I really admire your ability to objectively assess the response your image is getting in this context and willingness to adjust it even though that adjustment isn't completely natural to you. You have a really good attitude.

It seems like you may have a solution already and I'm hoping positive feedback from the target group is coming soon!

Ginger, that is a brilliant idea. Yes, I checked and the seller also does custom work. Her prices look very reasonable, too. Probably I could order at least a skirt or two, and one pants. Thank you!

Would that Etsy seller (or another) be willing to make some custom tango pants for you? In my experience Etsy sellers (at least the domestic single-person sellers, and not a few overseas) are willing to consider custom work. Those are AMAZING and I want you to have them. Like Rachy, this is totally eye-opening for me. I think they would be a lot more "you"

The pants on your easy link are amazing! Good luck in finding something that fits the dance-class environment, and also feels like "you". Is it worth looking for brands you know on eBay or local sell/swap/buy sites?

Hi Mochi --

Good for you. I think your instincts are right on. Great ideas upthread; hopefully the YLF dancers will weigh in, too -- I'm sure they have some great ideas for practicewear too.

They're are a couple of well-known/reputable online discount dance retail places. Maybe check there, too? I'd consider leggings and a knee-length sheer poly skirt (typical ballet practice wear). Floaty but practical.

Our local dancewear retailer has a house brand that goes to XXL. Most of my ballroom classmates wear their practice skirts at least occasionally. And Capezio's XL fits size 16/18 me. But, man, tango is a whole 'nother scene, isn't it?

Also while I think the Poema tanks are lovely, I don't want to go sleeveless. So some nice stretchy tops with cap sleeves or something like that. I guess even a nice solid t-shirt could work with a skirt.

Well-observed about the pants, ladies. Here are some very common tango styles:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/2.....=related-3

https://www.google.com/search?.....GM%253A%25

http://www.tangoleva.com/pants/pt5292/pt5292li.gif

etc

Harem pants might work very well.

Anything on Etsy that is geared toward actual tango dancers is hard for me to find my size...I will confer more with my teacher, and also try to find similar things cut a little larger than typical.

Here is some gorgeous and pricey boutique tango clothes. It would never come in my size, but just to show you what kind of fabrications and design is seen as ideal for women dancers. http://poemaclothing.com/

Maybe you could also try thrift and consignment vintage shops? Among my late mom's stuff, I found a cotton gored midi skirt from the '40s or '50s that would swish plenty but has an uneven hem that drives me nuts so I have to mark and re-hem it by the time the weather warms up.

I think the Ross spring dress event is on now (or has been for a week or two)? If you don't want to spend much but want to look at a whole bunch of casual to semi-dressy dresses at once, that might be worth a peek.

It seems ironic. Just when I feel in my stride and like I've figured out my style, I wear a slightly toned down version of my new fun look to my tango practice and after three years of being in this environment, it suddenly hits me how this is not the best clothing option for that activity.

Yes, technically I can move well enough in it (I'm talking loose boyfriend jeans and a slouchy Eileen Fisher t-shirt), but image-wise I just came to realize it is not helping me in this kind of clique-y or at least insular group of dancers, most of whom I don't know. I have my small group of friends whom I can rely on to dance with no matter what I look like, but I feel it's possible I'm not projecting the right image to make inroads and get to know more people. There are many more women than men, usually, and a lot of younger women, and in general the clothes, even if casual, are more "feminine" and can even be fairly dressy. (At a social dance, which is called a milonga, it would absolutely be dressy--the practices don't have to be, but many women like to wear a floaty dress or skirt to showcase their legs, and for the visual effect of the skirt swishing around.)

I have my tiny milonga capsule of nice, wearable, semi-dressy dresses which I can always add on to if necessary, but I'm probably good with that. But now I have to go and buy a couple of the appropriate type of skirts (obviously not pencils--they need to allow movement), which I just don't feel are "me" that much...and some tops to go with them. Just a couple. But it makes me feel like I will be stocking up on uniforms. I guess that in a way I will be.

My tango teacher, who's also a very close friend, is advising me to go to TJMaxx. I'm going to start there.

Anyway, done with my rambling observations!
