So I bailed. Got the measurements from J Crew for 3 different sizes but chickened out. I was afraid that coat is made for the slimmy-slimmers and thought I might look a bit like a stuffed sausage! Onwards and upwards!

I'm a 6 in J.Crew, 8P in their petite sizes. I just bought a lady day coat and the 8P fits perfectly. The sleeve length is right on and I'm so glad I don't have to get anything altered.

Good luck!

Order over the phone and explain your concerns , she may be able to waive the no return policy. Make sure she puts a note in the system and be sure to note her name and date and time. They have done this for me and I did end up returning the item. Great customer service!

Not sure your shape, but I can't wear the lady coat in any size. Won't accommodate my chest. Well, if I size up to fit my chest then the proportions are all wrong everywhere else. Too bad, it is cute.

Agree 100% with the advice above (and thanks for the tip, Suja!). As a rule I find I take a slightly larger size in Lady Day coats -- in the schoolboy blazers I'm at the top of the 6P range, but in the Lady Days, I need 8P for thin layers and even own a 10P to go over blazers. Not sure if that's due to my shape or the Lady Day size range in general.

Wow Suja those are great tips! J Crew sent me their size recommendations and let me know they could send me the measurements too. I didn't think to ask for the sleeve measurement too - great idea! I'm just on the cusp of petite - 5'4". I often buy petite coats/jackets because I need a larger size due to my girth which then makes sleeves too long. Thanks for the fits details - that helps a lot.

If you politely ask if you can return an item when placing a phone order, they sometimes agree to not make it final sale. I have a petite lady day coat and they generally run a little short in the sleeves, even for petite sizes so check the sleeve measurements carefully. It is fitted on top and at the waist but has room for hips. It is a great coat! I love mine.

Great idea! Why didn't I think of that I've talked to J Crew associates before about wide calf boots and floppy straw hats and they are always very helpful! Thanks ladies!

Great idea -- call customer service. I find their sizing really variable in some things, so it might be worth it to you.

gosh, I think that's a tough one. I've found JCrew coats to be somewhat variable. For example, I had to size up on a toggle coat this fall. But I've never tried the lady day coat, so I don't know how it fits. You don't want to mess this one up, as it's a big investment. Maybe the customer service can provide measurements?

I'm loving all things dark blue right now. The last outfit from the post on blogger Mary was stunning. I've also been looking back at seersucker and saddles and am a sucker for her look! I looked at this coat from J Crew and found it on sale. The problem, as you all know, is J Crew doesn't accept returns on sale merchandise so do I take a chance on size? I'm normally a 10 in most clothing. At J Crew I'm a 10 or medium except for a cardigan, which is a large. I need a petite coat for the sleeve length. Should I buy a petite 12 or a regular 10 and pay to have the sleeves altered?
