Elly, I'm so sorry. How rotten! I know you can't do anything about the length, but I'm wondering if you can at least tell your hair stylist what you dislike about your current cut and see if she can help you get closer to something that will be flattering - especially as you'll be growing your hair out.

I have trouble with headbands and hair accessories too - which is why I keep my hair short! I've found exactly two harder headbands that don't hurt my head and will probably wear them to death - but I still can't wear them all day or else I end up with a headache at my temples. The grippy headbands slip off unless I secure them with clips over & around the band.

What works best for me is to pull my hair back with several of those snappy hair clips and to clip one over the other in an X shape to keep the clip in place. That's the only way I've found that I can keep them from sliding off of my slippery, straight hair!

I hate it when hairdressers go rogue!!
Maybe it has to do with the BAD lighting they have in all salons!!!!
I don't envy you your grow out time Elly!!!

Thanks ladies-- unfortunately I cannot kept the "hard" type headbands on either. I have enough issues with head pain and migraines and the ones that are tight enough to stay on give me welts. I had surgery to remove a tumor from my head as a small child, and as a result a lot of the bony projections that other people have on their skulls don't exist on me and my skull itself has some deformation, which seems to be the reason that headbands slip off so easy.

I actually have a very small head for an adult!

Someone once suggested Bondi bands or something similar and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them?

So sorry.

You mentioned having worn a pixie previously...would this be a good time to just bite the bullet and go shorter? It would solve the "I can't pull it back when I exercise" problem, and pixies can be so fab.

Oh Elly, I'm sorry, it's awful when this happens - I still remember (and it was about 20 years ago) having a discussion with my hairdresser about layers, and then her chopping about 5 inches of hair _off_ altogether (rather than adding some layers). It made me cry :-(

But the best thing about hair is it grows - in a month or so it will look different. Sending virtual ((hugs)) to you.

Wow, that is just rotten luck! Did you tell her how disappointed you were in the cut? When this has happened to me, my stylist tried to make it right, however she could.

As for headbands, you might try the ones with the combs like these. Also, make sure you're buying headbands sized for adults. Small headbands designed for children pop off. (What can I say? I was attracted to the pretty headbands in my 7yo daughter's arsenal. I just can't pass up rhinestone encrusted accessories, lol.)

Tarzy-- I'm sorry that your having hair ick too! It is the pits. I'm no curly hair expert, but I hope you can put enough goo in yours to flatten out any afro/triangle of doom affect!

I'd love to do that to mind, but the opposite is the problem and if I tried to give it volume I'd end up with Texas hair--- I tried, and my dog kept looking at me funny!

Thanks ladies---

I'm a bit torn. I think the cut she did give me is technically executed fairly well (although it may have been overlayered in some places and a bit underlayered in the very front).

However, I don't think it is a very good cut ON ME. We'd talked about keeping it two inches longer than my collar bones and adding some face framing layers and layers through the bottom so it would flip up a bit at it hit my chest and shoulders. This woman cut my hair like that for several years maybe two years ago. She has an excellent memory and we discussed it thoroughly.

I ended up with a fairly short very layered shag. It is cut "right"if she was cutting a shag, but I didn't want a shag and it isn't flattering on me. I find it she cut too much of the front of my hair the length of my jawline which makes it look very short, the back is shorter than the sides (almost like a wedge?). The layers around my face are sparse and it looks heavy, while the back has so many layers the longest part looks and feels very thin (and I have issues with thinness to begin with between past hairloss my hair is just beginning to recover from and because it is very fine).

Honestly, I feel like it is pointing out the thinness of my hair since you can see through the bottom layers but I'm not sure I'd want to cut them off into a jawlength bob, and adding more layering my only make the thinness worse. I have a square face and a strong jaw and it isn't very flattering.

She knows I don't blow dry unless I have a pixie, but it looks choppy and conservative at the same time. I always go edgy or very natural.

Overall, I'm dissapointed because it doesn't look like me at all, and it isn't doing my for my face or my hair.

I'm still upset because I can't pull it back since I workout at least 3x a week, am out in the wind and cold in CO a lot, and sometimes have to have my hair back at work. This was something we talked a lot about! Does anyone have any recommendations for headbands? I don't have much hair to begin with and that plus my head shape makes them almost impossible to keep on. Thin, thick, silicone grippy, they pop/slide off. Bobby pins and snap barettes don't stay in either.

I would like to say that it was because of the wigs for kids thing, but she cut off close to 14" of hair and only got about 10 of it into the ponytail. You only have to have 6 to donate. My hair is baby fine, which they tend to use for young kids, so length isn't that important.

I'm also not one to freak out about haircuts or the length thing- this is the second time in just over a year (like two months over) that I have cut hair that was down below my brastrap (about 13" the first time).

I have a job interview at the end of the month (yay!). Before the long straight hair was a little co-ed, but now I'm looking a little bit like my aunt that teaches sunday school and wears a lot of floral jumpers.

Deep breath! Hair grows for most of us, but maybe the kids will get a few more inches from your donation. Having been through this a few times, it seems that when a hairdresser is wacking off a few inches to match what needs to be donated, it doesn't always go as planned. Whatever has been done, can be adjusted and it WILL grow! Just remember that your bad day is bringing a good day to someone who really needs it!

Ack! I had something similar happen a couple of months ago - we agreed that we'd cut the length to "just below the collar bone" - and when it was done, it really didn't seem like what we agreed on - it seemed way shorter than that.

In the end, I could still put my hair back, and even though it didn't look like it at first, it really was collarbone length after all. For me, it was just the shock of something different.

Have you tried pulling it back yet?

Also - there's a chance that you might like it much better tomorrow or the next day. I was horrified with my own recent "shorter than I expected" cut, but the very next day, it seemed kind of *fun.*

In the meantime, if you had long hair in the first place, it's likely that your hair grows really fast. You might be surprised at how quickly it grows back.

Oh, how frustrating. I'm so sorry to hear you've had a bad haircut experience. I've had this happen before too. Here's what you do: if you don't like how it looks, go back and get it reshaped without any additional length being removed (i.e. she'll need to cut some more layers into it). If you don't trust the stylist who scalped you, you could always go to someone else. For exercising, you need a stretchy hairband to hold your hair back until it grows in enough to pull it back.

If you still reeeeeally don't like it, you can get through the awkward phase with the help of some cute hats.

This is a WTF moment. It's always bad when a transaction doesn't work out. It's worse when it's *on your head.*

I suppose there's no point asking if it looks good?

Also, maybe you can do ponytails or wear a handband or kerchief on your head? I have very short hair, and I always wear a shmatte on my head when I work out so sweat doesn't run into my eyes (or ears - hate that!).

I just got back from a haircut. I've been using this woman for years with good results. Today she cut 4 inches more off my hair than we agreed on. I couldn't see what she was doing as my hair was quite long, so she had it pulled back behind me to do the initial rough cut.

We agreed on cutting 1-13 inches off-- 10 for wigs for kids to donate, and then a few more to give it some shape and layers. It was supposed to be down below my collar bones. She cut it too short to begin with, and then cut the front really short and heavy.

It hasn't dried completely yet ( I had to wash, the styling aide she used is giving me a migraine-- hair still smells like it after a shampoo) but I am not happy.

I'm not going to be able to put it back off my face for exercise or work.
