- that is, to recognize when new ideas are really not so new. Of course I suppose there are more and less polite/effective ways of conveying that, but my Gen X soul resists!)

I didn’t comment on all your posts for the month but I enjoyed looking at all your outfits. You have a great wardrobe especially jeans and footwear and you have great imagination for mixing your clothes and making new outfits. I really agree to be open to new ideas is important and can really help us to look current.

I'm really taken with your insights here, kkards. So inspiring. Well done! I enjoyed seeing your outfits. Looking forward to February! I'm on the same wave length with closet orphans or things I haven't worn for a while. I'm sitting here in a long hooded zip-up wool sweater from my days working at OSKA that is just the thing on this chilly day. I don't think I wore it for at least the last two winters. I feel stylish, current, and comfy. It's keeper. Too late for a photo today, but maybe I'll take some along the way in the coming weeks.

First, you rocked the January challenge and I look forward to the February one! As a fellow sporty person with a casual lifestyle I really admire your wardrobe.

Also, I really understand struggling with the adjustment to a WFH/hybrid lifestyle. I WFH most days and initially I was in sweatpants every single day. That didn't work for me, it's comfortable but dressing in non-sweats helps put me in a working mindset. It also helps with separation of work from not working on days when I don't leave the house.

I now use WFH days as a chance to make my business casual and formal clothes work harder. Hoodies with suit trousers is a great example of how I do that. I still have a capsule of business clothing because I do travel to the office and/or client meetings and still need to dress for those occasions, but mixing up these pieces when I WFH allows me to get a lot more mileage out of them. And, it's fun!

You had a great month, Kkards, and you absolutely looked current every single day!

I'm a big fan of "hard pants" with more casual tops or at least easy tops - that is more or less my work from home uniform, in fact. I wear jeans far more often when I go out than I wear them at home now! Of course my "hard" pants are not exactly hard, really -- most have a bit of stretch or a lot of ease, and they are not binding.

I like your February challenge and may join in!

I have been really sick these past three days and stuck in the “guest room/wardrobe overflow space”.
ALL. THESE. CLOTHES ?!?
Thank you for giving me motivation to de-boomerize and keep only the pieces that fit my life now. I loved your giving grace to wearing comfortable outfits, but not compromising on joy and style.

Your conclusions really resonated with me. I'm just beginning a massive wardrobe evaluation, and downsizing, and the points you make are like guideposts for me.

And wear hard pants with relaxed sporty tops and sneakers to keep things interesting.

That especially struck me because just last night I was pulling things out of my closet to try, and landed on my only suit, plum colored blazer and pants from COS. I still love the pants but the suddenly the jacket looked just too much of a muchness. But without it, what would I wear with the pants? At the time, I had on ancient black cargo joggers and an oversized golden brown tee, so I popped on the pants with the tee, pulled on a plum overdyed oversized denim jacket (a recent acquisition), and added dark gold Ecco sneakers (a this year's Christmas present) to the mix. It just worked. I felt more like me and could see this working in my everyday life.

I'm sure going to keep your conclusions in mind as I go forward. Now I don't mind at all about releasing that blazer into the wild!

So pleased for you that you’ve got your mojo back. It is much nicer for each of us if we enjoy our pieces, since we put time, effort and money into choosing them!
Good to remember that you don’t need to buy as many pants and jeans as in the past.
I have been doing your February challenge for some time really, trying to wear my less worn items. Success in January wearing my Laura Ashley silk skirt 4 times thinking it covers me as well as pants do, and it’s beautiful, I should wear it! And wearing a floral dress twice to work as well. Got an amazing heart-felt compliment from a young woman in her early thirties on that one.
So I will join you in the February challenge.

First I want to thank everyone who commented, shared and cheered me on this month

The rest of this post will be long, navel gazing and rambling, feel free to skip it

I started the challenge this year because I wanted to get my fashion mojo back. For the back half of 2024 getting dressed was more of something I had to do, and taking pleasure in putting together outfits was gone. I wanted it back. And the challenge worked. Just the act of photographing each day’s outfit made me think about how and what I was going to wear. And the joy I got from that was fabulous.

I’ve also been struggling with what my WFH/hybrid schedule looks like. And I mean literally looks like. During the WFH days of the pandemic I actively wore “hard pants” and dressed more. But with the return to office 3 days a week I found myself wearing more athletic or athletic adjacent clothing. I wasn’t sure if I was just being lazy or if this was really where I wanted to go. This month of deliberation and documentation has been very helpful. Yes, for me, in this new chapter I want easy and flexibility in what I wear at home to work. And athleisure as Angie calls, is my WFH uniform. For the 3 days a week I’m in the office I want to lean more into a casual business or sporty luxe outfits. I want to continue to refine how and when I wear my more tailored pieces. In my original post I mentioned not wanting to “dress like a boomer”. As I am reminded often during my annual review I have a lot of experience, but I needed to be careful not to say we tried that before and it didn’t work. Because it’s important to be open to new ideas and different perspectives. And that’s what I meant about not dressing like a boomer. I’m not trying to make any one think I’m younger than I am, but I want to continue to show that I understand what’s current and what’s modern and I’m not stuck in the past. (I hope that makes sense) Anyway, I think I’m working on that that balance and mostly getting it right

This leads me to my do and don’t list

Don’t -. Don’t buy another blazer. Don’t beat myself up for wearing pull on pants and a sweatshirt, but don’t go crazy buying more . Don’t buy more sneakers unless I’m actively replacing a pair.

Do - invest in underwear/layering pieces as needed as they truly are the foundation of everything. Do look for jeans and pants that interesting but remember that I don’t need as many as I did in the past. Do look for athleisure pieces that can work at the office or at home. Do look for ways to mix tailored clothing and shoes with joggers and knit pants. And wear hard pants with relaxed sporty tops and sneakers to keep things interesting.

So if you’re still reading thank you.

I’ll close with a challenge for February. At least once a week I’m going to try to wear something that’s either become a closet orphan or is something that is sitting unworn. Please feel free in, the more the merrier
