The struggle is real. I miss my Birks and Vionics, especially sine I'm still recovering from a back and hip injury. One thing I've done is to get some Orthaheel insoles for my boots (the same company as Vionic, more or less). I think Birks makes insoles too.

i hear ya sista. I have two pairs, white Arizona's inspired by Lisa P, and the Salina's in a subtle metalic gold, I love the more delicate look of the Salina's - inasmuch as any Birk can be delicate! When the weather turns I wear my danskos, until it is icey. Danskos are my Birk of the winter. The Dansko's I have in black, but I think I'll get the burgundy, too. I have to research the difference between the professional and the professional xp. I used to find both Birks and Danskos to be ... utilitarian and not fashion forward. Birks are maybe fashion forward, but my feet love love love both.

Thanks, everyone! So glad I'm not alone!

I love the idea of getting the slip on ones and wearing them for winter. The pair I have are the ones with a toe separator, so that wouldn't work so great with socks.

I think a second pair of Birks is in my near future ... ;)

I LOVE my Birkenstocks - I wear no other shoe for the entire warm season ... Mind you, this is a shoe I swore I would never wear ... Just goes to show, never say never! Hmm, I might need to by a non-thing style pair to wear in winter ....

Birkenstock Arizonas, all summer, every summer. The indoor pair, the daytime pair, the fancy pair..

Wearing my Asics Gel Kayano's for now but even as the casual dresser I am that's hardly a satisfying alternative.

A lot of folks I know rock the Birk Boston clogs when it gets too chilly for open toes. And Haflinger clogs are made of boiled wool and have a similar cork footbed...

they make shearling clogs, too. I occasionally steal the pair that belong to my child, but only for yoga to-and-fro. They are not pretty. But they are cozy.

Get another pair, such as Arizonas, and wear socks with them. I’m not kidding. They’re best with hand knit socks, but you don’t have any, then any interesting socks will work. These are all from Nordstrom.

Birks don’t work for me, and I welcome the end of sandal season, but I understand what you mean as far as having a new standard for comfort. I really am not enjoying wearing my heels over 2” anymore, or anything else I can’t spontaneously wear to walk all day. Sigh! An edit is in order.

But wear your Birkies with socks - AT LEAST at home. My Dutch family does - and have been doing so since the '70s.

My friend’s doctor (can’t remember which specialist/reason as she has a few painful back, knee, fasciitis etc issues) told her to buy Birks and wear them inside as a therapy. Sometimes she will wear mine at my place because she arrives for a visit wearing other shoes and realizes she needs the relief (it’s fine, we are very old friends functioning somewhat like sisters).

Weeeell, this summer I bought a pair of alpaca inner soles at a farmers market, and put them inside my rubber boots. Today is cold, wet, and rainy so I put on my wool socks bought in Ireland and those rubber boots, and my normally cold feet were in heaven

I can relate. Hope you will manage to find some comfortable boots and closed shoes. I have learned to buy my boots so roomy that they allow me to keep a woolen sole inside them and to wear at least a pair of thin wool socks and, if needed, also a thicker pair of wool socks AND still be able to move my toes--all this adds to the comfort. By the way, I love wearing my Birks as home shoes in the colder months. (Can wear them with nylon, cotton or wool socks, dependant on the temperatures.)

This is my 4-year old's problem as well. He's worn sandals all summer and outgrown his sneakers. I went to buy him new ones and he tried on about a dozen pairs and complained that they were all too tight. I finally just bought him a pair. I'm pretty sure they weren't all too tight, but he's just not used to wearing sneakers after a summer in comfy sandals.

For me it is VIONIC, but otherwise, yes! The comfort of knowing I can walk through anything the day throws at me, without worry for aching ankles or knees, always sets my day up right.
