Thanks for keeping us accountable, Sterling!

I committed, somewhat arbitrarily, to 31 items in 2019, counting gear and loungewear, but not underwear. I bought 0 items in January.

I did, however, order two slow items that haven't yet arrived. One is truly slow fashion, made to order with a 3-4 week lead time. If I decide to keep either or both, I'll report back in February.

Good to be accountable Sterling and I like your additions.

Jeans are tricky - it can take a while for the eye to adjust to high waisted styles and there are a few styling tricks you can play around with to make them more flattering if you want to.

I added three pieces in January - two thrifted items (cardigan and silky bomber) and one pair of the Eileen Fisher sandals (still to arrive here). I committed to 30 items including gear, sunglasses and bags (but not socks, hosiery, underwear). In February I plan to get some new running shoes and probably that will be it. I have a full summer and transitional weather closet and very few holes. Whereas I do have some winter holes!!

Great update! I love that colorblocked top from Boden, and I think your reasoning on the jeans is sound. I have a really hard time reconciling comfort and flattery when it comes to jeans and pants. Finding pairs that offer both is almost impossible.

I missed out on suntiger's original thread and haven't quite decided how I'm going to budget this year. I generally try to stay under 50 "wearable" items total (that includes everything: basics, gear, accessories like sunnies and jewelry), and except for a few very specific categories (footwear and outerwear), I have a fairly strict "double digit" pricing rule: nothing over $100 except in very special circumstances. I might try chopping my annual total down to 25 or 30 items since I'm really in maintenance-mode at this point, no need to add more. My price limit works well for me and I plan to stick to it.

I feel I don't need much right now and have been incredibly picky about buying/trying this past month. In fact, my *only* wardrobe-related purchases in January were basics (2 bralettes, 4 briefs, and a pair of HEWI navy micro-fishnet tights). I ordered a few other things to try (two dresses, a pair of pants, a pair of boots), but all of them went back. On the bright side, I think my basics shopping for the year is complete!

My big purchase in February will probably be a pair of insulated ski pants. (Of course, if I didn't count gear and basics, I'd still be at zero...) After that, I might start thinking about making my spring/summer additions.

The Madewell jeans. Thank you for asking, Suz and Bonnie.

Everything I loved about Madewell is still true. The jeans are well made. The cotton feels great against my skin. I can't complain about the product or the service.

I made a mistake.

The jeans are high waisted (which I wanted to try). High waist combined with girlfriend styling translates to excess fabric in the hip and thigh area. I thought this excess fabric meant comfortable fit, but when I saw how I looked in full length mirrors with good lightening I realized it really means poor fit and sloppy looking.

The jeans did not look right on me. There was all this excess fabric in the thigh area that did not look intentional. The high waist rounded into a major pooch. I had to see the effect in a full length mirror. It is not at all evident in my bathroom mirror. But once I saw it, there was no unseeing it. I don't know how I failed to see it at home.

I should add that there were some posts on the Forum that spoke to the difficulties of wearing high waist jeans. Perhaps those posts made me look, really look at what I was seeing with new eyes too.

I will not be purging those jeans. I will just be aware of their shortcoming and wear them around the house.

I really like that Boden top. Did you discover the jeans didn't fit well after you purchased them? At least they must be comfortable if you wear them on weekends and evenings, so that's an important quality.

So I had a goal of no more than 5 items purchased. I also had a financial goal in mind, but it encompasses all my discretionary spending, so I'll just say that I was able to meet the goal. I did overbuy, but I ended up returning things that weren't quite right. In one case, I may re-purchase in a different size. The coat was a wildcard but I couldn't be more thrilled with it, or with the price I paid.

I plan to add at least two more items in Feb, but it will likely be more. I need a navy sweater and black jeans. There's also a striped sweater at BR I've falled in love with.

I purged about 14 items, not counting undies and loungewear.

For this challenge, I am only counting stuff I will wear visibly outside the house. But I will report that did buy a lot of other stuff in terms of basics and loungewear, which I'm not counting but were desperately needed (included some finds). I plan to continue that into February, as my apartment is so hot this winter that my needs have shifted, and I purged a lot of old, sloppy looking stuff. I've also adjusted my bra size and bought a great bra from Third Love (they of the annoying Facebook ads). I'd like one more in a different color. I'd also like some more pajama sets with shorts and tanks (again, the heat, especially at night), and something kind of sexy since I purged basically ALL my lingerie.

Great job, Sterling! Those socks look super cozy. I would love to hear more about the Madewells and what makes you think they are not flattering you.

I didn't commit to a number of items but I'm aiming at 25, which would be about half what I purchased this year. I also plan to edit even more this year to reduce my overall closet size by about 20 items.

However I 'm not counting gear or socks or basics in this total. So although I made purchases in January, it was all gear items.

@Christina its up to you! We could do a monthly check in, or as we add things.
Heres mine -not counting a blouse Im returning:
Tie dye top from Etsy for casual winter wear.
Black blouse-wearing today though need to refigure the way it fastens in back. Has buttons that are fussy-may change to a snap.
Trainers-because I told myself I wasnt allowed to buy anything else before replacing. More of an orchid purple irl.

I committed to 48 pieces this year. Down from 65? last year. So far I’ve bought 10 items!! 4 are socks from Costco ... my husband brought them home but I’m keeping them. Two items were inspired by lisa p - puffer and sweater. I bought two footwear - booties and Birkenstocks. And finally a sweatshirt and pants for lounging and winter outdoor activities.

Sterling, thank you for this reminder of the challenge. In January I bought 6 pieces of my 36: white booties, replacement puffer coat, colorful loafers,
pink earrings, and 2 consignment pieces...a replacement bag and an EF black tube skirt. I am tempted to not count second hand items as it encourages me to check those stores and online. I will probably not buy during February unless something is needed for a trip in the middle of the month, like higher snow boots.

I bought five items in January.

Two pair of socks (duplication). These are some of the best lounging socks ever invented. They were on sale. I knew I needed them.
