Greyscale… thanks so
much for your lovely comments. I’m a bit
humbled that you say “my personal style comes through loud and clear”… I need
to step back, because I still feel I’m very much trying to find it. I’d really appreciate any descriptors, monikers
etc that come to mind when you look at my outfits. Blouses are fairly new to me, as I generally
have fit issues, (okay, I also have ironing issues) but I do like them, and are
glad to finally have a few. Glad they
work!

Gigi, I do like the windowpane pants, there was just
something about this particular way of wearing them that didn’t thrill me. I’ve also worn them with a black sweater, and
loved them. I think I will do some
pinning though, to see if the leg cut and length can be improved. And I will try the shirt in #4 untucked another
time, maybe with my low slung black belt.

L’Abeille, thank you also for the comments on my style
advancing, much appreciated (if hard to get my head around!). Interesting comments about the contrast, I do
think it helps. Although I have a friend
who’s always trying to get me into colour!
And I did put that #2 in the second post in the wrong spot. Funny how many of you picked up on that. Thanks for checking out DYT! I personally think it’s an awesome program,
so much more than clothes…

MuseumGal, good point about the jewelry and scarf. With the coloured tops, maybe I need to try
harder to get that contrast.

Thanks Kellygirl!
Good point about the substantial (unflattering?) tops. And Lisa, I think you are right about the
accessories.. that “fourth piece” I seem to need.

Carter, #4 is one of my favs as well, … but 20 years
younger!! Guess I’ll be repeating that J

And thanks Caro, I think I really need to pay attention to
that “break”. Not so much an issue with
lower rise pants that I can semi tuck, but it doesn’t work with all my pants.

Thanks Shevia! Still
waiting to debut those white booties J

Una, that #5 second set was going to the pool to watch
synchro, when I knew I needed to shed layers.
I was quite disappointed it ended up as a meh, because I’d wanted a
denim shirt for a while, and was pleased to find one in a dark wash. The lighter washes really don’t do much for
me. Unfortunately. I sure hope I can
find a way to wear it successfully!

And holy smokes… Marley!
I will read your post several times to digest everything you have
said. Thank you so much for taking what
was obviously considerable time with this.
To answer some of your questions - Yes, I do have broad shoulders J And am learning that v necks are my
friend. Boat necks and crew necks… NOT! Yes those are skinnies in #7. Just got them at Christmas, so glad they
work! See what I said above to Una about
#5 – total agreement. Oh, and a friend who I showed my Jan collection to also
suggested I stick with slim pants. I
always thought this emphasized my shoulders, made me look like a cartoon
character. Funny how one perceives
oneself isn’t it. Your comments are bang on regardless of where I'm "going", because they address what looks good on me. No apologizing!

Once again, a big thank you to all of you. Lots to think about, and react to. You rock!

Onward to February!

Hi Elizabeth! I'm so impressed with your outfits - and then on top of it, you managed to take pics, analyze the pluses and minuses, and then post them on the forum. I love threads like this because I learn so much from everyone who responds.
OK - I'm just going to spill my thoughts out here, without much thought as to order or organization, etc.
First of all - I think that you look best with color around your face - and IMHO this will continue to be true as you grow your hair out.
Second - I think that the outfits that have a narrow neckline/V-neck, as opposed to those that are wider or go out further on your shoulders are more flattering for you. I have broad shoulders - and I think(?) that you might too, and that is something that I've learned for myself.
Third - I think the horizontal stripes are not your best friend. (Sorry!) To me, they are making your upper body/shoulders look broader than what they actually are - and your upper body a little "boxy." That's what horizontal stripes do to me - but, I do still wear them at times - so, there ya' go! Hahahah - I'm not making any sense, am I?
Fourth - I am having a hard time seeing your pant hems in some of the pics, but at times they are looking not quite PPL. I may be wrong on this because, as I said, it is difficult to see the dark pants against the dark shoes.
Outfits that you are happy with:
With just a few exceptions, they all are pretty flowy, loose, unstructured styles. I'm assuming that that is the direction you want to go - since these are the ones that you liked.
#7 - I love the fit of the jeans. Are they skinnies? Whatever they are, I think you should wear them as much as possible because you look great in them! They are my favorite "bottoms" of the group.
Your "meh" outfits:
#1 - to me, its both the footwear and the length of the sweater. I cannot tell from the pic what the shoes are - but something sleeker, with a bit of a heel I think would improve this outfit. Also, if you scrunched your sleeves then the sweater would not be quite as "boxy" looking on you - however the length of the sweater is suspect - even with the sleeves scrunched it still may not feel good to you, but it's worth a try!
#2. - love! Just gorgeous - love the footwear!
#3 and 4 - to me the sweater doesn't quite seem to know what it wants to do. Is it oversized? Fluid? Body-con? I think the color is lovely - I'd try a larger size and see how you feel in it.
The window pane pants - love these! But, I agree with whoever suggested that you shorten them just a titch - and while you're at it, perhaps slim down the ankle openings. I have a pair of pants from Zara that are cut similarly to these and Angie has very gently prodded me to do that to them - which I will do, once I get back home!
#5 - well, there is nothing that makes me feel more frumpy than wearing a shirt over a t-shirt. I really have a poison eye for that look - so, my guess would be that, like me, you just don't feel like yourself in this outfit?
#6 - I already gave you my input on this on your other thread!
In general, I think that the pants that are a slim fit all the way to your ankles are more flattering on you, than the wide leg, or boot leg ones.
I'm trying to remember what you have said about where you want to go with your style - I realize that I may be all wrong about my suggestions, depending on what you are shooting for! If so, I apologize!

I echo what Suz said, Just to add, 8 is my absolute favorite here. It's cohesive, composed and flattering.

My least favorite is 5 in the second set which seems very unlike the rest of the pictures and seems like you don't love it either.

I think the turquoise sweater, while a great color for you, is a difficult shape - not quite fitted but not loose either. I wonder if that color in a different fit of sweater would work better for you?

My first impression was also high contrast is good for you. Black and white stripes and other high contrast patterns work really well. I also want to promote #2 from the mehs, and save the windowpanes. Stripes and contrast are your signatures and are working really well!

I'm glad that #2 in the meh category was actually meant to be a keeper. I thought it looked great!

My most favorite outfits are 18 and 20. But they're all good!

My least favorite is probably 13. I wonder what would happen if you added a necklace to this outfit? I feel like your head is cut off from your body a bit in this outfit...maybe something at your neck would connect things better and make them flow more?

I am wondering if in outfit 4 a different top would help with the proportions. My first reaction to this outfit was that the top seemed a little too short--but I'm guessing if you just untucked it, it might be too long or not structured enough? I like the proportions how you have them in outfit 12, so that the top is roughly 2 parts and the skirt is 1 part. That seems to elongate your torso and give you a smoother vertical line.

I agree with Sarah A about where your tops & bottoms "break". This isn't an issue with monochromatic outfits imo. Some of the outfits with scarves work well but I love some of your more streamlined outfits too. #2 in the meh group looks great but I understand if you don't feel good in it :)

I'm going to have to spend some time studying these later, but let me just say for now that whenever you want to look 20 ears younger, outfit #4 in the first batch is the one to choose! Holy cow! I don't know whether it's the super tall boots, the length of the skirt or your slim legs, but that one's a keeper!

Some great looks here. 7 and 12 are my favorites. 7 has a cozy yet put together vibe and 12 is fun bright colors. Th emeh outfits, I noticed that the accessores are not as strong as in the first set of looks. A scarf is tied up very close to the neck instead of draping down, or there's no large fun belt at the waist....although I do like those window pane trousers, perhaps remix them with a black blouse or other flowy style top?

You really do have a great set of outfits. My favorite of all is the window pane pants with the turquoise sweater. That one is so pretty on you. I'm sorry that it is a "meh" to you. In fact, I love that sweater in both iterations. The fit, the v-neck are super flattering. The thing I notice most about your "happy" outfits are the body skimming, waist surrendering fluid fits. 3,4,11, 12 and 16 are my faves. You wear the low slung belt so well. What I notice about the "mehs" are the tops are more substantial--1 and 5 especially obscure your figure. I think the textured stripes in 1 and the wide neck and straight hem make you look more square. The same goes for the shirt in 5.

Black and white an cobalt - very impressive and cohesive!

I wonder if the outfits you don't like have a lot to do with the lighter and/or less saturated colors? Even though you have some expanses of white in the first set, they are strongly color blocked with black. The turquoise sweater is gorgous, but the black/white scarf looks ... sort of unintentional? in the 1st pic and the jewelry in the second pic is perhaps not strong enough to compete with the sweater's fabulosity.

Wow seeing all those WIWs in one place makes it even clearer how advanced your style has become...

I see what you mean about the 4th piece--that really seems to make or break the outfit, and is missing or insubstantial in some of the "meh" ones.

My other observations may be heavily influenced by the browsing around I did on the Dressing Your Truth website, looking at their comments on "Winter" colourings... (it was a slow night in the ER, everybody stayed home and watched the game). Your "yay" outfits all have high contrast. And dark colours (black) and pure jewel tones. They echo the high contrast in your hair, and make your face stand out. The "meh" outfits are lacking that degree of contrast--some might be saved by adding it with your 4th piece at the neck, or by incorporating something else bright. The turquoise is a lovely colour, but is almost too soft for you.

That is what stood out to me (colour and contrast) although the proportion aspect is there too I'm sure (I do like the turquoise sweater better when semi-tucked).

Funny about #2 in the 2nd lot--I like it too. Well, my first thought was, "Why can she find those Black Watch pants and I can't?". But I do like that outfit, but your contrast near the neck is suboptimal to me. Maybe a bigger or brighter piece of jewelry? Cowls are hard to add to--I had a similar outfit on Saturday (dark floral jeans, navy baggy cowlneck) and it looked wrong until I figured out how to tie a cream-and-navy scarf below the cowl to work as that extra piece.

I will try to write more later, but for now, Brava! Great job. Before reading your analysis, I looked through the first set of pix, and I had noted that you seemed to do better with something up by your neck. So I'm glad we both came to the same conclusion! I hadn't thought of that in my own dressing; I will have to pay attention.

I just wanted to say something about the windowpane pants. Do you have a feeling for why you don't like them? Is it the length, or is it the pattern? I tried on a pair of ankle pants at BR the other day--the Sloans--and I found that I didn't like how they almost flared out by my ankle, which made me look stumpy. I wondered maybe if the legs had been more tapered at the ankle whether that would have created a better vertical line. So you might want to ask yourself if having them tapered would make you feel better about them. I do think the pattern looks extremely good on you.

Your outfits are so cohesive and your personal style comes through loud and clear. I'm impressed. If YLF were a training course, you'd pass with flying colors and be placed straight into the advanced version.

You pull off bright/black colorblocking very well, and it can be challenging. It works so well with your hair and the extra items you add to each outfit. I never go for that look myself, and seeing it on you makes me think I should try, though I'm not sure it would work as well on me.

I particularly like the looks with fluid button-downs (3, 4, & 10). The rolled sleeve length in 3 and 4 works very well on you.

Cross post... thanks Liz. Good observation about the pattterned bottoms. I don't think that's it, because I have worn them before, just not in Jan, and have felt fine. The window panes are definitely pushing my comfort zone though! Didn't help when my 10 year old asked if I was wearing pajamas to work...

And I do have more colours, just wasn't feeling them in January I guess. When I noticed on (about Jan 20) that I'd only worn something other than cobalt or turquoise once, I decided to keep up the theme

Yes, I think they would look better a little shorter, to show your ankle more (and yes, they would look nicer with the Okalas too). MaryK wore hers recently after shortening them a little, and I think that length would look good on you too (but yes, our climate is a bit limiting).

You passed!
I actually didn't mean to put #2 into that second set :). I did like that one, probably more in person than in the photo (which may be why I grabbed it by mistake). And I note that that one, with the cowl neck, has that neckline thing going on.

Very good observation about the crotch point cut off. I knew it was something, but was more looking for consistency in the "yays" than in the "nays", so hadn't spotted it. I have worn that sweater semi-tucked, and do like it better. Thank you for that. Looking at this one below (which actually doesn't show the "semi" very well) you can really see the difference between the 1/3 2/3 thing vs wearing it out, which gives more of a 1/2 1/2 body cut.

Ceit... shorten the windowpanes? Really? Is it the ankle strap that is making you say that? Because I didn't wear them with the Okalas, I wore them with more regular pumps - this was just what I had at home. Keep the pumps at work. Maybe I should pin them up and see what it looks like. This ankle pant thing is very new to me.

Thanks torontogirl, Ceit, Sarah, Aubergine and Suz. I really really appreciate the time to read, look and comment. Definitely some things to take forward.

My faves are 16 and 19. Your style is really coming together. I also like #3 in the second set. It fits with your theme. This color scheme is really working with your hair. I wonder if you will add more colors when you do the big chop .

Oh and one comment about the meh outfits is maybe you are uncomfortable in patterned bottoms?

What a cohesive set of outfits! Your closet is in great shape and you are looking wonderful! It's fun to see a month at once this way. And if you are separating "yay" outfits from "meh" outfits, that's going to pay big dividends. I don't think I had put it to myself that clearly (even though I was sort of doing the same analysis) so thank you for that articulation!

I know we're supposed to analyze before judging, but hey, I want to call out my faves! Those include: 8, 15, and 16 from group 1 and 2 from group 2!

So...how come #2 in set 2 did not feel fab, I wonder?

Sarah makes a good point about proportion -- it may be that you are unhappy with that "crotch point" cut off, so to speak. It sort of cuts you in half. As for the turquoise sweater, it truly is gorgeous on you in colour, but I wonder if you are uncomfortable with the welted bottom. For me, sweaters like that work better if they are faux or semi-tucked. Might be worth a try?

My first thought was that the first set have a little more drama than the ones you didn't like as much. I noticed a lot of high contrast in the ones you like, with lots of black and white and bright, bold colors, as well as simple but statement-y accessories (like the black belt with the silver buckle that made it into a few of them). I also noticed what Sarah mentioned about the top set having more flow to them than the second one.

I actually really like #2 in the second set, but it does seem lower-contrast and less dramatic/graphic than some of your favorites. I also wonder whether #1, #3, and #4 would feel more like "you" with a bolder accessory.

The one thing that stands out to me immediately is that there seems to be more fluidity and flow to your "yay" outfits. Also very few of your happy outfits break the top and bottom strongly just above the crotch point like your nay outfits almost all do. This is a great exercise

In the mehs, I think shortening those windowpane pants a bit will make you happier with them!

Wow, you really have a cohesive look down-pat in the first set. In the second set, I thought #2 looked awesome and as good as any in the first set. With the blue sweaters, I agree with your point that it just needed one more element - what about that long necklace you wore several times? Or even the scarf long rather than wrapped around higher? The turquoise is really nice on you.

#5 and 6 I think look nice but what I observe is they don't flow as well with the signature look you established in the first set ... #5 being much more casual with the looser topper, #6 being different in terms of color palette. Could that be why they felt "off" to you?

AKA the month of bruises… seriously, talk about black and blue!

In my thread about my style goals etc for 2014, Suz mentioned that she had found photographing and posting her outfits consistently for a month really helped her, and suggested I do the same. I do photograph every day, but often didn’t go back and actually analyse what I’d felt like etc, so I decided to step it up a bit. I probably should have posted here every week or so, but my life just doesn’t always have room for that. But I now do have all photos off the camera, and processed, so here we go.

I’m going to do this in two posts, to help keep things organized. So if there is only one here and you are reading, hold tight!

First are the outfits I was happy with. Observations:

In general, I seem to need a fourth element. Not just the bottoms, tops and a topper, but a scarf, belt, bracelet, boots, something else.

Outfits that are three pieces have all made it into the “meh” pile (second post).

I think I look better with something substantial at my neck. That can be in the form a scarf, a v-neck or blouse with skin showing, or jewellery. Something that breaks up expanse between my swimmers shoulders.

I’m really surprised my turquoise sweater ended up in the “meh” pile both times I wore it. I do love the colour. Thoughts? Is it the styling? I’ve also worn it semi-tucked, which perhaps I prefer. Is it the shape? Neckline?

That’s all I can come up with right now, and I really want to post this before February is over, so here goes. If you have anything you can add, I’d love to
hear it. I realize this might be a bit of work, so please don’t feel you need to!

Thanks all. Even without a comment in this post, the comments you make on others, and the posts you all make, have helped me enormously.

Oh, and this is a mixture of work and casual. As you'll see.
