I live 40 miles from Baltimore and drive to or past there many times a year. I've been getting updates from our Coast Guard son. Once the possibility of terrorism was pretty much debunked, his comment about the ship losing power was, "a lot of things had to have gone wrong all at the same time". Those container ships are such massive vessels. I heard some interesting commentary from an aviation lawyer, who was previously Undersecretary of Transportation, on C-SPAN today, concurring that this is a 5+&nbsp;year disruption to the roadway and port.&nbsp; For those unfamiliar with driving up and down the East Coast, a years-long disruption at the mid-point of the country's main north-south roadways is going to be a real driving hell. And Covid taught us all a lesson about the fragility of the supply chain, so losing access to such an important port is going to have many ramifications.<br />Horrific to imagine the experience of those workers who were lost. We were in the mountains in NEw Mexico, off grid, and we got a lot of unexpected snow so we decided to pack up the Airstream and head back down the mountain yesterday afternoon. When Jamie started up the truck, he heard the news and came to tell me. We didn’t get more until a couple of hours later when we regained cell service, but I had loads of messages and social media was full of the video. The video made me gasp and then tear up.</p> <p>I’ve driven over that bridge a hundred times or more, even though I never had much reason to travel on that part of the beltway. This bridge has been part of the Baltimore Beltway since the mid 1970s, and is major alternate route to I-95 when it is jammed. There are going to be a lot of traffic snarls to come. And of course, the damage to the shipping lane is huge. </p> <p>Mostly though I am so sad for the families of those workers who were not able to evacuate the bridge in time. Im glad more lives were spared by the quick mayday response, but those six lives are an awful loss. </p> <p>I could see the bridge in the distance from the window of my studio. And I could often see it in the distance from various places along the Chesapeake bay. It is a gaping wound to so many people I know, who have seen it from their homes every day for decades. </p> <p>Thanks, everyone, for the good thoughts. I'm on the other side of the bay from Baltimore, and avoid going there. Annapolis, Dover, and Salisbury are the biggest cities I'm comfortable with!</p> <p>These container ships are Huge though. Apparently it takes them 5 miles to slow down, so I really don't think there was much anyone could do, unfortunately. I really hope they let people work from home for a while, cause it's going to take a long time to rebuild (we've been waiting for a third span of bay bridge for decades). Plus I'm sure shipping and cruises will be affected for a long time too, cause Baltimore is a major port. </p> <p>I do cross the bay often to see FIL, and will definitely be giving the ships the side eye for a while!
