I don't even really get the premise. As an historian, we are living in a postmodern world, so why the emphasis on modernity? I kinda don't get it.

I know, right? Maybe they were so afraid of being accused of appropriation that they decided to go for straightforward erasure instead.

Malice, stupidity, etc etc.

You are so so right about parkas and anoraks and ponchos and kimonos and other ubiquitous non-western styles. That really comes off as deeply ignorant. Not exactly what you want in a museum.

ETA: Please ignore the mistakenly attached find, folks!

rachylou, I noticed the same. The other thing I noticed was that the non-Western items they chose were items that would be immediately recognised as specific to certain ethnicities, (sari, salwar kameez) noticeably exotic (tabi boot, cheongsam) or religious signifiers (kippah, hijab).

Conspicuous by their absence are non-Western forms which are ubiquitous and therefore part of the fashion designer's vernacular. Good examples would be parkas and anoraks, which are both still recognisably drawn from their original Inuit forms. And I can't for the life of me think why they've chosen to exclude ponchos and kimonos from this list.

The more I think about this, the more it upsets me.

I'm seeing plenty of fashion victims here in Punta Cana, but I know why. Latina women generally wear what's "de moda," and brands are very important. They love to shop in Miami and Orlando.

Ok. No, already looked at the links. Hehe. I'm not sure about the match between items chosen to explore the question and the question. I sorta see it, but I sorta don't. I see some items with quintessence (like Levi's) and some which are staples/basics (like kippot) and some which are iconic (like Air Jordan's*). I mean, I can understand asking if these are modern and if they will continue to be. It's just such a massive array. You could do a show on each of these subsets.

And then you have the question itself: Will clothing continue to be the subject of fashion? I rather think one's tech has replaced the role of clothing in fashion to a large extent. I don't look to see what a twenty year old is wearing first. I want to see their phone!

*[correction: it was the Nike Air Force that's in the show... which is completely unmemorable to me]

In view of our recent lively debate on the topic of cultural appropriation, I believe this is relevant to our interests:
