At 5' 3" you are on the cusp between regular and petite sizing. The jacket unfrumped showed (in Finds below) also comes in pastel blue, pink, and cream AND comes in Petites. The sleeves run long if that is a concern with Petites. I'm 5' 1" with super long trunk and super short legs so I understand your struggle. Petite sizing also tends to hit me better in the hips so is wider where I'm wide. The checked blazer below is a regular size but hits me at a good length probably because it is fairly structured.

Like kkards I’m into jackets made out of non-traditional jacket material. The stretch jacket (Finds below) is unlined, and feels like a sweater or athletic jacket, but looks ‘sharper’ - IMO, anyway!

I wear it without the zip-in dickey and pair it with everything from frayed jeans to dressy skirt, when a third layer is required. It is easy care. I throw it in the wash, and hang to dry!

My most used summer jacket is an older white linen bomber jacket that is fairly short and unlined. The length goes with dresses and wide pants.

Thanks for your feedback everyone, and for linking to Angie's article. I feel more confident in my instinct of going with shorter lengths. You've posted some great examples. I'm currently waiting for this Tiger of Sweden linen blazer that I ordered second hand, I am hoping it will pair well with all my jeans and white/cream tops and shirts. :)

I like Cutloose, Fenini and Flax for summer weight jackets. Cutloose and Fenini have boxy and shaped styles. Flax in my experience tends to be a more boxy fit.

I'm 5'4" with similar proportions (shorter legs, longer torso -- slightly) and while my hips are not especially wide, my thighs are curvy. I don't care for mid-thigh jackets on myself (love them on others!) With wide leg pants, I prefer to wear a shorter jacket. Or a longer (below knee) cardigan, though those are not particularly on trend at the moment.

I have found some of my jackets second hand. But there is a shorter jacket trend (as well as the oversize trend) so you can probably find some that work. Angie did a post on this: https://youlookfab.com/2023/02.....r-jackets/

I have two short lightweight summer blazers and I also got two cropped jackets this spring (a bit heavy for summer wear). I also wear denim jackets more casually. And I have a longer kimono as well. These all work with wide legs.

I have this very light weight jacket which is shaped into the body and a white denim jacket that are my casual summer jackets - usually one of them will work with what I am wearing.

You might look for a linen jacket in a utility shape. I need summer toppers to be light enough to carry in a large bag to pull out as needed. I wear unlined jackets that do not wrinkle or light weight panchos that can also be scarves ( that sort of weight and fabric.) good luck. You will find what works for you.

I don’t like super short jackets because I’m long- waisted, but have also found many jackets TOO long or, just hard to match right jacket and pants silhouettes with different items in my wardrobe.

I recently added this N+ Z jacket, which is lightweight ( though not breezy enough for very hot summer. It comes in a lot of colors, though they get sold out or are not repeated every year.

I think jacket lengths are so dependent on a variety of factors. It would be really helpful to see pics.

For example, I’m 5’7” but all my height is in my legs and I have a really short torso. But I have wide hips and saddlebags, so I tend to avoid jacket lengths that end at my widest point. I tend to find the most flattering lengths a little shorter that point, like higher hip, or distinctly longer, like mid thigh. When I do choose a jacket that hits the low hip, a curved or cutaway style helps a lot, as does an angled hem. It also helps that I rarely wear them closed. Straight-across hip-length jackets are generally not my friend. I know we have very different proportions in length measurements, but maybe since we share the “pear” tendencies, those cut details can be helpful as you search.

Thanks for the input guys! I guess my problem is that I want to avoid looking too dated, at the same time I don't want to compromise in regards to what suits my body. I do realize that it might just be that I need to get used to new silhouettes, and that always takes me some time.

Cardiff Girl - I am glad to know I am not the only one who is not a fan of oversized!

kkards - That is definitely along the lines of what I am looking for, thanks for the recommendation!

kinnick - I often see women my height look great in mid-thigh length jackets, but somehow when I try it myself it seems to drag everything down, and it just looks like I borrowed something from my dad's closet. However, I realize it might be in my head, so am willing to give it another go!

I've been browsing Pinterest to try to find what I am looking for, and these pictures of Caroline Issa were the closest I could find. I enjoy a double breasted jacket, but it could also be single breasted. Length below hip bone but above crotch is what I imagine looks best, but of course I could be wrong. Do you think something like that would work with current styles?

I am 5’3” and have found that a mid-thigh length jacket works for me. I think that might be because of the 2/3 ratio of the jacket to body length.

I think that a linen blazer for the summer is a great idea however l agree that it’s a hunt to find anything that’s not enormous and boxy.l have a different figure type to you but l also don’t suit oversized.l am sure that there are still some gently fitted not too long blazers out there somewhere!Good luck!Maybe someone on the forum can suggest some retailers in your area.

Hi everyone!

I am in need of a new lightweight spring/summer jacket, and I am finding myself at a bit of a loss. I currently only own one jacket, a light olive canvas utility jacket that is probably a decade old, and I am looking for something that is still somewhat casual but polished. For autumn/winter/spring I usually wear long trench coats, which seems to work well for with the current pant silhouettes that are wider or flared, but for jackets I am not sure what to look for. I was picturing something like a linen blazer, but everything I can find nowadays is so long and wide! I feel like that style might have worked with skinny pants, but paired with wide leg pants I feel very dumpy in a thigh length jacket. For reference I am 5’3, and pear shaped, with short legs/long torso. I know I could go for something cropped, but I am slightly self conscious about my curvy butt, so for the time being I am sweating in my trench coats! Any advice for what jacket styles I could look for?
