Good question, Mo- there was a time when I passed on dolman sleeves for this very severe reason: if have a dolman sleeve sweatter, you need a dolman sleeve coat, too:-)

I'm with Angie, I always buy my overcoats to fit over top of a blazer or leather jacket.

Mo, I think this light sweater should work fine under a regular coat. It's on the bulky big sleeved ones that create problems. I probably wouldn't wear it with a blazer because I am sensitive to that sort of pulling/ tightness, but if you are only wearing a coat on top it should be fine.

That looks pretty lightweight -- if your coats are cut tight you'll have trouble but if they are not snug you should be fine.

Kelly, I only buy coats if they fit over my jackets and leather motos. Otherwise there is little point.

Well, this is the sweater in question. I don't have any jackets specifically like Angie mentioned. Maybe I do need a cape/poncho or cocoon style now. Sheesh. It's always something.
I guess for today I'll just wrap a fluffy scarf around my neck a few times.

Kelly, just a dusting of snow, really. Since January we haven't had more than a few inches at a time.

I've lived in a cold climate for most of my life. The first thought when trying on outerwear is, "Will it fit over chunky knit sweater, blazer, 2 or 3 other layers, . . whatever?" It's not the time for bodycon look or any kind of close fit, that's for sure!

The next thing is to make sure the sleeves at least have a slippery lining. It's very annoying trying to get in and out of a coat if your sleeves are sticking. You end up like a little kid with her coat sleeves inside out

I haven't had any trouble provided the dolman-sleeve item is reasonably lightweight.

I always wonder how people in cold climates layer in general--like how they layer a coat over a blazer. I've been wearing my poncho over my big dolman sweaters. My long LE coat is the only thing that I can fit over a dolman sweater but it is kind of hideous and I "save" that look for outdoor sporting events pretty much exclusively. Great question--I'm interested to hear what others do!

Did you get a nice dusting of snow?

Capes, cocoon coats, dolman sleeve coats and oversized coats are good solutions.

So how do you guys manage to layer your regular jackets and coats over the new oversized, boxy, dolman shapes? I am thinking ahead to today's venture and realized this might be an issue. Maybe I need to purchase a cape lol!
