A comment about cropped and shrunken-look jackets above just reminded me of this: I finally put my olive green Smythe blazer in the donate bag a week ago. It was an almost $600 blazer (prices have really increased this past year) and I wore it faithfully every spring for about 4 years - maybe 5? . Maybe 4-5 times a year. So not even hitting that magical 30 mark. I imagined it as being a life-time classic, a true wardrobe investment, but you know, the cropped, shrunken look was not looking up-to-date to my eye and the fit was ever-so-slightly snug now (recurring theme here, too) so I finally put it out of it's misery in my closet. I don't really miss it. Too trendy of a cut. Anyways, I need to stop being on YLF today - good night

The trouble with jackets in our climate, is we only have a couple weeks a year we can use them-as strictly outdoor jackets. If they can be layered under coats, and are comfy enough to wear inside all day, they get more use.

I tried all of them on today and took photos. Even the holding zone. I have five in a pile to give away or sell. I may post some photos for perspective and feedback.

Thank you for all the replies and thought provoking remarks! (Again please forgive my inability to reply to every comment, but I’m on my phone as per usual.)

My laptop is STILL in Apple repair purgatory (long story, none of it my doing, but it is a two week saga and I cannot do most of the work I need to do until I have it back!), so I’m taking the opportunity to do some closet review, plus I have a pile of mending and repairs. It’s good timing as NAS gets me thinking about future seasons.

I’m trying on every. Darn. Jacket. In my wardrobe. Taking photos.

One observation. Some of those jackets are over five years old. I was a size smaller then. I can still wear them, as I rarely close jackets anyway, but I need to pay closer attention to how they feel. It doesn’t feel particularly good to put on a slightly tight jacket, and I am only willing to tolerate it for certain occasions, short periods of time, or for jackets I ABSOLUTELY LOVE. I need to get real about how these things fit me and their utility in my current life.

It sounds like your current grid for keeping/not keeping a jacket is, "they look fine when I try them on — flattering, and they
seem to work." But if that criteria is causing you to keep more jackets than you want to own, how about revisiting your grid?

Assume that all your jackets are in good condition, look flattering on, and seem to work (or you wouldn't own them!). Given that, what other factors would you want use to decide whether to keep them or move them on?

Why not post photos of ones you are not sure about? I remember you did this a while back with some leather jackets (I remember the bell sleeved one!) and Anchie did an interesting jacket review. I learned from both those exercises about what were current of classic designs and what was a fad or dated. I've been wondering myself, about current, new, and enduring jacket design for 2019/2020.

Will be reading with interest. Always in the same situation. Mind Over Matter doesn't work when it comes to "summer" blazers that are lined, for the swampy Philadelphia-area weather. And then I tell myself I can wear them in very early fall. Hah. Exactly how many days are there in which to wear jackets, compared to number of jackets.

I knew many of you would understand!

I have some jackets that are years old — going back to when I first discovered YLF, 8 or almost 9 years old. A really nice Theory leather and tweed cropped moto comes to mind. The distressed Muubaa leather jacket. Then there are things like metallic bomber from Zara that always seems a little too much bling when I go to wear it. The beautiful shawl front navy leather Vince jacket that I got when I turned 50, that now seems too conservative when I put it on. The super cropped metallic leather jacket that doesn’t seem to work with my wardrobe — until I put it with a cocktail dress for a special occasion.

The problem is, they look fine when I try them on — flattering, and they seem to work. But then when the time comes, I don’t reach for them to wear. A couple are in my holding zone from the last time I debated this, a year or more ago. It seems to be a recurring issue with me.

Jackets wear well so do last a long time. I also get over them before I wear them out.

I have always admired your jackets -but there may be some you are happy to let go of. I hope bombers aren’t dated as I have two (an easy fit on my shirt waist). I think some shorter blazers can look a bit dated (I have one that probably fits that) and overall there are less shrunken styles around. I do like a cropped jacket especially with a dress in summer.

I know what you mean, I don't wear a lot of jackets and they aren't particularly easy for me but I still hang onto them anyway. Definitely the cost factors in for me and the feeling that as soon as I let one go then I will want it for something. I love Gryffin's idea.

Janet - sharing a thought with my fellow jacket girl. Before letting go of any topper, think carefully about what outfits you wear it with or what outfit proportions. Some toppers, as you mentioned, are the perfect proportion for certain silhouettes - esp in dressy capsules. There are shrugs/bolero sweaters I did not purge until I found my cropped tux jacket. I would do an outfit creation session with any topper to see how it looks in context. If it's no longer high interest and you have a better piece that can fill that niche, then I don't think you will miss it. Anyway, that's my strategy for purging.

Barbara Diane, your last comment does resonate with me as much as anything. I see something new that I love and think, “but my jacket storage is already full.” If it’s full, but I don’t feel like wearing a third of it, is it working for me anymore? Time to get real.

YES. I asked myself that question about dresses. If I really got strict with it, there are two more that would go, because I’m more excited to wear the new ones.

I need to apply that idea to jackets. I tend to spend more on jackets (especially since many are leather), and that factors into my reluctance to let them go too. I donated one very cropped nice leather moto style jacket earlier this year, and I have no regrets. It’s harder for me to wear those super short lengths now when I’m a size larger than I used to be. Plus they don’t look terribly fresh to me anymore. But as soon as I let them go, the trends will swing back to them, I’m sure!

I am right there with you! I have the HARDEST time letting go of jackets for the same reasons! I own more jackets than any other item (which is another reason I struggle dressing for hot summers). And there are SUCH fab ones out there. I happily enable you to own many jackets...

In my last jacket edit, I looked at each one and asked myself, "Would I buy this if I were out shopping today?" And when that question didn't help, I came up with 3 possible occasions to wear each jacket and asked, "Would I be EXCITED to wear this look for that occasion?" That helped me cull a handful. Then I rewarded myself with one new one :D

I hope you will share your edit with us!

Oh, I completely understand, Janet! I am the same way about cardigans. Easy to shop for, I have a ton, and yet in a weird way precisely because of those facts they are harder for me to let go of. ???

I will be very interested to see how this jacket edit plays out for you. I am rooting for you!

The jacket shopping goddesses are on your side. At the very least, pass along a few to make room for a new few!

Last night my husband and I did a little impromptu closet organizing together (his work situation is making a total 180 degree change, as he is trading in his ranch wear for casual corporate again). I ended up eyeing my rack of jackets that runs the full length of my side of the closet. I feel like an edit may be in order, but I have a hard time letting go of jackets. Why is that? Maybe because they are one of my favorite things to shop for: i am usually a fairly easy fit in them, and they look better on me than, say, jeans or bottoms, which I agonize over when I shop. They’re fun and can add personality via that “third piece” to an outfit. But honestly, I have plenty of them, including some that are a few trends back — several bomber jackets, for example. Some I wear rarely but they seem like just the right thing maybe once or twice a year, so I hang onto them. For instance, a cropped leather jacket I hadn’t worn in years was just the right thing I needed for a cool evening over my fancy navy halter cocktail dress.

The fact that I enjoy shopping for jackets and find them relatively easily *should* mean I can give up old ones easier, shouldn’t it? Why is that very old and cool but not-quite-my-thing-anymore Muubaa distressed jacket still hanging there when I haven’t worn it in two years or more? I need someone to come here and help me get brutal on my jackets.

Then I may have to get that Veronica Beard red plaid blazer at NAS to up my game a bit.
