Unstudied is a fabulous word, and I do agree there's a healthy dose of the unstudied when it comes to RATE.

I like unstudied because I find in it a sense of proportionality. Things are not given more attention than they're due.

Effortless is different to me. Effortless to me is a certain smoothness... *smooth-flowing-ness.*

What a great discussion topic! I don't know your style that well, but the word is a great descriptor. I'm still searching for my defining style, and those descriptors are helpful. I don't think "unstudied" would apply to me, I wear too much makeup and jewelry lol

Perfect word--wish I'd thought of it first! I was doing some online shopping earlier tonight, and admiring things which, on the young models wearing them, conveyed just that sense of careless natural elegance--so appealing. But when I imagined myself in the same clothes, I realized that on me they would not have that insouciance; in fact, they would look forced, because I would feel uncertain and uncomfortable in them, if that makes sense. So that "unstudied" effect, I think, may depend more on the perfect match between the clothes and the wearer, than any particular clothing style. And don't you find that what feels right in this way can vary from season to season--or even from one day to another? But you know when you get it right: somethings clicks.

Wow. I think I need a Master's degree to understand this thread. But I love it. It's like intellectual art - words being shaped into multi dimensional forms... So much wonderful-ness to ponder...

But my simple answer is that I love your new descriptor and think you should run with it, and not worry about finding any more. If you are unstudied, you should get to free license to wing the rest, otherwise then wouldn't you be... studied?

I think unstudied implies nonchalant, whereas effortless implies easy. Not sure if that clarifies or muddies.

Michelle's comment makes sense too. It would be a huge effort for me to look completely polished, but I have friends who would have no clue how to be RATE without feeling like they'd just given up.

This is fascinating and has me pondering all sorts of nuances. I tend to agree that unstudied and effortless have subtle distinctions. I'm going to approach it from the opposite end of the spectrum.
For me, polish is paramount. So taking the time to properly blow-dry my hair after I wash it and pull on a non-RATE outfit is simply a part of my day. This is how I naturally behave, and although people can see that I've taken the time to be properly dressed and coiffed (made some kind of effort, as it were), I don't think I convey the sense that I've spent three hours primping to achieve this look. Now, if I were to consciously pursue a more RATE effect, that would require a great deal more effort. Fighting my instincts to create a faux-bedhead look would be the very opposite of unstudied, even if the results would look more so. And knowing my usuaal style, it would definitely seem more contrived and effort-based than my usual, more polished approach.

Perhaps effortlessness has to do with the conjunction of the desired look and the instincts that led you to pursue that look in the first place?

Or maybe I should go to bed now? :)
Your reply

I like your thinking, Deb. It makes me want to define "unstudied" as a look of unaffected naturalness that seemingly comes from the core of knowing what works for you and what doesn't.

But, as a style descriptor, I think the word "seemingly" is important. Like all other styles, when "unstudied" becomes a goal, then there is effort--just like there is in the careful construction of a de-constructed and distressed pair of jeans. It can take an army of stylists and hairdressers to create that perfect RATE look on a celebrity and I think achieving a STYLISH version of "unstudied" falls into the same category.

Una helped me understand the concept of RATE when she coined the term a few years back, and now I'm eager to see how Elisabeth works with the idea of "Unstudied".

Ok, I have had time to think about 'unstudied'. When a person has studied a subject for a long time whatever they studied becomes second nature. Garden design, interior design, art, music, philosophy, all of these become a part of the individual. It becomes part of their core and they are able to use their acquired tool without trying. To me, this is 'unstudied'.

So unstudied is the effect and unrelated to the actual effort involved, correct? As the dubious holder of the title "thrown together" I have sometimes questioned what it really means to be effortless, when, indeed, much background effort has been made. But effortless, thrown together, or unstudied at the moment of execution - that may actually be part of it. Perhaps it is subconscious dressing? Ok, sorry, perhaps I didn't get enough sleep.

I like "unstudied." To me it means perhaps a bit of artsiness that effortless doesn't quite reach. I have a friend who alway used to look casual but perfect. Matched, ironed and sprayed. I used to think she'd look so much better if she fluffed her hair a little and wore some interesting shoes. Much to think about here.

Angie: yes, I think 'unstudied' (not 'understudied') and 'effortless' are similar, but I also think you're right in suggesting that there is a slight nuance. To me, 'unstudied' implies a certain amount of messiness...no, that's not the right word, exactly. I'll think about it.

It's certainly true that one can look perfectly neat, tidy and polished, and also effortless. Some people are built that way, and it would be artificial for them to dress otherwise. For them (and come to think of it, you're one of them!), polish is effortless. For me, a touch of bedhead is effortless.

Of course you can have one word, Elisabeth. Although, Effortless conveys the same message as Unstudied. Or maybe not. Hmmmm. I wonder if Unstudied conveys a more RATE effect, whereas Effortless can go either way?

And does one ever want to look like you took the effort to look the way you do? That's a great topic for a blog post, and will be exploring that another time.

Staysfit -- yes! Good idea. From now on I will think 'unstudied' every time I get dressed. Maybe I've been doing it unconsciously already.

Gaylene -- hahahaaaaaaa

Actually that would work for me too, only swap 'senior' for 'middle-aged woman'. ;-)

Una -- I agree that RATE overlaps with unstudied, and also that for you (and for me) those things are truly authentic. I have to work hard to look smooth and polished -- on those rare occasions where polished is required -- and I have to do a lot of touch-ups throughout the day or evening, too. :-)

Ummlila, lol! It would be 'mechante et perspicace', although in the sense of the beware of dog sign, it probably means 'mean and alert/perceptive' more than evil.

Now Gaylene is making me think my personal behavior description should be like what's on my (French) hound dog's beware sign: Méchant et perspicace. I forget how to feminize words in French 30 years after my last class but I may be evil and shrewd nonetheless.

Maybe I can come up with a style descriptor, too.

I like yours, BTW, Aziraphale, after hijacking your topic. It conveys a great deal, but is not limiting.

Love it. I aspire to this as well, though I never thought of it that way. I think RATE has a bit of seeming unstudied, whether it is or not. Like bedhead. Although I tend toward authentic with both RATE and bedhead - there's no artifice there!
