That one is lovely Glory, looking forward to seeing some pics of it on you. I have a Marks jacket that works great for all the elements but it is not nearly as stylish. Hope it works out for you.

I found the long sought after softshell jacket today. Quite unexpectedly as I was too early for an appointment I decided to jump into Marks and found this jacket which I got in black. It is not petite but does fit in the back which is where I was having problems. Plus as I am petite it is 3/4 on me. I will try it on again tonight and hopefully get a picture but here it is in the teal.
It will be perfect for this transitional weather, running errands, walking the dog. Even the sleeves fit.

glory- have you tried athleta? (they are a part of the gap, so i believe that they ship to canada without much issue). what i like most about the site is the number of reviews each item has, it makes it much easier to guess what will or won't work, and what size to order. i also recommend trying patagonia and lands end. they both excell at this type of jacket. (FYI patagonia has a reuse program, so they sell a lot of stuff that is preowned at a nice discount)

Land's End is a cinch, Glory. It's cheap or free shipping (depending on amounts, whether they have a special on, etc.) and if you do need to send it back it only costs $7.95. They work out the duties, etc. and you don't have to deal with any of that.

Their clothes are cut on the large side so keep that in mind.

Krista thanks - I had not thought of Cleo's as I have never actually been there. I just checked and they have some options.
Freckles - this is almost exactly what I am after - I see it as a cross between gear and trench (sort of). This one would be a great option but for the colour.
My hunt continues.
The quilted one is nice but maybe not as long as I would like it to be.

Cleo has 3/4 length soft shell jackets in black and red right now; there's also a really nice burgundy quilted jacket there that's 3/4 length. If I was a little more adept at using my iPad, I'd insert a link, but they're on the website right now!

Thanks Ladies.
I will try and rope a child into a pic tonite because the selfies just don't work well. The 3-5 jacket is pretty nice IRL except I am not sure about the inside belt thingy. I feel that might create a shortening look for me. I am just trying to be 5'4 LOL.
I have looked at Sail (thanks though), MEC, all the gear places, ordered from Lulu etc. Same problem with all of them due to style and me wanting 3/4 length. Eddie Bauer sells a softshell in petite which might work but then I have the shipping and duty again for something that is unlikely to work.
So I am revisiting the concept to maybe mid thigh - perhaps a peacoat in a colour. I will check out Target as it just opened here a week ago.

I would try it, Glory. I like the colour blocking. But you won't know for sure until you see it on. I do think a peacoat of some kind is another option. That's what I have for this purpose and it works great. A swing coat might make you feel too -- I don't know. Too something. I find swing coats tough to wear, myself, because I think they look better if you are a bit taller than I am.

I once got an amazing London Fog coat at Winners. It was a 3/4 length fairly boxy red raincoat on the outside, and a SHORTER more fitted black quilted jacket on the inside, and you could wear them separately or together. It was the most brilliant coat I ever owned for this purpose, because you could unzip the rain part and show the fitted part (so it didn't do what you say) and yet you had that fun flash of colour. Plus, it worked for many temperatures and conditions.

What about more of a swing style? The fit problem you describe sounds like you're having to size up too much to fit your torso. A swing style would fit easier through the middle, so you might be able to get your usual size with a better fit through the shoulders and length.
Something like these, maybe:

I need a visual Glory to help decide.
Have you given Target a try? I noticed some nice pea jackets in fun colours the other day. Another good store to try for this kind of stuff is SAIL. Don't know if you have one near you - but they specialize in sportive outerwear. Tons of selection, and a wide rang of price points.

I have been looking for a transitional softshell jacket for a couple of years. I I really had my heart set on a 3/4 length similar to pics 1- 2. It is for MOTG, walking, shopping, picking up kids etc.

After ordering too many to count, and visiting way too many stores I came to the realization I am too short and boxy. They just don't fit me well at all. I have to size up to get it to fit the torso but they are too long and big in the shoulders.

I want a jacket for running around, walking, picking up the kids but want it longer than a cropped or bomber.

Since I have now given up on the 3/4 (with 3 still left to return), I am wondering about something like this. It is from Jessica Simpson and is navy and black.
Thoughts or maybe some other recommendations?
