I was 76 kg a month ago and want to lose at least 10kg, but I'm not in a hurry. I'm about 74kg now.

Sarah - I am doing it by changing my lifestyle gradually - adding a new 'habit' every week or two:

Week 1 & 2 - concentrating on drinking a pint of water before breakfast and a pint of water at lunchtime, making sure I have at least 5 portions of fruit and veg per day, and eating regularly (every 3-4 hours). In the past I have had times when I've concentrated on each of those separately so felt happy doing all of those - otherwise I would have added just one new 'habit' each week.

Week 3&4 - concentrating on tasting my food and eating more slowly

Week 5&6 - concentrating on drinking a pint of water before supper - that's where I am at the moment.

Week 7&8 - starting some exercise (!) - I don't quite remember what that is...

I'm finding myself eating smaller portion sizes, more fruit and veg, fewer biscuits etc so my eating habits are getting healthier. I am not banning any foods but am reducing carbs - but I'm finding that since I'm drinking more water and lots of vegetables (cooked in tasty ways) I'm not wanting as much of them. I'm so impressed with all of you on the WLS threads - you're doing really well!

So good news this week: I lost two pounds despite not having the best diet for two of those days. I focused on the manageable changes this week: no white bread, no random snacking and more movement. All of this was really helped by working full-time during the day and studying every night so there was no way I could laze around my apartment eating food.

This week I aim not to get any take-away food, eat a bad lunch or eat unhealthy snacks. I have a meal-plan made up for the week that involves tasty and healthy food. Tonight I cooked duck risotto- perhaps not the healthiest of dinners but definitely much better than a kebab!

Ah, well, I guess you are taller than my mom (who is 152cm). She is also apple shaped, so much bigger on top than you. Either way, give the 32 a try. It sounds like a 34 is too big.

I was on sparkpeople.com for a long time but got tired of having to journal everything online.

Writing everything down, every time, all the time, is what works for me. If I don't count calories, I don't lose weight.

I used FitDay online for a long time, but have now switched to the PC version (online is free, PC version costs $25, I think). Years ago I used an app for Palm Pilot - that was really convenient. There must be tons of smartphone apps for this.

The trick is finding the app that has a database that matches what you eat.

When I first started losing, I spent two years under the care of a nutritionist. She originally allotted me 1800 calories per day. After the first 15 pounds came off, she reduced me to 1600. Now I need to stay between 1400-1200 to lose weight, about 1600 to maintain (sad, but true).

Magda, btw, I meant to say that you should try a 32. I don't know what size you wear but my mom is a size 12/14 and wears a 34, and you look smaller than her, so I can imagine you're a 32, especially with your small-looking ribcage.

About diet: I'm a vegetarian and I love veggies, so my "diet" was actually removing sweets, cakes, white bread - along with pizza, lasagne, spaghetti and all other Italian food that I love

Sarah- counting calories is what works for me, and spark people is what I use. Actually, at this point sometimes I log online and sometimes I don't. I know how to work out a 400 calorie meal and 250 calorie snacks, and so I just stick with those most of the time. I do find that it's necessary to change things up frequently- both with diet and exercise.

Not really.

Well, yes. I have a really ordinary black t-shirt, women's size medium, that commemorates the fall of the Berlin Wall (large graphic of the wall with a rent in it, with light coming through, and the words "Freiheit Berlin!"). It's 20 years old now, and is pretty significant to me (my family was reunited when Germany reunited). When I got too big for it, I couldn't bring myself to give it away. It fits again now :-).

It's so true Katja! Weight loss is as much (more) psychological as physical. Like I told Magda- you will often find that weight loss on the scale and changes in measurement do not come at exactly the same time. One takes time to catch up to the other. I often find that when I have lost weight on the scale, everything feels loose for a period of time until it tightens up. I am actually going through that phase right now. I call it the "Flabby Phase", but I know that it will pass. I don't know what they've done with sizing- you certainly can't equate sized from 40 years ago to now. I also have measurements that are way off from what size I normally wear. Do you have any old sentimental garments that you saved? I have a drill team uniform from Jr. High, and I almost fit in that now. That was a real eye opener.

Weight loss is bizarre.

My weight is dropping, per the scale.

My measurements are not.

But my clothes don't fit! (I'm past 14s, and even 12s are now loose.)

I was looking at ordering some clothes online, and if I were to order according to my waist and bust measurements, I'd be ordering size 16s.

I'm trying to get my mind around size 10, which is really hard - I was a size 12 as a teenager (which means there's been some wicked size inflation in the last 40 years). A friend pointed out that I'd better get my head around it, as the mind is very powerful, and I might find myself stuck at size 12 otherwise!

I am down 2 pounds this week, so I 'm happy.

Magda- don't get frustrated. I often find that weight loss and physical change do not go hand in hand like you would think they would. It takes a little time for one to catch up with the other, but it will come.

I use a scale that measure body fat, since muscle does weigh more than fat and sometimes that can throw off all the good progress you are making.

Hi Magda,

I just wanted to say that your weight loss is an inspiration to me. I have lost 90 pounds in 3 years and my weight loss has hit a plateau at around 155 pounds. I feel frustrated and ashamed that I can't lose more just yet. Posts like yours help me realize that it can be done and I should keep on trying. So thank you for being brave and honest about your weight loss.

Also keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat. In fact many diet experts recommend keeping track only of measurements and ignoring the scale altogether. I can't stop stepping on the scale but I do notice that when my measurements change, I fit my clothes much better than if I just lose weight alone.

Thanks again for posting and keep up the excellent work!

Bad News: my weight is still the same...

Good News: my measurements are changing. Maybe it's because of exercise, but I think I'm more proportionate. Right now it's 103-72-105 in centimetres (about 40.5-28.5-41.5 in inches). Yay!

Both Good And Bad: my 34FF bra band is getting loose (it's already hooked on the tighest hook, the band is riding up and the straps are falling off my shoulders). Grrr. I guess I need to buy something like 32G now.

Well, I think I'm getting used to my body. There are many things I still don't like, but my body image is certainly better.

How are you doing?
