After reading this thread, I decided to make an appointment with a JCrew personal shopper. I figured that 20% off was worth it. I managed to knock my camera off the table when I was taking photos of what I bought and now it doesn't work -- so photos will come later.

The personal shopper at my JCrew asked several questions about what I was looking for and my style when we made the appointment, but they were fairly general questions. When I arrived at the store, she had pulled out several items, but she suggested that I walk through the store and pick up things that I thought I would like.

As I was there trying on clothes, her suggestions became more specific for me. I tried on everything she brought and went out a couple more times to look through the store. It was great to have someone particularly paying attention to me. She continually brought me different sizes and other colors to try on. As I began to narrow down my choices, she was someone to talk through the decision. I don't think she had any special training but we had a similar body type so she understood what I was saying about different pieces.

I think what really helped is that I reviewed Angie's tips for my body type and had a specific list of the kinds of things I wanted (tops, cardigans, denim skirt), which helped me stay focused.

I think I got some good pieces -- hopefully you'll get to see them soon -- and at a discount. It turns out that JCrew has a student discount of 15% and I was able to combine that with the 20% personal shopper discount for a total of 35% off. That's a good deal!

Ana, thanks for the information. I've set up an appointment with the personal shopper at my J Crew. I've worked with her before and like her. I don't go until next Tuesday because they're getting in a new line that day so she suggested I come in then. I'm sure I'll post an update then.

Hope things work out well for you Marianne!

Thank you for the detailed answer, Ana! I stopped by J Crew the other day to check things out and I am definitely interested in a few items. I will give it a shot.

Hi Marianne! Sorry for the late response.

My experience with the J. Crew personal shopper has been really great. Each store has one personal shopper per store (I'm not sure but larger stores might have two), and they are hired for that specific position. I'm sure the shoppers vary depending on personality, but the PS at my J. Crew is wonderful. She's very honest and does help me with choosing colors and accessorizing things. Because I have worked with her whenever I've shopped (which has been often), she is familiar with my lifestyle and my personal style, so her suggestions are always good (she even remembers things I've bought in the past so can suggest new items to work into my existing wardrobe). She is also very honest and good with fit, too.

Another nice thing about my personal shopper is that she always notifies me about special store events, when the store is having a major sale, and also she lets me know when the store gets an item that I have seen somewhere and asked about (online or in a magazine), so I can come see it in person.

These are all things that have built over time because I've worked with her a lot. My advice would to definitely try it out. Because most of the benefits come from working the personal shopper over time, I'd just see if you like her and your personalities meld. Be really honest about what your lifestyle is like, the type of clothing you generally wear, your clothing needs, etc, so she can start to build a profile for you and make suggestions that are helpful in building your wardrobe. She'll probably also show you some things that might be out of your box a little. It's up to you whether you want to try it or not. I always try everything, because sometimes I am pleasantly surprised (my personal shopper Lauren was the one who suggested I get the yellow flower belt when it went on sale and it's one of my favorite accessories now).

If worse comes to worse and for some reason you don't enjoy your experience, you at least get a discount for your troubles, which is great (J. Crew has a lot of nice things in right now). But I definitely say give it a try.

Hope this helps a little! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Dani, I was wondering about that too. I don't really have high expectations for them, but if they can help me choose between 2 colors or 2 styles, that would be a plus... as long as they aren't pushy. Check your email for the offer, but like I said there doesn't seem to be any special codes (and it says you can share with a friend).
Thank you Sarah!

Very interesting...I'll have to check into this. My only concern is the capability of the personal shopper. Does anyone know if they go through extra training because some of the sales girls in my J Crew don't impress me (advising me that my pants are a good length when they aren't PPL).

Susan, good luck with your stylist meeting! I hope it goes well and helps you to sort things out.

Sarah, I got an email with this offer. It applies to purchases of $100 but that's easy at J Crew There is no promo code, supposedly you just call and make an appt (or it looks like you can do it via the site).

I met with our JCrew personal shopper when I went shopping with Ana and Patience. I'm going back to see her today! There are so many benefits to a personal shopper. Mine is not pushy at all and has very good advice. Definitely check it out!
Where did you see the info on the 20% discount?

That sounds like tons of fun! I recently contacted a fashion sylist in Chicago and am hoping to make a trip up there this fall. It is quite expensive, but if it keeps me from purchasing a bunch of random items and then hanging them in my closet seldom worn, I think it will be worth it. If I were you I'd take my camera and have the shopper take pics of you in the different outfits. Have fun!

No idea, but you reminded me that months ago we ran into some old friends of my DH's, and the wife works at JCrew as a personal shopper. She was trying to get me to come in. I might have to look into this....

J Crew is offering 20% off if you schedule an appt with a personal shopper before Aug 29. Since I've been eyeing a couple of things there I thought it might be worth a try. Does anyone have any experience with it (Ana wink wink)? Is there a standard procedure? I am really not going to buy more than 1 or 2 things and I wouldn't want to be pressured. I guess it also depends on the person you get...I guess I am answering my own question here. Any thoughts?
